My bike was getting hard to start cold.
Mike at Desmo clinic. [thumbsup]
Said check the starter motor.
On sunday dropped out the starter it was shagged
and the sprag gear clutch.

Have to take of the alternator cover  just to remove the starter motor.
and remove the fly wheel to get the sprag clutch out.

Got  good low klm used parts coming from the US Desmo porsche.
And cheap ;)

Hey Rob s how many km's had you done? Just curious to know the life of a starter before it dies..

Same question to you Mattyvas - and good work and happy to hear your bike is back - some great lessons learned from your trials!  Happy and safe cruising!  ;D [moto]

Matty, did they say what was actually wrong with the starter motor?

I'll get more details when I pick it up, but something about current. Drawing too much was what George said.

My bike just turned over 20 000klm. :'(
And not to sure if that is the right klm's ,the bike had a dubious service history. and looks like it's done way more. [bang]
Also depends if it's commuter klms, allot of short trips.
or hwy klm's on how long things last. :)

Funny, some would say the opposite cause they know the previous owner...

OK, now I am expecting to wake up next to a horse head.
As always, just stirring the pot  [cheeky]

Finally got it back this morning.
OMFG, I almost fell off in the first 100 metres, forgot how brutal it is.
I think I'll have to learn to ride it all over again.

The best way to transport a horse to destination is to ride it there  8)

After a good run the head will keep the receiver warm on a cold winter night [thumbsup]

quite common with big V twins, the usual cause is a discharged battery, if you don't ride the bike every day use a battery tender, trying to start a bike with a partially flat battery causes much greater draw in amps which not only burns out the brushes but can/will also shag the sprag clutch also. cheap insurance for the starter as well as extending the life of the battery and the reg/rec unit as well.

Rob I suspect your bike has done more milage than is shown.  With the starter motor struggling and the noise coming from the sprag bearing the end game is coming up fast.  The bike tuned well and with the co's reset it really was running nice.

With those couple of issues addressed it will be happy days again! [thumbsup]
