2005 S2R800 No start - best way to check fuel delivery?

Long time no post. Long time no ride Monster either. Strap broke while loading onto a hitch mount carrier about three years ago catapulting the bike onto me and then onto the pavement. So pissed at minor damage, I hide it in the barn and forgot about it. Switched to riding dirt because people suck.

I've got pods, boomtubes and a ducati performance computer tuned for pods and open pipes. Shouldn't matter. Ran great before parking.

Three years later, I fixed the minor scratches, replace bar end mirrors, flushed fuel tank and replaced gas, flushed and bled all hydraulics and replaced belts and battery. Cranks but won't fire. Cranks strong. Strong spark. I can hear the fuel pump run when the key is on. Haven't checked fuel delivery to injectors. If I pour 1/2 oz of gas down intakes, it starts and runs briefly. Pulled and inspected all fuses; they are fine.

What is the best way to check for fuel delivery? Pull an injector? I've opened the filler and listened for splashing/spraying indicating a busted or disconnected hose in the tank and everything sounds fine. No spray either.

If I had a bad relay, the fuel pump wouldn't hum, right?

Pull airbox lid, with tank up and connected, crank the motor with the throttle full open, visually check for fuel spraying from injectors.

Best to use a helper.

Also best to use a mirror and a flashlight lest it backfire.

I've seen injectors get physically stuck and won't open.

There's other possible reasons for the injectors not working, but best to see if there's any fuel spraying first.

Tits!

I've got pods so it is super easy test to run.

Pulled the intake horns all the way off and you have a really good view.

Unfortunately, no squirt. At all. Dry as a bone.

What next? All I had time for today was this little test. I can hear the pump spool up when the key is turned on. I haven't checked the relays, but if the pump fires, isn't the relay working?

Yes, if the pump is spooling up, the relay is working.
That same relay provides power to the injectors and the ignition coils.

Crude fuel pressure test:
Grab the fuel line with your hand and give it the hardest pinch you can, and hold it, then key on.
Do you feel it inflate the hose, pushing back?

Pumps up tight! Can't squeeze against it.

Sorry for the pauses, on baby duty today.

Tomorrow I'll pull the injectors and see if they are stuck shut and clean them.

IIRC, the injectors are held in with a small Torx screw, and they're quite tight.
Make sure the bit is fully engaged and straight.
Some penetrating oil/PB Blaster a bit ahead of time would be good.

Good tip! I saw an allen head screw but also read about how tight they are.

Headed out there now.

It was a torx head and they were not real tight! I mean tight enough....

They were both stuck shut. Pulled them out, cleaned the outside off and tapped them with a 2 pound hammer until the opened. Now they open and close just fine (made a dongle and using a 9v battery). I'm going to go get some carb cleaner so I can flush them real good and will put them back in.

Thanks man. I'll update when she is running.

Be careful of the o-rings with the carb cleaner. You don't want them swelling up, or disintegrating.

Thanks. Pulled them already.

Might be too late, but I've had good luck cleaning/flushing injectors with Seafoam.  Never had a problem with the O-rings from that, and it dissolves the crud super fast.  Not as harsh as carb cleaner or the like.

Oh nice!

I didn't get a chance to get back out in the shop yesterday. I now have an 8 month old daughter and it was my day to watch her and make food.

I plan to get out there today to flush the injectors. If I can't get a good spray pattern, I'll order some more.

Blew the injectors out with carb cleaner and reinstalled. It runs like a scalded dog!

Thanks everybody.

Now, how much should I ask for it?
