Buying 900ie tomorrow, anything to look for?

I've been lurking here for several weeks, just trying to soak up as much knowledge as I can.  Hopefully it has done me good, as I am driving 7 hours tomorrow to purchase a 900ie!  I'm probably too excited, so I'm afraid I'll overlook something when doing the pre-purchase inspection.  I'm hoping that the DMW gurus can give me some items that I should definitely look for before purchase.

The bike is an '02, has <2k miles, and has not been dropped.  600 mile service was performed by dealer, owner changed oil every year himself.

Any common issues that I should be aware of and look for?

Any help is appreciated!  Thanks!!!

My first bike was an 01 M900I.E. GREAT bike! One thing I learned after buying mine was that they recommend the cam belts get changed every 2yrs or 12k miles whichever comes first. So just check to see if the owner has had this done. If they haven't been changed it's not a big deal but I would take the bike to a dealer, and have them look at the belts. The main reason they say to change them often is because they can get dried out, and snap. If I remember from the old board this is especially true with bikes that haven't been ridden alot over the years. If you break a cam belt the motor is gonna be toast.

Also take a look inside the fuel tank, mine had a bunch of water, and so of course rust in the bottom left side of the tank it clogged the filter, and made it run pretty crappy till I cleaned the tank out really good, and changed the filter.

Other than that just check anything rubber to make sure it's not dry rotted or cracked which for an 02 it should be fine but you never know.

This is just stuff from my experience I am by no means an expert or anything.

Hope this helps

Make sure you get the RED KEY!!!!
The bike has an immobilizer as part of the (very expensive) ECU. The red key allows you to make extra keys, and reset the ECU in case of electronic malfunction etc.
Other than that, see above.

Well, I  bought the bike, and I don't think it could be any closer to new... 1246 miles.  Even the nubbies are still on the tires.  Can't wait to take it up into the mountains!

LOL!  Yeah, first mods are "normal" handlebars or clip-ons (currently are City bars), and lose the mickey mouse ear mirrors. After that, who knows?   ;)

Thanks for the warm welcome and great advice!

My alarm is going of. dont take her out just yet.

1. Rubber dries and rots.
If you ahvent already done so, change tires and belts.

2. Oil change, becasue you dont know when the last time the oil was changed and it could of collected a bunch of bull shit.

3. take of those saddles!!!!!!!

Looks great.  The only problem is that an '02 should not have only 1246 miles.  Now get out there and take care of that.

CONGRATS!

If the timing belts haven't been changed in the last 2 years or the brake fluid in the last year add these items to your "todo" list.
