Yea, similar to an airplane with skis.

Just so y'all know how totally nuts this stunt was, this is the spot where he dropped into the second wave in the video.
The most ridonkulous wave on earth, IMO.

I believe that wave is Teahupoo (pronouced cho-poo, IRRC).  What's crazy is that, not only is it a very fast, very steep wave, but that the reef is very shallow---reaching only 20 inches below the surface at its highest point!  A wipeout get-off is a serious danger.

Also: Why did he wear so much motogear?  For effect I assume.  The helmet seems a major impediment to breathing, which is kinda important in that scenario.

What are you talking about?  I breathe with my helmet on every time I wear it ;D

With that reef nearby, a Kayak helmet would probably be the best thing to wear, and a nice surf suit that offered some buoyancy and some abrasion protection.

The point was to do it in his normal riding gear that he uses on all of his big stunts.

Yeah, I was kinda guessing that.  Wouldn't have looked as cool if he was in board shorts and kayak helmet.

I wonder what the plan is for wiping out and the bike sinking to the bottom?

Not his style, if you've followed his career.

I noticed that right away. I guess if you're going to ride a wave on a moto, might as well ride the baddest one!!  [bow_down]

For those interested, watch Riding Giants with Laird Hamilton. Cool movie, and he rides this wave at the end as well. Balls is an understatement.
