RPM Ranges

So I was getting on the highway today and hit what I think is called a false neutral going from 3rd to 4th.  It seemed to hit pretty hard when I upshifted again to 4th.  Didn't seem like a big deal as this has happened a couple of other times.  I then noticed that once I got up to 5th and was cruising at about 80 my RPMs were right at 5k.  This is weird to me because my RPMs are typically at 5.5 to 6k at this speed.  I got off the highway and took some backroads and realized that instead of wanting to ride in the 5k area (where it normally wants to be )my bike wanted to be in the 4k range.  The engine and power felt normal and there was no abnormal noises so what the hell happened?  What RPM range should I be in?  Have I been riding at a higher than normal RPM?

Any help would be appreciated because I sure don't want to keep riding if something is wrong.

Bike is 02 620 Dark.

is this the first time you've noticed the change since installing your 14t?

it'll give you more power low, and run higher RPM at high speed...

ya but thats the opposite of what a smaller sprocket will do

I've had the sprocket on since april.  This just started right after the hard shift into 4th after the false neutral.

Ive hit a couple of falsies as well. I started wearing riding boots and the shifter needed to be adjusted. I run a 08' S2R 1K and at 80mph my rpms are around 5,500. maybe a little less. I would guess that you have done no damage. Is it possible that you may be paying more attention now that you've had a false. I know that when I miss, I spend too much time thinking about what happened and if I screwed something up.
08' S2R 1K   That was close  damn near lost a $400 hand cart.

I know what you mean man, it is easier to be more anxious when something like that happens  but I am for SURE that the RPMs have dropped for the same amount of power per gear.  I'm really concerned about this so hopefully someone can let me know if I am freaking out about nothing.

With the motor off: does the tach needle sit at it's normal position, or does it look be be father passed 0 than normal?

metallimonster

The tach needle is right at zero when off and sweeps fine when turned on.  I'm going to ride it to work tomorrow and watch the rpms carefully and see what is up.  The weirdest thing about all this is that it runs fine and pulls great at 4.5k compared to 5.5 where is used to.
