There was an interesting article on MSNBC on this topic this morning, within the past few days, there have been a few famous african american's in the press, not in a favorable way (Serena Williams, Kanye West, etc). I am not going to post the article as I have been accused of being "racist" before on the politics board, so PM me if you want it. It is not a racial article at all, it is an observation article by a writer in MSNBC's entertainment department.

MTV started the VMA's as publicity for their network and the videos they showed. Not so much anymore.
It seems like 4 or 5 years ago at the MTV music awards, Michael Moore jumped up on the stage and disrupted the whole scene with some political rant or other. He was on my shit list for a long time, but he's been mellow for a while now so hes been upgraded to just OK.

in a way, i kind of agree with this attitude. anyone who gets their life or political philosophy from a celebrity -- any celebrity -- is a moron.
problem for me is that so many people DO get their thinking from them.
my rule is that celebrities can think, vote and donate to whatever they want, but as soon as that microphone is used for anything but singing or performing, then I will judge them. if Kanye had used his microphone to encourage ppl to donate to MS or the march of dimes, then i would judge him favorably.
instead, he disses that girl publicly, shows the world what a selfish ass he is (again) and embarrasses the woman he sought to compliment.
I might go Democrat after this.

Would you have felt the need to point out if there'd been a three-peat of assholeism on the part of, say, white people? (I'm guessing that might turn into a full-time occupation if you did.) Is your pointing this out supposed be like sports statistics: "that's the third idiotic diatribe made by a brown-haired male between 5' 9 1/4" and 5' 9 3/8" who hails from the Midwest and dislikes green shoes in the past 17 days, Dave." Of course not. There'd be no interest in keeping track of such nonsense. The only reason for noticing in the first place or commenting in the second is an excessive interest in the race of people who do something stupid.
Any time someone makes any comment at all that has to be softened by the disclaimer that they're "not a racist," my bullshitometer readings start to peak.

Kanye West puts about as much effort and thought into his music as he does his blog:
http://idolator.com/398682/kanye-west-ghost+blogging-controversy-may-result-in-another-broken-macbook-air-pretty-soon (http://idolator.com/398682/kanye-west-ghost+blogging-controversy-may-result-in-another-broken-macbook-air-pretty-soon)
As far singer/songwriters go, there are plenty of them these days, and quite a few good ones. People with actual talent, who write and sing songs that mean something to themselves, and that people can listen to and transform into something that relates to their own lives. Songs about cars (however much i may love them), liquor (same), booty (same) and money (amen) are far from universal and have little emotional or intellectual impact on anyone that listens to them. Kanye's music is the equivalent of "Kool & the Gang" during the era when great songwriters like Tom Petty, Paul Simon, and even James Brown were making REAL music. Music that would transcend age, race, and even time.
I've heard Kool & the Gang at every wedding I've ever been to.
And Carpenters during dinner for some reason. I don't feel that Carpenters is appropriate dinner music.
