Well so I'm told.
Had a call from George this afternoon with the question do you want the good news or the bad news.
I said well, the good news is it's fixed, the bad news is it cost $$$ to do so.
Basically I was right, fixed it is and in the end it was the starter motor causing the problems.
So reco-ed starter in and she's back to life.
I'll be going out Thursday to collect it so I'll let you know after a ride of course.
I can now say I'll be there for our next little outing in April and not on the scooter.

Well that is excellent news matty, but you did look rather cool on the scoot [thumbsup]
thats great news Matty ....it was quite a saga......it felt like we were up to chapter 10.............have fun and enjoy your first ride back....as you roll on thru the corner ....you will forget about the $...... [laugh] [laugh] [laugh]
Congrats Matty. This is great news. Look forward to seeing you out on the road soon! [beer]
Yeah [thumbsup] [thumbsup] [thumbsup]
Hey Matty, want to go for a cruise tomorrow .Get rid of the cobwebs ?Nothing too serious. see how its going ?
Won't have bike back till Thursday.
Scooter had to go back today Jukie, I miss it already.
Hooray, great news Matty. [thumbsup] [moto]
My bike was getting hard to start cold.
Mike at Desmo clinic. [thumbsup]
Said check the starter motor.
On sunday dropped out the starter it was shagged
and the sprag gear clutch.
Have to take of the alternator cover just to remove the starter motor.
and remove the fly wheel to get the sprag clutch out.
Got good low klm used parts coming from the US Desmo porsche.
And cheap ;)
Top news Matty [thumbsup].... What a barsted that its taken so long to snif out the problem. still better new regarding the starter than ECU. At least you can use a reconditioned starter which shouldn't be too $$$

... but a new one (coming from one of the 'Stroodle guys on Turismo) will probably cost you ECU type money
nice work mate!
Matty, did they say what was actually wrong with the starter motor?
That's good news Matty.
There is something to be said of self diagnosing of car/bike problems. You were correct in the starter motor yet it's taken a while for mechanics to find that out. Trust your instincts mate, you were obviously on the ball [thumbsup]
good to hear Matty, glad your good to go again...

Hey Rob s how many km's had you done? Just curious to know the life of a starter before it dies..
Same question to you Mattyvas - and good work and happy to hear your bike is back - some great lessons learned from your trials! Happy and safe cruising! ;D [moto]

I'll get more details when I pick it up, but something about current. Drawing too much was what George said.

My bike just turned over 20 000klm. :'(
And not to sure if that is the right klm's ,the bike had a dubious service history. and looks like it's done way more. [bang]
Also depends if it's commuter klms, allot of short trips.
or hwy klm's on how long things last. :)
Yep mine's just on 20,000k's
I know it's genuine cause I know the previous owner ;)

Funny, some would say the opposite cause they know the previous owner...
OK, now I am expecting to wake up next to a horse head.
As always, just stirring the pot [cheeky]
Finally got it back this morning.
OMFG, I almost fell off in the first 100 metres, forgot how brutal it is.
I think I'll have to learn to ride it all over again.
yes Matty you are not on the scoot scoot scooter, take it easy it will come back to you and ENJOY
Yes I will, oh and new bits added also, had a nice little pill of bits waiting to go on. ;D

The best way to transport a horse to destination is to ride it there 8)
After a good run the head will keep the receiver warm on a cold winter night [thumbsup]
Giddy up snuggles 8)
Il never forget my first horse head ,It brings tears to my eyes thinking of that joyus moment

quite common with big V twins, the usual cause is a discharged battery, if you don't ride the bike every day use a battery tender, trying to start a bike with a partially flat battery causes much greater draw in amps which not only burns out the brushes but can/will also shag the sprag clutch also. cheap insurance for the starter as well as extending the life of the battery and the reg/rec unit as well.
paul.
Rob I suspect your bike has done more milage than is shown. With the starter motor struggling and the noise coming from the sprag bearing the end game is coming up fast. The bike tuned well and with the co's reset it really was running nice.
With those couple of issues addressed it will be happy days again! [thumbsup]

not necessarily, my post above yours is from experience with the same issue, and mine croaked at about 15K. i've had it since new so i know the klms are correct, and the reason was as stated above, i never start mine unless it's been on the tender overnight and have had no more issues.
paul.
Yes, your point is valid - low battery voltage will accelerate the process. In Robs case he uses his bike as a daily commuter, the battery voltage and the charging rate checked out ok - I don't know the history of the bike, this is the only time I've seen it.

if you don't ride the bike every day use a battery tender,
any recommendations? i.e. brand, where to you got yours from etc?
cheers :)
most bike shops sell them, mine is an epicycle one, cost me $65 and came with a plug end with two eye lugs already crimped on, my tail hides under the side cover and i flick it out and plug it in when parked up in the garage.

Cheaper from here, they sell a battery to suit monsters also.
