There are two threads going on this subject.

The owner of ducatiwiki.net, Aldon Caron, is open to letting the Monster fanatics add to his existing wiki, which is currently aimed at the ST family, but has been set up to include 851 and 888 information (if I can get around to adding some stuff in that category).

He also mentioned that he was looking at letting the Multistrada guys add their stuff as well.

This is a great opportunity to create one unified Ducati wiki that would be truly useful to all Ducati riders, rather than having a bunch of separate ones for each model.

We need to seriously consider joining forces here.

Nothing wrong with the idea of going with something that already works well.

I like Scott's idea too.

I have some concerns about just adding content to someone elses wiki.

Would we as a community have the ability to make changes that we deem necessary? It's Aldon's site so I understandably assume he's not willing to give in to some ideas we might have.

This wouldn't be our community's combined knowledge but just an external site to find information.  Which is fine, but depending on how it's managed it's not going to be seen as ours.  And therefore not a substitute for the FAQ's/How-tos.

Then, how are we going to maintain the wiki?  We as a community may have different views than Aldon regarding this.  Which is totally legitimate and understandable considering it's his site.

All I'm looking for is a smooth build up and adaptation of a knowledge base for this site, and I just have a few concerns about using Aldon's site.   One issue could render this option not possible for us as a solution.

He lets people that he trusts update the wiki.  I have that privilege.

I'm pretty sure that he would let our group do whatever we want in the Monster section.  However, the people allowed to modify it would be limited.  But anyone with a good argument for why they should have change privilege would most likely get it.  At least until they screw something up or something.

I really don't want this to come across the wrong way.  All I'm trying to do is make sure that we have something set up for this community that will be lasting, and in control of those with a vested interest in this board as well.

It's in his interest for us to put all of our knowledge on his wiki, and you being a contributer there also have an interest in it.  Which is completely fine and understandable.

But is it in the best interest for this community?  I think that if the branding is similar to here, the moderation is under the same group of folks and there is a feeling of connection between this board and the wiki that it will be used by the people here new and old.

I will agree that using a site that is already populated with information is a great place to start.  But will it accomplish the goal of being a data repository for the DMF.  Not only does it have to work but we would need to have the buy in from the some of the moderators and experienced people here for it to not only take off but to flourish.

I don't think that it will be able to evolve as we may need it to as it grows.   And IMHO I don't think that there is THAT much information that pertains to monsters at all.  I gave it a look and it's not exactly what I had in mind for a monsterwiki.

Can we get an idea of how the founding members of this board feel about this?
After all we ARE talking about the structure and layout of this community.

ducatiwiki.net is still in its infancy.  A small group of people pulled good information from the Yahoo ST2 group for most of the entries.  I was planning to do the same for the Yahoo 851-888 group.

I don't have anything against a separate MonsterWiki, I was just offering a suggestion to get things started a bit faster, especially if the goal is to be DucatiWiki rather than only MonsterWiki.

I'll leave the decision at this point to someone else, but I hope to do more work helping fill out ducatiwiki.net.  Even if there is a separate MonsterWiki, it would still be good for a few people here to get update privileges on ducatiwiki.net and put in some Monster information.

TCK!

Well adding the Wiki to this site wouldn't be too difficult but it would require more bandwidth and more storage space as well as more time for working on bugs. I was never thinking of trying to add this to their plate on this website unless they wanted that.

We don't necessarily need to add it to the same host.  But a connection in theme and management style would be nice.  I just worry about us trying to put our knowledge somewhere and not everyone really recognizing it as part of the boards effort.

Otherwise it's really just the effort of us as individuals to decide to populate somone else's wiki.  And this site can also do it's own FAQ/How-to's.  Buy in from Duc-Stew and Co as support would also be helpful.

Monsterwiki I like.

Once people have time to implement the Ti memberships I am sure many here would buy them to support the site and add more space.
