Rings have evaporated with metal through the oil. It can happen.

The worst carbon build up around valves and seats I've seen since old oily Triumphs. (The irony is that it's a modern Triumph and the owner will part it out rather than rebuild). I've seen these new Triumphs with disintegrated sprague bearings in the starter gear when the bearings were sourced from Thailand. Metal goes through the motor if it's not caught in time. I've only seen Ducati sprague bearings spin when they fail, but not collapse like these can.

Down here a Ducati would be worth a motor replacement or rebuild, but it will be more cost effective parting out this bike than rebuilding. Pity as the bike ran well before the engine failure.
Silver lining is the customer is now looking for an M1100.
