The trick coming back down is to land on the downslope. He almost went too far and just about landed on the flat. That's probably where he messed his thumb up. [thumbsup] [clap] That's alright. I've been banned from Vegas. Maybe I'll work on the the Rio Grand Gorge outside of Taos. [evil]

Great observation....that's the first thing that came to mind when I watched his path..all he had to do is stay in his lane. Luckily he survived with serious injuries...safety gear is required by law.

Ouch! Yeah, I'd definitely agree he had an oh, shit moment and it paralyzed him right into the car. Kowboy.... exactly my thoughts about the landing as well. In the slow-mo replay you can see him almost get thrown over the bars when the front-end slams down.

Damn. I had to respond to a bike vs car accident when I was in England, right off base. Spanish national t-boned a little brit car at speed. Went through the car and took off the driver's noggin on his way out. Not a good day.

I was fascinated by that video. I watched it several times as it is very similar to my November 2007 accident. I had a median on my left as the option. I always wondered what my bike did after the impact and this is as close as I can imagine. Also, his flight over the car was exactly what I did, with the exception of the landing. I landed flat on my back. Ouch!!! Glad he survived.

Yeah, that guy added much more technical difficulty to his trick. He seemed to have squeezed in a 3/4 layout WITH a 1 1/2 twist. He stuck the landing. Whereas I did the much less technical 3/4 layout and bobbled the landing apparently still in a pike position from the topography of the hematoma on my right cheek.
Scottish, you said my bike appeared to have 360'ed from the marks on the tankand frame. That guys just hit the car and bounced off to the side. That did not compute.

Anytime I see anyone in human-cannonball mode, I think of myself. Rocket man!!!!!!!! Glad that one is behind me. Older and wiser.

[laugh] [laugh] [laugh] You sent me on a coughing jag I got to laughing so hard. I have to wonder if Patrana's hasn't been ruggedized! I'M JUST SAYING!!! He is doing 30 ft jumps there. I'd thnk the plastic would crack in half under his weight. My brother's had a little tag on it that said max weight limit was 45 or 50 lbs. and I was in 5th grade at the time. I am sure I weighed more that 50 lbs. so I was banned from the big wheel. >:(

Guilty much? No actually I was thinking about the time I was drunk doing a mad smokin' burn out on my 1100 when the rear hooked up and the bike shot off across the parking lot and me looking like a fool standing there looking after it. Or the time I was showing off (drunk again) cornering hard and hitting the gravel. It was at sunset and man the exhaust made the prettiest shower of sparks in the gloaming as bike slid along on it's side... boy I'm glad I quit drinking. What concerns me most is this "corning hard". Is it something you're eating or did you also spend some time in the pokey that you haven't told me about. All the rest I already suspected since mysterious abrasions and dents would appear on your bike now and again.

Yeah, that's either a 99 or a 2000 Honda Blackbird. I've had my 99 up to 182 on the speedo coming back from the crest... for just a few seconds. Things happen at an alarming rate at that pace and I have rarely taken it over 160 since. I've heard of others in the Blackbird family that have taken a stock up to 190+, and nobody will admit to over 200 on the board since it just doesn't make the power necessary to push air at that speed without at least a built engine. That being said, they might have changed a sprocket for better low end acceleration and that would show 200 on the speedo without too much effort. Most of the guys are starting to turbo them now, putting the air intake in place of the headlight and doing some crazy plumbing jobs. I like mine just the way it is, plenty of power to get me in some serious trouble.

I would be surprised if honda was still running a mechanical speed sensor on those. Hondas has always been an innovator, I'd expect them to run a mag sensor they same as newer Monsters, if so the sprocket combo wouldn't make a wit of difference. I am surprised to hear that your Blackbird will do 200mph, the zx-14 and Busa(fastest production bikes) are governed at 187mph and won't go faster without an aftermarket chip. You saw that that Blackbird went up to 300kph? That is the fabled 187mph, The big four out of Japan have agreed on a gentlmens arrangement not to excede that in an effort to self police so the countries they sell bikes in don't pass legislation to curtail their hp numbers.

Oh, I couldn't do that. It was the above mentioned bicycle and foot traffic that put it over the edge for me. To easy to come around a corner on a couple cyclist riding side by side maybe topping 20mph. No way you could react in time imo.

That right there is why you don't see me pulling wheelies. That and the memory of me accidentally cracking the throttle of my older brother's minibike and going right up the front steps and nearly through the door. I couldn't back it off due to inexperience and the g-forces of being thrown backward. [laugh] I was in 5th grade at the time. Did it later on my little YZ80 when I was 17 when I was roll-starting it. I have also had a couple of harrowing experiences involving wide open throttles on snowmobiles that are noteworthy. So I can relate to what was going on with that chap. I never have learned to get the front end up, but I have practiced full gainers off the diving board to prep myself mentally.

On a side-note, my ex-husband, who taught me how to ride, had a shelf of trophies testifying to his wheelie prowess. Scottish picked up his talent, but I never did.

The old guy is wily and he has done this before. But, wow that's an ugly Harley....

There are at least two reasons why the fellow with CBR1000RR gets beat. The first is that he should launch differently. He needs to see about 9 grand on the tach, then quickly and smoothly slip the clutch out at the edge of tire traction while pegging the throttle. It's fairly easy to say, but it requires practice. [Dolph]

The second reason the Honda gets beat is that it is a short race. The old, crappy Harley beats him off the line because it has bags-O-torque off the bottom. That makes it easy to just ride off the line for a good start and in a short race like this one, it's all about the start.

....But it is a very funny video and the bearded, old fart has an unusually, twisted sense of German humor. ... Maybe all Germans have a strange sense of humor....? [laugh]

Yes, there is a skid mark that briefly shows up behind the bike in the slow speed video section between 32-33 seconds.

The black bike rider in front is going quite a bit slower and the curve tightens there so the red bike rider may have tried to slow down.

It doesn't take much front brake, or rear, while heeled over hard to drop the bike. As Don Juan has said, it's likely he used too much front brake. I have seen this happen at the track a few times.

The red bike rider is pretty lucky that he went under the guard rail and also missed the thick wood support post. .... scary stuff... :o

Looks like the rider wasn't well committed to turning, either. His hips are slightly off to the left, but the bulk of his body is on top of the bike. Poor body position. I think he target fixated, as the front wheel is headed toward the guard rail when he tucks it in.

I "accidentally" found the source for the crash video in Karl's previous note. Apparently the videos are taken on Mulholland Drive in LA. Weekend camera companies and amateurs set up on some tricky curves. So do the cops. Below are some of the many videos from that spot.

This video is like Karl's, but it is an 848 crashing just a little further up the road. He probably used too much throttle and the rear end lets loose.

Seen that vid a few times.. the part where he's going against traffic at speed is intense. Skilled yes.. smart, no... I've done similar in the car when late, that was over 4 yrs ago. Stupid on my part.. made it from Williamsburg to 219st in the city (fdr) in less then 10 min...

Had to be at work by 1030.. if I didn't catch the lights on time thigh it wouldn't have happened as fast.. 120 mph in the fdr is sketchy of course. I drove it everyday so knew where each bad pothole was..

Edit: Oh, and on the subject of jerks, some a-hole is driving around Pensacola at night on the freeways in a big black SUV. He runs up on bikers and then sprays paint thinner all over them. There's been four incidents I think and one fatality so far, along with two acquaintance who have wound up in the hospital. Cops of course are doing nothing and the news refuses to run the story.
