S4R - S4Rs Engine Temps

Where I live (Honolulu) we average an ambient daytime temperature range of 80 to 90 degrees year round. If I've got my 999 running at highway speeds the coolant temperature runs 175* to 185*. I like it like that. The problem is when I have to stop in traffic the temp can run 225-227* before the fans come on. Regardless of what the engineer types say I don't like that and have made a modification to deal with that.

I may be selling the 999 and have to consider an alternate bike.  The watercooled 4 valve Monster could be the perfect compromise between my 999 and my 900 Monster. For those of you who ride a S4R/s in hot weather and traffic what temperatures are you getting? Any cooler than the 999?

I ride in the Central Valley of California where temps are sometimes 100+ in the summer. Most I've seen sitting still was something like 215. But usually stays around 207 and lower while at the lights. Oh, and I'm on an '07 S4R.

nope...thermostat is set so the fan kicks on and holds it at that same temp.   220 before anything and then nothing above 225ish once fan runs....give or take

I don't think I have ever had my Rs over 225 in hot and humid jersey summers?

Before you get rid of the bike if you really love it, why not try to drain your coolant and use a synthetic coolant like engine ice? I used that straight in my 60 HP race quad and it made a big difference in temperature.

here in socal my bike runs between 160-190 in stop-and-go traffic on 80-90 degree days.  the hottest i've ever gotten it was about 230 on the ride back from the dealership.

I'm not selling the bike because of the engine temperatures. I've got that characteristic covered. The 999 is the finest motorcycle I've ever ridden and I love it, most of the time. I'm selling it due to a combination of other reasons. Plus, if I don't get my asking price I'm not selling it either

That's a possibility but it's not at the top of the list right now.

My bike runs 160 to 180 F in mild, up to 90 degree weather and fans come on at 220.

If you get the RS get the Termi kit at the time of purchase. Mine was only $2150 and one hour shop time. Makes one hell of a difference. I'm somewhat of a nut about this.

Chris and others will back me up on this. (not about the being a nut ......well that too probably)

Yeah, the Rs with termi's is a absolute riot. I've had the bike power wheelie coming out of a corner in 4th gear......

There are 2 fans on the RS and it comes on at slightly different temperature.  I don't remember off hand.  If I fint it I will post up. 

On operating temperature:
In NYC with stop and go traffice in dead of summer my RS runs between 220'~235' 
On freeway and back roads, it runs around 200'~215'

It's good to know these temps. Mine was up to 205 the other day in heavy traffic and I was a little worried at the lack of fan action. Guess it was waiting for another 15 degrees or so to kick them on.

225 my fan kicks on for my 06 S4R.   It did that hot a few times in heavy Atlanta traffic.  I noticed when I did the exhaust and power commander it helped quite a bit and ran cooler overall.

Even with 100 degree heat here in the summer I'm only seeing 205-215.  This is great compared to the other bike.
