Will,

Maybe I missed the post, but how did the Mt. Washington hill climb/time trial go??

Hey Brian,

No you hadn't missed anything. This week has been muy hectic and I haven't had a chance to post up yet.

The race was an awesome experience despite an absentminded snafu that nearly kept me from riding. The race is held on the one and only road that climbs to the summit. It's too steep to ride down after going up, so you have to arrange for a support vehicle to take you down. They only let the vehicles go up until 8:00am at which point they close the road to all traffic. My teammates' girlfriend provided support so I gave her my bag to take up with a change of clothes. After she went up and they closed the road, I started getting ready for my 8:45 start time. First order of business... put my cycling shoes on. The shoes that are... in... my... bag...   AGGGHHHHH  [bang]  Here I am, having paid registration fees, airfare, hotel, cycle shipping, rental car, etc., and I can't ride because I forget my shoes!?!? HELL NO.

After telling my sad story to unsympathetic officials, I hauled ass to the closest town with a bike shop (20 miles away) to buy a pair of shoes. Actually I didn't buy it just then. My wallet was in the same bag that went up the mountain. After I told the guy my story I said to him "oh and by the way, I have no way to pay you right now.". He looked me straight in the eye and said "well, I guess we'll just have to do this on the 'honor system'.". Thank god for small town generosity! I totally need to send that guy something. Oh, BTW the only shoes they had were a size too big so if you know anyone that needs a pair of size 12 SIDI's, let me know.

By the time I made it back everyone had already started so I wasn't able to get timed, but at least I was still able to do the ride, WHICH WAS BEAUTIFUL!! The weather was perfect (at least until 10 minutes after I finished when it started hailing like a MOFO). It was super steep but I was geared well so it wasn't a big deal as long as I kept my heart rate in check. The last 50 yards was intense!! At 22% I'd never seen anything like that before, let alone ridden it. People were falling down from either cramps or poor gearing. The link to the picture below shows the guy behind me being helped up after he fell.

I'm going back in two years if anyone wants to join me.  [thumbsup]

Someone please put a caption on that picture. Or turn it into one of those motivational photos. I am referring to the guy behind Will who seems to be being pushed up the hill.

Very cool Will! Way to adapt and overcome. How did you ship your bike?

Very nice Will!! Glad it sort of worked out for you. [thumbsup] Bet you twenty bucks you won't let that happen to you again. Size 12s are too big for me. Maybe someone in your club can use them. Makes my knees and back hurt just thinking about a climb like that. Austin/hill country climbs were one thing once upon a time but nothing like that. Never been there but I know that climb and people who have done it before... it's a mother! Not surprised at the hail at the end either... only thing missing was 50-100mph wind gusts! Glad you survived, hope you had some fun in there somewhere. [clap]

Oh, and for those that are interested, I'll be spending the next 14-16 hours in bed laying on a heating pad with an ice pack on my knee eating Advil. Nice job on the move guys! [thumbsup] Wasn't record time but we made up for it by having only one injured piece of furniture! Thanks for the drinks at Chuy's Rich. I owe you next time for my second they convienently put on your tab by mistake. How come that never happens enough?? [beer] Ya'll have fun at ***'s birthday party/wrenchfest tomorrow!! ;D

Vomit? My idea is vomit? I'm shocked and disheartened! Stupid or bullshit, yes. But vomit? Yet another new low point for me. [laugh]

♣ McKraut ♣

hey, a huge thanks to all those people that came out and helped with the move.  scott, bryant, brian, george, and charles, i owe you guys big for all the help.  i'm still working on getting internet setup at my place...but just wanted to take a minute and say thanks alot to all of you; i really appreciate it   [thumbsup]  i've been working on the unpacking and all the minor stuff here and there...sure is a lot more stuff to fit in closets and cabinets than i had counted on.  and i think i'm just writing the living room off as a total loss...i'm not sure what's happening there.

anyway, thanks again to all of you guys, i can't tell you how much i appreciate it.  i don't hope any of you are moving any time soon at all...but just let me know any time you need a hand toting around crap, and i'm there.   [thumbsup]
