Title: Single mirror riding
Post by: TresGatos on May 11, 2010, 05:25:15 PM
I'm considering riding (when I can) with just the unbroken
left side mirror.
Any thoughts on this?  Bad idea?

I'm in the same boat right now. I'm sure its slightly unsafe but it's doable. You just have to get used to looking over your right shoulder more often than usual.

Ok, thanks. At least I'm not alone.
It's good to have a two mirrorbike in the garage too ;D

Unless its against the law, the only drawback I'd see is that it won't "look" symmetrical. When I was in TN, I rode with only one CRG for a long time. My wife bought me a mate for the other bar thinking I just hadn't gotten around to it, so now I have two, but not because I felt like I needed it. You can only look in one at a time - and it doesn't matter which one you look into to watch for traffic at stoplights, and beyond that - I do head turns while moving.

Who needs symmetry?

No worries. I do it all the time. Just remember there might be something you dont see in the mirror. Adjust your riding accordingly.

I think two mirrors are a must.  I just rode back from North Carolina with only my right mirror.  A rubbernecking Harley clipped me and knocked off my left mirror.  I really hated the ride without the mirror.  A lot of looking over my shoulder.

There is a lot of shoulder looking, but I do that anyways with  a mirror. My triumph sprint has very good stock mirrors and I still head check before lane changes.

one mirror can be done, you just need to realize what areas you aren't seeing. With a convex bar end mirror on my left, I can see the right lane about 20 feet behind me

I'm actually considering keeping the one with broken glass.  It still works and I kind of like having my own person non-traditional flawless mod.

But the lane splitters that Stan is offering are great [thumbsup]

I'm using one mirror now and I do not like it,  the right one broke off whilst riding back on Sunday, I had to remove it and slip it into my jacket as we cruised home.

The left one did the same last year and AMS replaced it with the 'new' design, at least they will match when this one is replaced.

It broke on Sunday?  How did you manage that?!

it had been loose for a couple of weeks, finally gave out on the way home. It was resting on my hand so I had to pull it off before it flew down the road.

I blame it on Will  [evil]

There were two plastic end caps on my front axle when I left on Sunday morning... Gone by the time I got home  [bang]  [laugh]

I was just funnin'.  ;D
actually the next day it felt so good I was in a good mood
all day. I guess all that pushing and bending was helpful.

The worst part was near the end when it felt like
it was splitting open.  :oThat on top of everything else
was just more than I could handle.  My envelope
has been pushed 8)

Yeah, the only reason I know they are plastic - or even there for that matter - is because Triumph will be more than happy to sell you some chrome ones; they've got an accessory catalog that holds its own pretty well against the likes of Ducati and HD...

Must.  Resist.  Temptation...  [laugh]

I almost like the cracked one on the 695. It still
works and reminds me to be more careful.

Like RickMillerTX, I lost my LS mirror when side-swiped by a taxicab.  Rode with one mirror for about 3 weeks (Rick came over and helped my repair the broken mirror).

I felt very unsafe (like driving a car without wearing the seatbelt).  Here's why: as mentioned, you have to turn your body and look over your shoulder to see if anyone is there - when you do that, you take your sights completely off everything that's happening in front of you.  Somebody cuts in front from the other side, slows or stops abruptly and you have a face full of cage (or truck).  I use both mirrors and a head check - but the advantage is that the mirrors tell me if I even need to do a head check.  If my mirror shows some big-ass truck or SUV, I don't need to turn around to confirm.

Look, it's all about the odds.  If it's safer or just as safe to have no mirror, would you remove them, even if they're not broken?  The fact that you asked tells me you have doubts about the safety - fix it as fast as you can.  Be safe.  Be with us for a while longer.
