The custom paint job looks great, but considering it's a Jan 1994 model and the original shape and style, I felt it was owed a restoration to original colours. The frame was recently repainted in the Ducati bronze of 93 & 94 and the wheels are correctly black, so red body work it is.

I know what you mean about red, when I got the scrambler FT the first thing that I had done was to get rid of the yellow/mat black and have it painted a proper Ducati red.

The streetfighter remains black as I think it suits the image best and my vito is an almost perfect shade of Ducati red so I'm with you Tony on the repaint.

My 96 was black tank, bronze frame, and silver wheels.

Interesting. I take it that the black colour was the oem metallic charcoal?
My first 95 (late 95 Aussie delivery) was black (metallic charcoal) tank, gold frame (916 gold iirc) and bronze wheels while my second 95 (early 95 Japanese delivery) with red tank, had a bronze frame and bronze wheels.
I always liked the black wheels on this 94 model and the cobby style of the rear hugger. The tank being 18 Litres is a bit more bulbous and brutish in style.

Proves that there are always exceptions to model specific paint schemes no matter what the factory manuals and brochures say.

No. It was a true black metallic.I wouldn't describe it as charcoal. It was slightly different from the similar vintage SS bikes in that the metallic seemed finer, but that's pretty typical of Ducati colors. It always depended on which shop, using whatever brand of paint, actually painted the part.

True. An example is when the red changed to a slightly lighter shade in '93 even though it had the same paint code. I guess a different supplier or they went to a lighter coloured primer?

Ducati didn't manufacture their tanks, or plastics. They were done in job shops in Italy. Different shops used different paint manufacturers, and different processes. This resulted in different appearance of the color.

Ducati's 'official' word was that PPG was the paint supplier, but even if that was the case, the color was shop mixed, and applied over different color primers. It isn't like a huge auto manufacturing plant where the color is mixed by the paint supplier and delivered in huge quantities so the variance is minimal.

For the record, this motor has JE pistons, ported heads, ported inlet manifolds wrapped in exhaust heat insulation, nice multi angle valve job, dialed cams on Vee Two alloy cam pulleys, Staintune pipes, Exactfit coils, tuned Ignitech ignition, EVR alloy basket, OEM alloy plates with Barnett driven plates, Vee Two clutch drum, Corse Dynamics clutch springs, heavy duty engine studs, open airbox (very quiet) with relocated K&N filter and short, ported V stacks, machined flywheel (-1kg) and Oberon breather valve.

I'm now running oem BDST38 carbs with a quick turn Mikuni throttle. There is an oil cooler cover in Winter. It's a strong motor for what it is.

Bike has re-valved forks and Ohlins shock, Rizoma mirrors, OEM bikini fairing and Oberon fuel cap . There is a spare Sargent seat customised to take the GLW.
