Title: AMS private trackdays posted
Post by: bryant8 on February 18, 2009, 06:10:12 PM
I dropped by AMS Dallas this afternoon and was told that there are 4 private trackdays posted on the AMS site.  I'm going to plan for the April dates.  Anybody else interested?

BTW the Bayliss 1098R is beautiful

Did I miss where it says which track?  I'm going to see if I can make 3/26 and 4/23. I'm more certain about 4/23 than 3/26

Can't make the 12th, but the other days are a possibility. More likely in April though.

So everyone knows which track this is or are we all just going to assume MSR-Cresson?

Yep, it's MSR Cresson.  I can't make any of the March dates due to work schedules, but April I hope to make at least 1 of them

I'm going to try 1 just to see whether it's really all that much better.  $250 for a track day is almost double the cost.  If it comes with solid instruction (including video, etc.) then this may be worth it.  Otherwise, I'll just spend a little bit more and get Ty for a private instruction day split with 3-4 people and cost will be pretty close.  I believe AMS is doing this on an MSRC member day.  Anyone familiar with the format and how it differs from a regular track day?

From the one I did last year, it's a member day and it's pretty much just the group that goes out with Jeff.  We had 12 bikes out there including Jeff and Derrick.  We were splitting track time with the Mazdas (cup cars?) and then later the open-wheel cars.  We got in 6 solid sessions in at about 30 mins apiece.  It wasn't busy as the normal AMS trackday, but pretty similar.  I think they do video you on the track now, I saw Jester watching his at AMSD one day.  There's enough time between sessions to pull on Jeff's ear with questions and ask for a follow/lead.

Carlo, I think since you're a member at ECR and can get private instruction from Ty at a price w/ a few others, the AMS day may not be worth it to you price wise.  I hope my quick recap of helps
Title: Re: AMS private trackdays posted
Post by: cm on February 20, 2009, 06:41:28 PM
Thanks for the recap.  I might try one to see what it's all about and then figure it out from there.  From a value standpoint, it's probably not, especially if you can get a Ty Howard lesson for close to the same price and only 4 students. By the way, you don't have to be a member to get lessons from Ty - though you do have to pay for track fees also. As AMS fees include the track fees, Ty's still a bit more expensive, but you get more.

If you are talking about a normal track day with just getting the opportunity to ride around, then it's not a good deal for me, especially with my ECR membership.  I can also get on the MSRC guest list pretty easily since most of my friends are members there...BUT sometimes, it's just fun to go out with a different group.

By the way, since this is done in conjunction with a member day, do members get to run the track with the AMS people?  Just curious if the Euro-only bike rule can be enforced (they can do this if they have exclusive rights to the track sessions, but if not, then there will be non Euro bikes running...). For a full day event, I'd like to bring both my bikes and I do try to do more learning on the SV (that's what I bought it for!).

Later!

Carlo

So, Carlo, How much is it for the TY lesson with 4 people? 3 people? I would assume that includes you since you are the member. Does it include video as well?
Thanks,
Steve

Ty's lessons have nothing to do with membership with any of the racetracks.  Anyone can contact him and set up something. I just end up doing it since I think that have 3-4 people is the best value, especially since I don't really tihnk I need someone for the whole day exclusively working with me.

DETAILS -

Benefits:

1. 5-7 30 minute on track sessions with Ty.

2. 3 hours of classroom instruction with Ty.

3. 3 to 4 sessions of on track video for review.

4. Each session is individually tailored for the riders skill level and needs.

Cost:

1 rider ECR $500

1 rider MSR $575

2 rider ECR $325

2 rider MSR $375

3 rider ECR $295

3 rider MSR $335

4 rider ECR $280 (Maximum riders 4)

4 rider MSR $320 (Maximum riders 4)

========
He charges more for MSR since his cost at MSR is higher.

By the way, I called AMS.  Since it's an MSR member day, there will be cars/other bikes. I asked if I can bring my SV and they said yes...

I'm going to sign up closer to when I have a bit of confidence in the weather forecast...

Carlo, I'd be interested in getting a day lesson one day with Ty as well.  But I'd need my schedule to calm down a bit before I committ to a date.

I'm planning on attending the 2nd April date

Great!  So they have different groups? I thought this was going to be just a dozen bikes or less and all on track at the same time? Also, it is on a member day so it means that the cars will get their session (if there are any). They'll get at least 1 group, another one if open-wheelers show up.

I guess I'll find out tomorrow if #1, there are still openings,#2 whether I have to be in a particular group.

Look for me. You are more than welcome to use (or help yourselves) to the contents of my cooler.  I will likely bring 2 bikes.  A 748 and an SV.  Black Dainese leathers, silver Arai helmet with a Bridgestone logo.

Later!

On track I don't know if they break the groups up since there are so few of us.  But first thing in the morning they have some classroom time for the beginners.

I forgot to ask when we signed up if anyone else was going to be using the track that day.

Hope to see you there.

We are hoping that the rain and wind spare us one day on Thursday.  But it is spring in Texas.

So far the forecast is looking good, but then what do they know... :-\

Forecast looks good.  I will call in this afternoon and get a spot if one is still available.  I think I should have my Duc back tomorrow, but we'll see.
Title: Re: AMS private trackdays posted
Post by: cm on March 24, 2009, 12:06:59 PM
Unfortunately, I just heard from the shop and my Duc is out.  I suspected something was going on with the clutch...and I was right.  Not terribly expensive, but will have to wait a week for parts to arrive.  Waiting to hear back on whether I can bring a non-Euro bike, otherwise, I'm out for 3/26.
Title: Re: AMS private trackdays posted
Post by: cm on March 25, 2009, 12:51:35 PM
Looks like I am out.  Apparently, if my Duc isn't available (it's still waiting for parts ), then I'm not welcome to this even if it's not an exclusive AMS day (there will be other bikes on the track if MSR members show up, as well as car sessions).

There's a chance I might still be there...but not with any sort of affiliation with AMS (if I can find a member to host me for the day...if there are members on this list who is going and would allow me to be their guest, I can return the favor for ECR in the future).

I can understand the Euro-bike only restriction when it is an exclusive Ducati event, but it's a member day (and it's such a long wait when you have to order any Duc parts...)...

Track day report...

Got up too early this morning after staying up too late last night getting ready.

Foggy and wet, but with a "it will get better" attitude...

Well, it didn't, and mid-morning they called it...  :'(

When we got home we had a few hours of cleanup...  :-\

We had no plans of riding in that stuff, but had hopes that it would burn off early.  The roads were almost dry when we left the house 75 miles away and it was just foggy.  We had hoped for it to burn off quick or be better when we got to the track.  The bad news was that it got worse. Or well got some "quality" time with my bike. ;)

I have decided to forego the April dates also.  I was going to do the 23rd, but ECR has a Member day on the 24th so I'd rather do that.  Besides, I would prefer to use my 2 SV racebikes, and I'm putting street trim back on the Duc next week.  I'm definitely in for one of the bigger AMS days (when they rent out the whole track).

I thought that having a back-up bike would be the best 'spare'...plus they can share parts between them so it simplifies a lot of things.  I have a 2004 and a 2006 and they are both set up for Superstock (so no major changes).

Hey CM do you have any Spare SV race tails that use the stock seat? I got an SV650 (great bike by the way!!!! feels like S2R, wheelies 1st 2nd easy) and im looking to install a race tail just for the look...

That's a tough question since I try to keep quite a number of spares (even a spare bike) ;D

I don't have a spare that I would like to let go at this time (if you said fuel tank - I have 3 spares so I would consider getting rid of 1).

Glad you are enjoying the SV!  By the way, if you are pretty handy, a gxsr race tail will also fit (lots of dremel work).  One of the bikes I picked up has a gsxr tail on and it looks pretty good.

FYI, I am going to ECR on a member day on Sunday. Tommy (samsonite) is coming along.  If anyone else wants to go, PM me. Planning on being there around 8:30am and will run the whole day.  You need to have track experience so if it's your first time, it wouldn't be the time to go.

All in all there were 2 - 848, 2 - 1098R, 1 - 1198s, 2 - 1098s, 2 - 996, 1 - 748RS (a hot rod with a big bore kit and cams I think it was actually a 858cc displacement according to Jeff)
