Hey guys,
I'm picking up a used '06 GSX-R600 to replace my current race bike (CBR600F4i).
Several of our Socal riders use these are track bikes, so I'd like to pick your brains. Any thoughts, inputs, opinions are welcome. In particular, what should I look for in a used bike? Any common problems that I should address with the current owner?

They have a tip-over switch that once the bike has been leaned over a certain angle it kills the engine, unfortunately, this angle is one that you might hit during a race (which would be bad), so it will need to be disabled. Other than that, i can't tell you much more as my last GSXR was an 01 and nowhere near as cool as the one you're picking up.

Derby is correct. I found a bike that was raced last year so it already has race bodywork. The majority of it is stock since the current owner is moving the aftermarket components onto a new 750.

Another thing to note... Since the GSXR is the biggest "squid" bike there are TONS of parts available on Craigslist/Ebay/Forums!
I'd suggest you start looking at the wera boards for parts - www.wera.com - click on the bbs link on the top right.
Thanks for the tip. There seems to be a plethora of parts available through the racing forums, e.g. wera, ccs, nesba, etc.
I haven't picked up the bike yet, but Derby has already told me where I'll be spending my next $1,700 disposable dollars. :)

Congrats Lester, that should be a great bike. I don't really have any more info for you as Sachica's is an '07 and there are actually quite a few differences from '06 to '07. The biggest problem I am aware of on the '07 is a some times surgey engine and a perpetual F1 error light having something to do with the butterfly valves. You may just want to be sure this is an '07 only problem (90% sure it is)

the FI/F1 error is either a mis-adjusted or disconnected exhaust valve motor.
i've disconnected and removed the valve motor and cables on my bike and have plans to disable the alert on the gauge cluster.

Yeah, the exhaust butterfly valvle is what I heard the problem was. What are the effects of disconnecting/removing the valve motor? Doesn't that have an effect on the engine or is it purley a smog thing? You'll also have to let me know how you disable it in the gauge.
Hey thanks! I think I will need your insights as 06 and 07 are the same bike (aka K6). The K7 is new for 2008. The exhaust valve, or SET valve, is something I read about. Looks like I'll need some help yanking that off the bike!

it seems it's purely there to quiet the exhaust in the lower half of the revs. consensus seems to be that defeating the valve (locking it open) gives a few more horsies/torque through the range.
to make the error go away, you pull the pin/wire from the wiring harness.

they ARE the same bike, but the 2006 is a k6, the 2007 is a k7, and the 2008 is the k8.
i'm sure you see a pattern here. ;D
the k8/2008 was a slight redesign.

Did it on my 1K and it worked (finding the wire was a bit of a crap-shoot, but I chose wisely). Light went away. Snug as a bug in a rug.
Its really easy to yank it out. Since you're buying a track bike he might already have it out.
Damn near 10 years ago, I saw an EXUP valve on an FZR1000 fill in a dip in the power curve.
This was a back-to-back test on a dyno, valve enabled/disabled.

The valve could well be controlled by a pretty sophisticated map, so part throttle stuff may be different.
Try it both ways and see how you like it, it's not an expensive experiment. ;)
I'm sure Suzuki puts it on there for *some* reason, likely noise and emissions are high on the list.
If the race teams aren't using 'em, that's the best answer of all.
