It is no secret that I am enamored with the quality and style of Dainese leather , especially the short leather Jackets.
Recently I added 5 more models to my collection.

I'm looking forward to the day I don't wince at a $400+ price tag when a jacket is on sale.
Are you driving to pick these up or having them shipped? SF and Costa Mesa aren't exactly close....
$400 is not a pitance , but Dainese is the finest purveyor of leather purpose created and styled riding Jackets and Suits plus the Corse line of Ducati which Dainese also makes IMHO so I never feel bad about being able to buy the best , especially at a discount to reg. retail.
I feel that the number of Dainese & Ducati Corse Jackets I have now will last me 'til I'm dead and gone and most will be like new especially due to their quality and the fact that I may not even wear some of them more than once or twice.

I order them over the phone since I'm in Ohio.
I have been dealing w, the D-Store in Costa Mesa for 3 years and purchased from the D-Store in San Fran 2 1/2 years at least.
Also have bought several from Moto Wheels , one of our Sponsors.
They are then shipped UPS.

I too am in love with everything Dainese. High performance, excellent style, safety, you cannot go wrong with a Dainese purchase.
My collection has just began, with a newsan jacket and delta pants, but I have an eye on my next purchase.
Have you ever been to a D-store? I've been to the SF D-store, It was very difficult not to load up my credit card with purchases. Everything looks so much better in person than from looking on line.

Danaid, I have never had the extreme pleasure of being in a D-Store.
I'm afraid if I could , I'd put a serious hurtin' on my credit card !
I have enough Jackets , Pants and Suits that I know what Dainese looks like .
I'm concerned that I'd pass out from the overwhelming bliss of the essence of all that leather in one place.

Wow that is the first time I've seen a pic of the actual merlin jacket. When I search the net all I can find are the stock photos. Is the fit true to the size chart? Did the Dstore list it for anything less than msrp?

Hi Airborne,
It is certainly more beautiful than any picture could ever convey.
The Leather is like holding a newborn baby it feels so good ! Very nice and pleasing to the touch, but very stout as far as the over all weight of the leather.
I was very lucky, I have been looking for a " Merlin " in my size , in stock somewhere for 2 1/2 years.
I just happened to call the D-Store in San Fran and they had a size 62 and 64 .Very unusual ! I normally wear a 60 but I wanted this Jacket for cooler weather so I'd be wearing possibly a heavy sweater under the micro-down liner so the 62 was just what I wanted ....and Dainese had them at 30% off which just made the deal almost too good to be true .
Fit is fantastic!
I wore it today in 50 degree windy weather doing 125 mph at times and it keep my core nice and warm w, a long sleeve T and a long john top under neath it.
Absolutely love the Jacket.
Dolph :)
that merlin is extremely sexy!
love the collection dolph, you should take a picture of it all in one place, just to make us all jealous
i hope my collection could someday rival yours, (but i wont hold my breath)

redial, my collection takes up 2 regular closets and 2 walk in closets.
I don't know how I could get everything together and be close enough to get any detail of the individual pieces.
It would definitely have to be a panorama photo.
For the time being, just use your imagination.
The " Merlin " is for now a favorite , may be 'cause of the unusually cool weather, it having the stand up collar really helps keep my neck warm.

And because its not all crapped up with a million logos. Just a nice plane jacket with good style. I wish more manufactures would make stuff like this.
Hows the length of the jacket. Is it cut to fit long or short to the belt?

It is definitely longer and you're right, not much in the way of flashy logos and writing.
Just the small silver logos on the Shoulders and the word Dainese in embossed black leather so it is barely visible.
You can wear it as a casual Jacket w, jeans.

I would say, depending on the jacket, you should fit a 56 nicely. Unfortunately, over the last couple of days, I have sold out of the Merlin with the exception of one size 50. Sorry.

I'm 6'4" 220lbs. 44" chest, 40" around the widest part of my belly. The 56 Dainese is perfect for me including a back protector, although I remove a bubble liner if it has one. So, 56 is a snug comfortable fit for me - if you at 180lbs get a 56 it will be bordering on a loose fit. IMO [thumbsup]
Airborn I'm about your height 5'11" ish and about 200. Not sure what my current chest is, but probably 44+ as well, on a 34 waist. I just snagged a 56 Santa Monica and it's a perfect fit to me. At 20 pounds less, unless you've got no meat on your legs and it's all up stop, a 56 will probably be too big by 1 notch. Of course, trying one on will be the real test. I'm a 56 jacket but needed a 58 1pc. I had trouble zipping a 56 1pc w/o a back protector. With one in I couldn't breathe.
It all depends on the jacket or suit. I was speaking directly to the Merlin which has a narrow cut. We have a huge range of cuts, and the sizing varies quite a bit because of it. I am 6'5" 260lbs and within our own line, I can wear anything from a 56 to a 64 depending on the garment. That is precisley why I dislike the fact that we even offer a sizing chart on line, and why it is important to speak to someone familiar with the line if you are unable to try the item on in person.
Hmm interesting to know there's so much variety in the line
DaineseDan,
do you know if the Gran Premio jacket and the Newsan jacket is a similar cut/fit?

Good words here. And this all leads me to a question. I am considering buying a perforated Santa Monica jacket in 52. I am currently wearing an A-Stars Alloy in 54 and the fit is not that great. It is loose in the mid-section, but a bit tight in the chest. And if anything, the arms are a touch long. There are not any shops here in Hawaii that stock much of squat, so I am always having to decide "blind". So with that in mind, do you think a 52 S. Mon. would be a good fit for me Dan? I am about 5'9" tall, roughly 185 lbs (for now, but will be down to 175 or so in a month or two). I have a 34-35" waist, and between 43-44 in chest with an average arm length of about 20&1/2" when measured from shoulder socket to wrist. Also, my neck is about 16-16&1/2".
^^^ For a perfect fit, you need to have it altered. ;) Nobody can make a leather jacket fit perfectly to 5 million people.

Not really. The Newsan is a very fitted sport cut utilizing the Bubble liner, whereas the Gran Premio is more of a square cut and has the removable ValTherm liner. Sizewise, you'd probably be in the same ballpark, but they will definitely feel different.

I think, given your measurements, a 52 would be a great fit, especially if you plan on losing weight. I would however, take a look at a couple of other jackets being that you are in Hawaii. The Santa Monica comes with a
very warm removable liner that you will never use in Hawaii. No point in paying for something you won't use. I would take a look at the Newsan or the new Racing jacket. They are very similar to the Santa Monica in style and features, but the Newsan features the Bubble liner instead of the ValTherm liner used in the S.M., and the Racing jacket has no thermal liner of any kind. Both are cheaper than the Santa Monica.
The Newsan:

BTW...the pricing on the website for the Racing jacket is incorrect. It is $599.00, not $719.00.
Just to give you a head's up, I also have the 2009 Del Mar left on clearance in size 52, marked down from $899.00 to $629.00.

Thanks for all the info Dan. One of the reasons that I do like the S.M. is that there is a pretty good chance that I will be leaving Hawaii this summer for lands unknown (big "perk" of being in the military). With that in mind, I like the fact that the S.M. can be used in such varied climates. Plus, the one that I am looking at is a perf model. Another reason that I am looking at this one so hard is the fact that the majority of it is white in color, and will satisfy most military location's requirement for light colored jackets to ride on post. I was originally looking at the Delmar, but figured that the black back panel (on the white jacket) would raise a few too many eyebrows. I was also quoted a very nice price on the S.M., close to the price of your Delmar, but shipped to me. So with that in mind, what color is your Delmar? Is it a perf? And what features would you say set the two jackets apart from each other?
Thanks again! [thumbsup]
I have the DelMar in white in both perf and non-perf versions in your size. The major differences between it and the SM is the use of D-Skin leather (depending on which model SM you are looking at, it could have D-Skin as well), the 3-D Bubble liner, and the removable neck protector. Other than that, they are quite similar. The Del Mar is much more comfortable and flexible due to the use of the Bubble liner instead of the bulky removable liner, but that is a matter personal preferance. Either jacket will serve you well.
P.S. to DoubleEagle: Sorry for so thoroughly thread jacking this!!
Got my Santa Monica in the mail today. DAMN what a nice piece of kit this thing is!! [thumbsup]

There's a lot of options there, but if you want to stay on the sport/technical side of things like your Santa Monica, the SM does come in a non-perf version, or you could go with the non-perf Newsan or Racing Pelle. If you can live without the external thermoformed armor and sliders, there are a TON of other options for you. Take a peruse through the site, and if anything catches your eye, let me know.

How do you guys take care of your leather jackets ? Is there some leather treatment things I should be doing. I have started wiping it off with dab of water after rides. I need to take better care from now on.
So far, I have been using Mother's leather cleaner/conditioner that I have from my car.
Dan, is there something you would recommend over this?
They make a cleaning and balm kit... so I'd bet that's the recommended product.
Vanson sells a bottle (10oz I think) of leather conditioner that I used on my somewhat battered A* GP gloves. A couple goes and they definitely feel better off than they did before.

We do make a cleaning and conditioning kit, but any good quality product like Luxol or Leathermasters will work fine. Just be sure to condition after cleaning, as the cleaner will strip the hide of any moisture, and that will need to be replenished.
I have very good luck with Lexol leather conditioner. Comes in a spray container that can be bought at most any Auto Parts store for about $10.
Just get a sponge and spray it about 3-4 times and wipe a section of your Jacket , Suit or leather Pants and Gloves .
I put it on so that the leather looks wet all over by continuing to spray the sponge and wiping the leather.
I have also used Mother's leather conditioner . It is more like hair conditioner in that it is thicker .
I just pour some on the leather and wipe it all over the leather.
After either has set a while you can take a soft clean towel and buff the leather to a very brilliant shine.
Dolph :)
I'm expecting a package later today and when I get it I will put some photos up of my expanding Dainese leather Jacket collection.
Dolph :)
I received a New DelMar Blk. & Wht. from the D-Store in San Francisco.
A very nice Jacket.
D-Skin leather , Bubble liner, Neck bracing apparatus ( which if you want it out of the Jacket it's easy to take out ) .Speed Hump.
The Jacket has 2 zippers near the top of the chest when unzipped allow air to flow through the Jacket and out through the 2 zipper vents on the rear sides.
Also above the front zipper vents , the whole top area is perfed, and there are 2 areas on the back of the Jacket that are perfed and along the sides is perfed as well.
The Jacket has the composite Shoulder and Elbow protection plus on each Shoulder is a thermoformed Titanium protector.
Comfort is assured w, strategic use of that lovely rolled leather also on the Elbows where they bend.
A Zipper to attach to Dainese and Ducati leather pants makes for a 2 piece leather suit.
Plus reflective piping and writing as well as logo lend safety for night riding.
Also a 2 snap neck strap and leather to Velcro side adjusters for the perfect fit.
Zipper cuffs w, leather tabs for the sportiness needed while riding a motorcycle.
All in all another master piece by Dainese.

That's a NICE jacket, Sir [thumbsup]
Question for you: the new Racing Pelle might be my choice. It's ordinary cowhide though, not D-skin. Do you have any insight worth sharing? Will I be dissapointed?
Lars,
I don't have any first hand knowledge of the Jacket you are interested in.
I have seen it on the Dainese website .
If Dainese makes it I don't think you will be disappointed.
Maybe if you compared it to a D-Skin Jacket side by side you would realize the softness of the D-Skin vs Cow leather and maybe some of the other comfort features may not be built in ....but if you like the Racing Pelle then especially if you have seen it in person by all means go with your preference.
The one area where I am not so turned on by the Racing Pelle is it has just a sanitized liner . I really like the 3-D Bubble liner for 3 season climate control. That's one of the things that separates the total package from the somewhat lacking in complete comfort Jacket.
Dolph :)
You're robably right, anything Dainese will be above average in leather quality.
I tried on a jacket with 3D bubble liner and thought the liner made it a little bulky. I'm used to adjusting to the climate by changing what I wear underneath - I can see the convenience of an all purpose 3D liner, but I hope to be fine with the sanitized liner and high quality technical underwear.
Thanks for helping [thumbsup]

No problem.
We all had to adjust our own climate control ourselves before the 3D-Bubble liner so it's not like it's anything new.
I just like the convenience of the all in one climate control.
You're right Lars, it does add weight to the Jacket.
My problem has always been guessing how much extra to wear and then do I wear a perfed or non-perfed Jacket and I usually end up guessing on the side of too much clothes and then I'm sweaty and not comfortable .
I found w, the other DelMar that I have that opening and closing those zippered vents work really well.
Dolph :)
Nice looking jacket, Dolph!
To threadjack some more ;D, DDan, I need a perf jacket to use in (incredibly) hot Louisiana. I don't want a bubble liner for obvious reasons, and I really like the Racing Pelle, but unfortunately, all that white would end up looking nasty with all the bugs we've got here. When I come home from a ride, my visor and bike are literally crusted, and unlike Dolph, I can't see myself doing a full clean and condition every time I ride ;)
Any advice?

Damn...
If all that leather was still on cows you would have a ranch by now.
Yeah, there are a several Cows hanging in my closets.
At least I don't have to feed them !
Dolph ;D

To be honest, our newer standard hides are so nice, you would be hard pressed to tell the difference from D-Skin even if you had two jackets side-by-side to compare.

Take a look at the Air jacket. It should fit the bill nicely. [thumbsup]
It's fully perfed, front and back, and has no thermal liner at all.
