Title: Accident just happened...
Post by: Duc L'Smart on January 23, 2010, 10:07:21 AM
Doesn't sound too bad, but WiWa was hit by a truck while on a bicycle training ride. 1 other teammate was hit as well. Malynn is with him at a hospital in Denton. He was just wheeled in for a CT scan, but Malynn said he was lucid & could feel/move everything. More if I hear something.
Nothing to do atm, just send positive energy/healing thoughts/prayers.

Road bikes. One of the most dangerous activities out there.

Wish him our best. Hope he's feeling okay.

Thanks the well wishes. In a hospital room right now waiting for results from a second ct scan. They found some fractures in my lower vertebraes. Not the main ones but the little wing shaped ones on the side. The morphine is working nicely. ;) looks like I get to stay the night.

I'll post more details later; just wanted to say thanks for the kind words.

Sounds bad, but not horrible, if you know what I mean. Rest up and hope you get a hot nurse  [bacon]

...and now for the vengeance. Did they catch the a-hole that hit you guys?

My friend Rob got hit last year. Destroyed his high$$ race bike and beat him up. Mostly bruising and rash. The perp stopped, fortunately.

Yes, the truck stopped, Highway Patrol showed up, don't know about insurance.

Just talked to Will, & he sounded good. Meeting with the spine doctor tomorrow... Sounds like he'll be in a brace for awhile, but hopefully nothing more serious.

Glad to hear the villain stopped. Take plenty of evidence photos of injuries and such. They can be useful for future dealings with insurance company.

 >:( This is very upsetting !  Sorry to hear y'all got smacked Will.  Let me know if there is anything I can do to help fetch & carry since you will probably need to take it super easy for a while.

The laws about hitting pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists need to change - stricter laws & more jail might make people keep a safe distance from those most vulnerable on the road.

Praying for a quick and full recovery - speak up if you need anything !  [beer]

Will, good to see you posting and the morphine is doing the trick.  I dropped my chain on a rough patch and never could catch back up.  I did see you guys leaving the mall parking lot as I was just about to cross the intersection.  Ended up waiting for the other group to catch up and ride with them.

Last I heard, Tyler, the other rider was ok but expecting a lot of soreness.  The 3rd rider in the group narrowly avoided the front end of the truck and did give an accurate story to the LEO.

Everybody on the Team is/was very concerned once we were informed.  Did you have your Garmin on the bike when the accident happened?  It wasn't there when your bike came back to the mall.  BTW carbon fiber is some tough shit.  Your bike didn't look too damaged other than needing some truing.

You my friend are a tough mofo to take a hit from a out of control truck

Me too. Wow, glad you are OK William. Told you, those bicycles are dangerous. Stick to motorcycles, much safer. [laugh]What's all this stuff about villains, vengeance, jail time and laws needing to be changed? Don't know any details other than what has been reported here but it sounds like an accident. Out of control truck sure sounds like an accident. I see nothing about the driver being arrested or charged with anything. He stopped, talked with law enforcement. I hope he has insurance. I live near White Rock Lake, tons of cyclists (Bryant can concur), not all drivers are a-holes towards cyclists but sometimes accidents happen. I'm sure William will post details. Let's take a deep breath and just be glad William is OK. That to me is the only thing that is important. [thumbsup] Take care William.

Hey guys. Just got home from the hospital. Stayed the night there with Will last night. Dr wants to keep him there another night for pain mgmt. He said something about oral meds wouldn't do the trick right now and if Will had any spasms it would do more damage. Plus the spine dr will see him tomorrow.

As for the driver of the big truck that hit him, he is a villian in my book. Tyler said after they got hit and were on the ground the guy was spinning his back wheels throwing up dirt on them. To me that sounds like he was seriously trying to take off but was stuck in some barb wire between some trees or something. Wasn't there but that's what Tyler told me. Just glad he was sell there when the trooper got there. Although the trooper wasn't the coolest either telling will he shouldn't be cycling on those roads. I'm sure he meant it as a nice piece of advice but it didn't really come out sounding like it.

Good news is will is generally in one piece and feeling as ok as he possible can after something like this. It definately could've been WAY worse so thank goodness for that.

Thank you all for the well wishes. I can't wait for him to come home.  Just gotta figure out a way to set him up comfortably downstairs. The bed is upstairs and the dr said he probably won't want to be climbing up any stairs

Malynn, we've got an air inflatable matress that's 6" thick or so we'd be happy to donate to the cause.  It uses queen size sheets and is very comfortable.  I can cruise it over to your house tomorrow if you think Will might use it?

Hang in there girl - we're all thinking about you  :)

Thanks to everyone who posted up. That definitely helped keep my spirits up.

I talked with the spinal surgeon today and he said it should take about 4-5 weeks to recover. I won't have to wear a back brace and I shouldn't have any long term issues. What a relief that was to hear.

Hey guys and gals. Here's an update on the last few days. I was able to get home mid-day Monday and I've been trying to take it easy since. Yesterday I was feeling pretty good and tried to do too much so I'm feeling it today. I'm on Celebrex and Lortab which is keeping the pain in check but my brain is all sorts of slow and IZ_ so I don't know how that's going to work for me tomorrow when I try to get back to work.

I spoke to an attorney yesterday who's also a cyclist and he'll be helping me navigate all the insurance issues and also will help me to get my property damage claim dealt with. It looks like my carbon fiber frame is jacked up so it's going to be a sizable claim that normal auto adjusters have a hard time understanding. High-end cycling equipment is not cheap.

Remember to take photos of all your bruises so when the insurance company says it couldn't have been all that bad, you'll have proof of your sub-orbital launch.

I decided to heed your advice and took the rest of the week off. My employer offers STD :o (Short Term Disability) and my State Farm policy has Personal Injury Protection so I should be covered for the lost wages through those. M and I picked up a new 52" Sony Bravia last week and we just got Direct TV installed after a long sabbatical without cable so I've got plenty to keep me occupied. M's parents gave her a PS3 for her birthday so I've been taking advantage of that as well. The HD graphics on the one game we have (MotorStorm) are unbelievable.
