Coul be loose from dirt, water, oils, the grip stretched, worn ineer contact surface after getting a little loose...a whole assortment of things.

My take on grips is that once they get loose they get thrown away.

is $20 worth the loss of control? or even the chance?

i'll put my $20 of new grips for feel, and knowledge that they are in good working order against anybody's take-offs.

So IMHO replace them.  and yes I use the hair spray method too if I don't have grip glue handy but I usually do seeeing as they sell it right there next to the grips.  Also I always safety wire.

+1 on the hairspray. You can also safety wire it.

This is exactly what I do.  Hairspray and safety wire, that shit ain't going nowhere.
