I used to say i was full face all the time only, but after quite a few 90+ humid summer days, im ready to change my tune. I want a 3/4 helmet for just those hot sticky days, the rides down the block to a friends, on the unimart. looking for a sophistocated, classy helmet here. these are relatively inexpensive, so buying top shelf is less....painful than with fullface
any highways or main roads and ill grab the full face no problem, but when you are going slow that summer heat is a killer!
So i was wondering if there are any really sexy 3/4 helmets that i should check out? i did read up on webbikeworld.com and i also searched the forum and didnt come up with much. so hopefully this isnt a derby.
i know i will get a lot of "3/4s are for squids, for locating the head" etc comments, which is fair i suppose.
ill start by listing some nice ones ive seen.
the nolan. i listed this bc the helmet doesnt look too bad if it werent for the hockey face mask. i prefer the eye shields only (yes only for aesthetical reasons)
the nexx x60. this is a high contender. these helmets are well made i can say from experience (i have the x30)
and come in many nice styles. generally, class is the name of the game here

ICE
others
(http://www.besportier.com/archives/nexx-helmets.jpg)
this helmet is sexy indeed
(http://www.thevisorshop.com/acatalog/momo_komposit300.jpg)
momo makes a lot of semi helmets, this is one of my favorites, but they all have a similar effect. im not a fan of full carbon lids, but this has just enough other things going on to not make it look overdone. the carbon also looks high quality, which is such a must bc cheap carbon looks like steaming turd.
the dainese jetstream. mixed feelings about this one because there is no denying that it looks modern, different, eye catching.... but in its strive to be modern it abandons the classic look that momo pulls off quite nicely.
i hate the shield
and yes i saved my favorite for last. im not sure if these are to be had in the US. and remember when i said these were less painful than buying fullfaces? forget that. this thing is a wallet burning meteor but its love at first sight. there is a ducati badged spitfire on ebay right now for over $600 usd
(http://www.holden.co.uk/getImage2008.asp?path=e%3A%5Cdomains%5Choldenvc%5Cwww%5Cproductimages%5C052_242.jpg&WorH=w&max=300)
damn, nice interior (picture broke, check webbikeworld.com) . looks like it should come with a maserati roadster
(http://www.speed-wear.net/images/SPIT_N_3%5B1%5D.jpg)
looks even better in white but both colors have that gorgeous flake paint
(https://www.bikex.co.uk/acatalog/spitfire_black.jpg)
the cromwell spitfire, aka masterpeice!
one more so you can see the look with a tinted shield
(http://www.quintamoto.com/producto/Fotos/spitfirecannafucil.jpg)
so any other 3/4 helmets that you guys love for those short trips down the block?
i remember a famous person in a 3/4 helmet being chased by papparazi getting on a wicked paul smart replica. the helmet he was wearing was awesome, but i cant for the life of me remember what it was. possibly a momo painted to match the PS
Like the look of the Spitfire. If you used goggles instead of a visor it could be a modern interpretation of the cafe style.
Givi has some great ones. plus they have this new 3/4+ version.

The new scorpion exo 900 full face " transforms " into a 3/4 you should check it out
sportbiketrackgear.com has a neat video review
Damn the Nexx X60 is getting me excited. I gotta go get me one of those.

I'd rather be hot than than loose my face in an accident. After my full faced helmet took 90% of an impact at 35mph in the city that saved my life/face, I understood why full faced helmets are the
only way to go.
Sexiest 3/4 helmet you ask? What's the sexiest 3/4 face that you've ever seen?
To each thier own, but I can tell you from first hand expierence that it only takes one time to know how much of a safty risk a 3/4 or less helmet really is.

i completely agree with you. and i know that it is immature to know better and still do foolish things,
but some days i hop on to ride 3 blocks in the neighborhood to the unimart or to the plaza down the street.
or go to my monster rider friends who lives a half a mile straight down a 25mph street
id rather have the option of a 3/4s over being tempted to ride with sunglasses for that one block, on that one 95f summer day
i have 3 full face helmets, this would be a handful of short rides of the year helmet. again i agree with you completely, and i know it only takes 1 fall, but .....
Try dragging your face down the street at 25 after falling from 5'+. Sorry, 100% agree with Dave...
that's what i like about that GIVI helmet.. it's as open as a 3/4 but with the impact protection of a full face.

Judging from some of the responses on this thread, you'd think Lance Armstrong is certifiably mental for wearing anything other than full leathers and a Shoei.
im an all the gear all the time kinda guy my 2 wrecks made it a simple decision, i dont think people are too preachy on this site i think its because they care and hate to see anyone they know even if its just through internet interaction get hurt in a way that could have been avoided.

Riding my road bicycle in hilly Pennsylvania I average 20mph and it's common to hit speeds of 50+ mph going down long hills, with that flimsy swiss cheese bicycle helmet. And yes, i have wrecked the bicycle being run off the road by a car coming into my lane head-on a blind downhill turn. Woman almost killed me, didn't even stop! Worst roadrash of my life so bicycle clothing is not so protective either! Helmet didn't enter into it.
They Suomys. If you can find them. The coolest 3/4 helmets.

Actually though, coming from someone relatively new to cycling, it's a frightening experience when you're so used to being fully protected from head to toe....I have a hard time understanding how bicycle helmets can really do any good given what I've learned about motorcycle helmets and impact zones.
Why not consider a MX or Motard helmet? It will give you full face protection at low speeds though I wouldnt trust it at higher ones, and you can wear it with sunglasses for eye protection. Should give you plenty of ventilation as well, as the whole front is open for airflow yet still protects your face.
Here is a pretty cool looking one for $115, the visor can come off easily as well, they can range all the way up to $500 Arai's

I have bounced my head off the pavement while crashing my bicycle riding home from work one evening (hit the curb wrong with slicks on the MTB) I was amazed how well the helmet worked! While it rung my bell pretty good, not a sratch on my head. (other parts of my body didn't fair so well though!)
yes, lets all wear less gear because people in similar yet completely different sports also wear less gear. [roll]
Do what you feel safe doing, at least your wearing a helmet, but you have to admit that in the case that you were to go down in such a way that a full face helmet would make a difference it would make a BIG difference.

I ride a bicycle as well and I am well aware that its not uncommon to ride at ~20mph all day, and on a long downhill on a road bike you could easily hit 50mph but its only in a straight line, or long slow corner and at the first sign of any problems you quickly scrub that speed down to something more reasonable.
the difference is that on a motorcycle, its not uncommon to hit 50mph+ in a tight corner hitting lean angles completely impossible on a bicycle. even stoplight to stoplight in city traffic its not uncommon to do 30mph. then you get into freeways where you comfortably cruise at ~60 until grandma decides to take your lane and wipes you out.
the similarities between motorcycles and bicycles basically end at the amount of wheels, there are plenty of ways to keep cool that dont diminish protection. using these as excuses or as justification is a silly argument.
If you want to wear it because you think it looks cool or enjoy the wind in your face fine but if/when you go down you will pay the price for that feeling. Trying to explain to the asphalt that its not a problem because cyclists dont wear X gear wont get you very far.

Wow! Now I bet that the day that your helmet saved your life was a pretty good day for you. Without it, your face would have been obliterated. I know the feeling, been there, and my helmet saved my face too.
Here's to riding safe and wearing the proper gear for when accidents happen: [beer]
I'm working on a case right now. It's a head-on between scooter v. bus in a residential area. The accident happened at probably about 15mph with the bus doing around 2 mph. Rider was wearing a 3/4 helmet. Once the case is over, I'll post pics of aftermath, the rider's facial and jaw reconstructions, and describe the rider's ongoing neurological problems. A full-face would have left the rider with just a concussion.
That said, Momo's and Roofs are cool looking. You won't catch me in one though.

Agreed. To each thier own, but it only takes one time, one accident, one careless driver in a car, to teach the lesson on why full face helmets are so insisted upon on this forum. Really, no one will bash anyone for what they really prefer (....well maybe a little), but it's just out of the lessons that many of us have learned and not wanting to see anyone be injured so badly that we all insist on them so strongly. There's certainly a certain amount of assumed risk that we all take in everything that we do - the road that you choose may not be the same as others, but it is your road.
Ride safe no matter what you wear and always love what you do. [thumbsup]

thank you.
just for the record, do you know what would be REALLY safe? if i built a crash cage around my bike. then i could build it around myself. i could add two wheels for stability and call it a car. (patent pending)
the point is that riding a motorcycle is inherently dangerous and we all have to decide how much risk we can mitigate, and how much we are willing to accept. I said that a 3/4 would be a 1% of the year helmet. in fact its cooled down here so much that i no longer need one, but i will be picking up a crom or nexx next july. and i would never consider wearing it on any road that i can go fast enough to actually move air through a full face.
my intent was to discuss gear, not bash everyone who doesnt ride atgatt. i said that i expected flaming, and after a few posts i addressed it and gave the nod. but do we really need to hear 6 posts from each person going on and on? i guess my "beating a dead horse" joke went on deaf ears. (or eyes)
anyways i dont want to harp. thank you to everyone who discussed helmets in this thread
thank you to everyone who respected my, and many many other riders right to decide what gear to wear when
and thank you to everyone else for having concern about my safety and the safety of other riders (i believed you the first time, but i still appreciate it)

When I do wear it, it gets a lot of [thumbsup]. People just seem to love it. I have to admit I thought it was pretty cool too. Was only 90 bucks. AGV is a reputable brand too.
The visor does little to protect the eyes from wind, its a good way to keep yourself under 40mph.
The pic of the monster helmet in the op is mine. The post expired but if you or any one else is still interested in it pm me an offer. I'll sell it cheap, still in the box.
Of course a full face helmet is the best, but no one should argue if someone wants to wear a 3/4 helmet. At least they're wearing something.
Look at motorcycle police. They wear 3/4 helmets.
I had a 3/4 helmet that I gave away, because I thought a full face is all I needed, but sometimes I wish I had that 3/4 helmet for some rides.
Just be aware of your surroundings, pay attention to the drivers on the road and don't ride like an idiot and you already decrease your chances of getting into an accident.
This may sound stupid and common sense, but apparently there are those riders out there that do not know how to control themselves or pay full attention to the traffic around them.
Suomy is now offering some pretty nice looking 3/4's as well. Let's get back on topic here and leave the PSA's to the surgeon general.

I did a nasty wheelie the other night wearing my half shell and dress shoes while out on the town. The problem was my leather soled dress shoes don't grip the pegs that well, so I really racked myself coming down to hard after about half a block (no need to cover the rear brake on a Ducati, engine braking is such that the slightest roll off the throttle brings it down fast). My next peice of safety gear just might be some tank grip. Nearly pulled my groin.

any highways or main roads and ill grab the full face no problem, but when you are going slow that summer heat is a killer!

ICE
others

this helmet is sexy indeed

momo makes a lot of semi helmets, this is one of my favorites, but they all have a similar effect. im not a fan of full carbon lids, but this has just enough other things going on to not make it look overdone. the carbon also looks high quality, which is such a must bc cheap carbon looks like steaming turd.

the dainese jetstream. mixed feelings about this one because there is no denying that it looks modern, different, eye catching.... but in its strive to be modern it abandons the classic look that momo pulls off quite nicely.
i hate the shield
and yes i saved my favorite for last. im not sure if these are to be had in the US. and remember when i said these were less painful than buying fullfaces? forget that. this thing is a wallet burning meteor but its love at first sight. there is a ducati badged spitfire on ebay right now for over $600 usd

damn, nice interior (picture broke, check webbikeworld.com) . looks like it should come with a maserati roadster
(http://www.speed-wear.net/images/SPIT_N_3%5B1%5D.jpg)
looks even better in white but both colors have that gorgeous flake paint
(https://www.bikex.co.uk/acatalog/spitfire_black.jpg)
the cromwell spitfire, aka masterpeice!
one more so you can see the look with a tinted shield

so any other 3/4 helmets that you guys love for those short trips down the block?
i remember a famous person in a 3/4 helmet being chased by papparazi getting on a wicked paul smart replica. the helmet he was wearing was awesome, but i cant for the life of me remember what it was. possibly a momo painted to match the PS
I wear the Dainese Jet Stream, flows a lot of air and it's extremely comfortable. Cannot get used to full face helmets so this is the best solution for me.
My vote goes to the Momo and Suomy helmets. As for the rest of this i think i am going to go out and buy a party lid to satisfy the law and do a naked (boxers... hmm maybe briefs not sure..) ride to protest the opression of the notatgatt. Don't wory though i wont post any pics. : )

Ok, we get your point.Quote from: Monster Dave on August 14, 2009, 10:43:55 AM
I'd rather be hot than than loose my face in an accident. After my full faced helmet took 90% of an impact at 35mph in the city that saved my life/face, I understood why full faced helmets are the only way to go.
Sexiest 3/4 helmet you ask? What's the sexiest 3/4 face that you've ever seen?
To each thier own, but I can tell you from first hand expierence that it only takes one time to know how much of a safty risk a 3/4 or less helmet really is.
What happen to “To each thier own,… [roll]

[thumbsup]

First of all - I've been there and know exactly what it's like jackass.
Secondly, I'd hold off on calling someone and idiot when what happened wasn't even his fault.
Really? ^^^

I was just stating my opinion. FWIW.
I didn't say anything derogatory or personally directed at anyone. You might want to check that.

This thread has reached the end of its' useful life.
I'd like to remind some folks that name calling is against the rules here.
