I got out of the Navy in Nov of 2005 to get a job at customs on the Aircraft maint. side of the house.
Shortly after applying I find out a contractor for the Navy is letting a buncha people go and they all use the buddy system to get jobs where I wanted to be ( i didnt have any buddys)
Long story short its late 2008 and I finally got my "in" at customs who got me a job.
Its actually L-3 Communications who is the employer that is contracted to do the aircraft maint. for Customs but who cares... im finally in.
In the last 3 years Ive worked at
N. Grumman
Q1 Aircraft services
First coast aerospace
Gulfstream
Sk jets
needless to say the airplane biz. is tough stuff.
Its all good. I got bennies, good pay, job security, time off, day shift and best of all its for the Gov.

Mind if I ask what your rate was?
I'm an ATI who works on IFF. I've got a couple more years on my current contract, but who knows what could happen down the line, right? ;)
I joined as an AD.
For those who dont know... That is Aviation machinist mate AKA aircraft engine mechanic/fuel systems mechanic. I worked on the S-3 Viking.
Jacksonville FL is not the best place to leave the navy looking for a job in aviation but I gave it a shot anyway.
I got My A&P license while I was still in so that the navy would pay the bill.

Congrats on becoming a government drone! I've got a couple friends also working for Uncle Sam... besides the occasional office politics, they all like working for the fed. gov. Whats the starting GS level for A&Ps?

nope...
you cant earn time toward career status, but thats not necessarily a bad thing.
however, if hard economics times are ahead, the govt. is going to cancel contracts before it lets career employees go.
