Title: Helmets
Post by: yang258 on October 12, 2009, 05:59:29 PM
Hi,

Looking to buy a new helmet, I have been to most sites and am struggling to find a design I fancy. You guys seen anything that you have been impressed with recently? Im thinking of just going matt black because of this....

Thanks

i actually prefer solid colors, but haven't been able to find the right fit in a solid in a few years.

for myself, i wont buy a helmet that i cant try on/wear around for a bit.
even if its the same brand and model as my last one.

Under the gear section, there's a topic about posting your lid; a lot of people have  shared their 2 cents on a wide variety of helmets.

Find a brand that has a model that fits you, then look at graphics. I bought a solid black because it was on sale. As far as graphics goes, ill just throw some stickers on it and call it a day!

design should be the last thing you look at during your decision process.

I recently purchased a Shark RSR2 and it has been one of my favorite helmets, comparable to my Arai RX7. Incredibly light, great air flow, and is very safe. I'm not a fan of black helmets or black gear in general.......asphalt camoflauge. As bright as I can stand is the rule

Rockhard are pretty fun as well. I was pissed when Moto Liberty didn't have the Elvis in my size when I discovered them.

While I agree that I like Arai's fit, weight, and ventilation, lets all be reminded of the helmet tests that have debunked myths about protection increasing as cost increases. A very safe helmet does not need to cost $500+. The additional cost in the 'top tier' helmets is found more in the weight, ventilation, and who sponsors riders.

While "design" shouldn't be the first thing on a person's mind when selecting a helmet, its not THAT far down the list.

I would recommend:
Certification (DOT, SNELL, etc) - If it ain't certified, you are taking a gamble (and likely its a new or off brand).
Fit / Comfort - Some high dollar brands don't fit my melon like other helmets do. I have a Shoei shaped dome, apparently.
Fancy Features - Vents, pull down visor shade, wind/fan powered LED lights, Rossi's O-Face plastered a-top it, and other flashy graphics

I would also consider intangibles like Company / Customer interaction. There's a lot to be said for the company that will x-ray your lid if you drop it for inspection purposes. (Then again, who benefits if it fails the inspection they perform?)

Food for thought.

+1 - I recently had my Hayden Wired Arai repaired by them for free under warranty (issues with failing adhesives).  The helmet was "born on"  9/2003 so I just made it under the 7-year wire.  Any company that'll honor its "consumable" product for that long has my vote and future business.  Yes, it's probably 'included in the price' of a new helmet but I was impressed, anyway.

Now, if Ducati would only honor their stock valve guides in a similar way   [roll]

I have a Shoei X-11 Yellow that I have worn for 3 years in rotation with about 10 other Helmets that I have . It fits me fine and I have no complaints about it.

I have only ( out of 15 Helmets that I have bought in the past 4 years ) tried on one Helmet . All the others have been bought on line and I by the same size in Arai when it was RX-7 or Quantum 2 or Shoei X-11 or RF-1000 or Suomy or Nolan and they all work.

You really should go with a bright color so that you stick out in traffic so you have a better chance to be seen by the motoring public.

Go find a color you like that is bright, make sure it is DOT and Snell approved and make sure it fits you. Wear it around the store for 15 minutes to make sure it doesn't give you a headache or have hot spots . It will feel foreign to you at first but make sure it is pretty snug so that when you have it secured it won't move forward or backward with any ease. It should be .....snug. Shake your head from side to side to make sure the Helmet doesn't move on you. If all these things seem ok , then buy it.

I always wear a silk Helmet liner . They cost around $15-$20 and will keep the inside of your helmet fresh and clean. Just rinse out the Helmet liner after each ride  ( which takes like 5 minutes ) and hang it to dry. All my Helmets look brand new on the inside . Don't forget a good pair of earplugs . The sound of the wind at 35 mph and faster will cause hearing loss . I like the ones that I got at a Fastenal store that sort of screw in to your ear and are on a very thin plastic cord . They can be used over and over by washing them after each use in soap and water . They cost $1.70.

Hope this helps.

I'm thinking of trying an Akuma helmet for my next one. I want to try out their spiffy new visors.

It's not so much about the graphics .

If someone likes some thing and you don't , that doesn't make a Helmet any better or worse.

You want the Helmet to be seen in traffic, , to offer the best protection and fit,to feel comfortable , and offer creature comforts like good venting , good soft padding, easy to replace Visors, but it must be DOT and either Snell or the EU equivalent approval rating.
