Title: [SYD & Surrounds] Ozmo Ride Sun. 5th December - Jenolan Caves, etc
Post by: Betty on November 01, 2010, 03:15:55 PM
Sounds like a plan is forming:

Quote from: J5 on October 28, 2010, 10:33:09 PM
head up bells
across to mt vic
jenolan caves , make broom broom noises through the cave drive
oberon , get fuel at the servo , mobil? end of town and pick up some ammunition there ;)
out to oconnell pub for a bite to eat
continue to tarana , maybe have lunch there ?
back past lake lyall ? which amazing is full of water again
into lithgow at the shell on gt western,
then back down bells and home

no dirt this way , you get dirt if you go to tarana from the middle of oberon instead of going out to oconnel

good day 350+

for an overnight , also head out to sofala , maybe a bathurst detour

Which means it is time for a specific ride thread.

So far we have:

Matty
Dez
Mrs Dez
and a few other implied responses

Lets start a proper list and proper plans. As a west ride I would suggest the usual meet up at MacDoobies at Rouse Hill, someone that has an idea of times, etc should post a preferred meet and start time.

All you peoples that continually say you 'should get out and meet up for a ride' this is another opportunity ... these rides are very social and the Pace (inference intended) is dictated by those there on the day - in other words you will not be pushed.

Sunday 5th December

+1

love this ride, great roller coaster ride back into lithgow

830 depart ? its a long day

can i suggest the maccas at richmond rather than rouse hill  as its straight up bells from there so no getting lost in the traffic

there is a caltex across from the maccas , this would also give those with bad fuel range a little bit of breathing space

How do people feel about J5's suggestion for an 8:30 depart from Richmond

(I know someone that won't be too happy about having to leave home around 6:00am)

I don't think it's that necessary seeming as we are now in daylight savings there is no real need to leave at sparrows fart.
If we're talking about 350-400 k's that's not a really long day.

I think the key will be to arrive at our intended lunch destination at an appropriate time ... so it needs someone that knows the route to plan/map it out ... the work backwards to a departure time.

Just remember you might have me along slowing you all down.

i stuck a map up here

http://www.motowhere.com/maps/route/richmond-oberon-tarana-richmond (http://www.motowhere.com/maps/route/richmond-oberon-tarana-richmond)

its 130k to oberon from richmond and prob a couple of hours  stop for fuel then about 20 mins out to oconnell pub for lunch

so about 3 hours i guess for round figures

been a while since i have done this one

we dont go down into jenolan caves as iirc there is dirt out the other side, besides the fact of tourist buses down there

Just as an FYI the last 3 times I/we've riden down into and out of Jenolan Caves there is no dirt out the other side into Oberon.
Unless we have gone a different way but there seems only one road out.

ok fair enough can make some noise in there then ;)

from richmond through the cave its 156k to oberon and about 2.5 hours to oberon so says google maps

stop for fuel oberon and 20 mins to oconnell pub

Jealous much.  Have done these roads (on my own).  You need to factor in 'chin wag time' for your rides though. Just an idea.

it may well be.... just need to ensure that I have my new front end sorted by then - a few niggles to sort out - had some issues with my rotors which seems to be solved, and I'm in need of a brake light switch - nearly there...

oh, and then there's the topic of getting permission from the Bronster...

The trick with having 1 point is just don't be *first*  [evil]. and ride next to a monster the same colour as yours, so they can't work out which "red ducati" they need to pull over.

Had a little dog training day this morning
up the old road with the cheese n kisses .
Road was empty and dry and only a spatering of old mates [leo]

Both dogs did very well with their new owners.
Mine is a little head strong and cranky...........needs a tight lead  ;D.

The old dog enjoyed its new owner and behaved very well, both mongrels
came home for a good bath and feed.

So all going well they should be in good shape for this next group outing and behave themselves ,cant say the same for their trainers  [evil]

Maybe Jukie should bring her whips and chains to keep them in order. ;D

For someone that knows the route and our intended lunch venue ... are these sort of numbers likely to create a problem? I am in no way trying to dissuade anybody from attending ... lets make it huge!

Considering the number of riders I think we should give some serious thought to how we might handle things. The beauty of this group is that we largely know 'our place' ... by that I mean most people know where they are in the 'pace' pecking order. We don't normally have mass overtaking maneuvres, in fact we don't see much overtaking at all ... which makes things less intimidating and infinitely safer. It is a social ride after all.

All this is good but we do end up getting strung out a bit - not a problem, as such, but waiting times can get a bit long for the quicker peoples. Although it might take a bit of organising I propose we consider two or more groups for this one. That way we won't have a big group waiting in the sun (hopefully) for everybody to arrive at every junction.

With everybody meeting at the same place for the start, lunch and maybe fuel ... with the smaller groups re-grouping at the junctions along the way. Let me know if you think this can work (or if its a completely shithouse idea) so we can come up with a plan ... and hopefully no one will get lost this time.

We will obviously need a few more people to ride point and tail (for the sub-groups) if this is the way we go ... so give it some thought and let us know :)

just had a chat to the pub for lunch at oconnell pub, she says they have a couple of functions on but will be able to accomodate us , may take some time with lunch but hey got all day i guess , or failing that we could go to tarana instead for lunch

grouping

head up bells there is no where to get lost and have a regroup at bell turnoff (good spot for a leak or smoke )

head along to mt vic at speed limit as cops get along there so no drama with getting lost

from there its a turn right and down the hill and a turn off to jenolan caves all the way to the caves

prob have a regroup there and then out the other side all the way into oberon

fuel there which will take some time obviously

head to end of town and turn right iirc out to oconnell pub

same going home there is a couple of places to regroup, no real turn offs to get lost at

Excellent idea Betty.

With the numbers on the last run up to see Claudio for lunch I tried to suggest this but it was very late and we didn't really stick to it.

Couple of thoughts to add to what you've said.
Yes I agree two groups is a great idea but we can't all be in the slow group, when it was pitched last time everyone wanted to be in the slow(er) group. People have to think of their own pace and how comfortable they are with the other people that will be out for the day.

Each group will need a lead and sweep to keep a count on numbers, there are not many places to get lost along the way riding out there. May I also suggest that when it comes to re-grouping that people stay on there bikes waiting for the numbers to arrive and be ready to move off again. Helmets offs and chin wagging at mid points will extend the day.

Great thinking too J5 to call the pub where we are planning on going to see if they can handle us (roudy crowd), I'm sure we are all happy to get over to Tarana instead. Seems as though you have knowledge of the places, do you want to see if they can fit us in.

Should we get an idea before the day of who's riding where?
I'll bring the 17mm and maybe the 300mm so we can get a long shot also.

Sounds like a good plan J5
May I make a suggestion about fueling ,
after the last big group ride watching the
cluster make the beast with two backs of twenty bikes filling and paying
how about every one has  say $15 ?  ready in cash,
fill your tank and pass the cash to the rider next in line last guy gets to either pay
the bill or do a Ned Kelly  ;D
Now who wants to be last ?

Some of us did that on the last group ride fueling up at the end of the Putty.

My 2cents :-\
While i am still only a maybe, as precious has gone back to the repairers, and still having nightmares about crashing through another bike at 100kph :o
And possibly of to Tazzi for 2 weeks about then,  now Bazz has left the place it is safe to go there. [roll]

May i suggest that changing our regular meet point from Rouse hill will confuse a few that aren't switched on. ??? ??? (Dez)
And the last Bells ride the route Nickati took us up the start of the putty road then hooked a left up Kurmond rd to Kurmond the right on to Bells line
Not a bad little detour. [thumbsup]

And while stopping at Bell is good for the guys no facility's for the ladies. :'(
Probably best to continue the 12klm to Mt Vic and stop at the caltex servo for fuel for the dreaded s4rs and a comfort stop for the ladies :P

All good points Rob.
We have met at Richmond in the past, it is a good start point also. It maybe makes for on less fuel stop (for me) anyway.
I do remember that detour, it is a great way of getting further up the hill and traffic.

If we are gonna be getting *big* numbers, maybe we should just consider eating at Oberon instead.

Beginning of the route sorta like this: http://bit.ly/9vEUkQ (http://bit.ly/9vEUkQ) [Testa friendly and pretty straight forward once you get past Richmond]

Ettamogah Pub Caltex.       0km
regroup causeway @ Bell
Mt Victoria Caltex.             ~100kms
regroup carpark on the other side of the Cave (Vroom! Vroom!)
Oberon Main Street. (fuel, cafes, junk food, bakeries, etc). ~100kms

Return route via ???  (Maybe Duckmaloi road) back to wherever (past lake lyall? I dunno. I  miss ferries and people get dirty :-[)

I know this bit. No, really!

That looks good Craig.
Lunch can be had in Oberon, I guess it depends how long it takes for the tail to arrive at the lunch stop.
The return path looks  [thumbsup] I have been down that road once before in an XR5 Focus  ;)

Sounds like fun.

I know my little Monster is sitting in the shed, but would it be OK if I tag along on my ST4?

Oh, I did a little run up to the caves last week (in the pouring rain) with a couple of work mates and the Jenolan Caves road was having work done on it, so that means patches of dirt, four patches If I remember correctly.

Awesome, numbers are looking upward of twenty (approaching 30 :o 8)) ... and there is still plenty of time for more to jump on board [thumbsup]. Matty you had better bring the wide angle lens.

For someone that knows the route and our intended lunch venue ... are these sort of numbers likely to create a problem? I am in no way trying to dissuade anybody from attending ... lets make it huge!

Seems to have us back meeting at Rouse Hill, is this correct? If this involves a detour of Richmond we need to make sure we get the meeting place right. S'pose it would make the meeting time a tad earlier too.

So is it an 8:30 for 9:00 depart at Rouse Hill Caltex/McDoobies/Ettamawhatsy Pub?

... and a few other housekeeping things ...

Please make sure you have the phone number of a few other people on the list ... handy for late-running, plan changes (eg weather), or (heaven forbid) if someone gets lost.

Also I hope you have all given some thought to which 'group' you are likely to ride in ... and as Matty suggested don't be too modest.

All fantastic points Betty.

Speaking to J5 on Saturday regrading lunch, the thought is that it might be best to eat in Oberon.
There will be more options for lunch, as we have what looks like the largest group ever eating together might well prove difficult. In Oberon we can split up, fuel up have lunch and reconvene for the return at an agreeable time.

This might well take to the stress out of finding a single place to feed us all.

And yes when it comes to "groups" not everyone can ride in the slow-er group.
We have all ridden with each other enough to know peoples pace and comfort level, that said none of us are crazy mo-f's
when it comes to riding, you might think those up front ride very fast but you might also be surprised at how moderate the pace really is.

safe to assume that the stops can be used to switch pace if we feel the urge or need!?! being an unknown and all, dibs starting in the slow group please.

and lastly, how good is the majority of the groups fuel milage? ive been getting as low as 160kms a tank with spirited riding lately :o

Am I correct in remembering you ride an 800? If so (@ 160km a tank) you are likely to be in the lead group. But don't worry about economy too much the 4 valvers will be filling up by then.

In the interests of starting to get people thinking about groups, here's my take on where people who I have ridden with typically find themselves... Don't get all upset if I've put you in the wrong spot - just reply with appropriate changes.. There's a whole list down the bottom that I have not categorised, either becasue I've not ridden with you (or perhaps only once) or (in the case of Dez) perhaps you're looking after a newer rider.. Either way, please place yourselves in a group - if you're not sure, then take the slower of two options...

As a veteran of many group rides here, I'd like to point out a few other things:
- Make sure you're bike and you are prepared - check tyres, indicators, brake lights etc before the ride. Make sure you're fillled up and ready to go on time.
- Ride your ride, at a pace your comfortable with. If your feeling that you're holding the person behind up, wave them on at a safe place. This is one of the reasons we want to grade people's comfortable pace - it makes it safer for all.
- We wait for everyone at major turns. Don't sweat it if you're a way behind the rider in front. We will wait.
- At stops, get things done like toilet stops, refueling, checking tyres etc before socialising - it makes for a quicker stop and less frustration by all.
- Make no mistake, a group ride of around 30 people is much slower than a group of 4 or 6. It's going to be a long and hopefully enjoyable day, so starting out with that in mind should hopefully lead to less frustration.

We encourage riding "The Pace", where it's not about top speed and the like, but rather skill and correct street cornering techniques, such as late apexing.

Mrs Dezmonster will be in the slow group (no matter what she keeps telling me  [bang] [laugh])
So anyone in that group please keep an eye on her.
I probably will be vacillating between the two groups up front for a little fun trying to keep up with the 4V's then
waiting for Luba to check on her fatigue levels and comfort.

Remember everyone to have cash ! at least two twenty and two five dollar notes ready for the fuel stops
to pass to the person behind you at each fill up re: page 4

Betty it seems as this is your ride having started the thread ,
with so many riders maybe some structure before the ride on leaders and sweep
being allocated  may make it a little smoother on the day ?

This is going to be a great ride with so many Monsters
feel free too (quote attach) your  numbers to the list

I'll definately still be in the "Happy to Chill" group for this ride.

For any other "slow coaches" out there who are not sure if they should join us... on the last OZMO group ride up Putty Road I had only been riding for 2 months and still on my L's; I definately did not feel like the pace was too fast, always had a riding buddy (Jukie) and the group waited at the major intersections, lunch and fuel stops.

On another note, on the weekend I bought a new summer Dainese Air-2 Jacket just for this ride!

ive had good sucess with the tues "knight riders" and thurs "sydney riders" groups. there is a vast variety of bikes and rider levels, even a bimota and a scooter last thurs alongside many regular japs and 3 ducatis!!  :o
both groups are very accomodating to anyone on two wheels, tues is prob a little harder riding group.

tues is departure from 7/11 servo in burwood at 730 if i remember correct. rain or shine.
thurs is from the shell servo on parramatta rd five dock 8pm. seems only on shiney days.

sorry bout the tangent. back to the caves ride :D

Betty it seems as this is your ride having started the thread ,
with so many riders maybe some structure before the ride on leaders and sweep
being allocated  may make it a little smoother on the day ?

Geez, its not 'my' ride ... you lot just need some prompting sometimes always seem to need prompting.

I don't mind sweeping the slow group as usual. Brian has nominated himself to do the same for the faster group. So all we need is some leaders ... seems everyone wants to ride mid-pack for some reason [roll] [cheeky]

I didn't want to nominate people so I am glad that you guys have done it. Seems close enough for a start ... well done.

Matty/Goldie,

I had a look at the map and it looks like the most direct route for me an MMick is Appin to Liverpool down the Hume then up Elizabeth Drive right at Walgrove Rd, quick run down the Gt Western Hwy then left at Reservoir Rd, Left at Sunnyholt then Left at Old Windsor Rd.

Man its an epic journey just to get to the meeting place.

Add you rego to an E-Tag and take the M7. Take Hume (Via Picton Rd?), M7, Exit Sunnyholt, Windsor Rd.
It would be well worth the couple of $

Jees Google has some interesting routing for you..
Noticed you're heading to Narwee Hotel for a beer before you get too far along.
And then you're taking a quick run down Victoria Rd and back to make sure you get the sides of your tires warmed up.

If there's no takers for Mecca I might come and meet up with you guys.
What time did you have planned Matty?

.. Worst case scenario I could just hit the tunnel(s) M2 combo.

Hey Wells , where's Meccas ?

Another option would to send of the slower riders first and rod620 the day before ;D
this would give the faster riders time for another latte and more chinwagin [coffee]

I don't like the idea of all that overtaking. If you are concentrating and somebody buzzes by at twice the speed when you are not expecting it it is rather unsettling. At the current rate of drop outs the multi-group philosophy may be irrelevant.

... and Rod, don't pay any attention to the big bully. I'll try and keep you company (in case Jukie prefers to play).

I can't believe some of this bad weather talk - a few scattered showers 19-25! Hardly bad weather...

Here's a newsflash - you're on a bike, and there's nothing between you and the heavens. If it rains, you might get wet ;) If you dress appropriately, no problems; cold and wet is not fun - just wet, well I can deal with it..

  [thumbsup] all ahead full steam
See you all at Maccas @ 8.30 ish unless on waking it is pissing down [puke]
We have some children to drop off early so don't leave without us if we are a little late.

I have suggested to Luba that we go ahead with the ride ,
if we get up in the Blue Mountains and it is really shitty
we will turn back.
As she is new to the monster and never ridden in the rain ,
plus a new unscrubed front tyre I don't want an un happy ending
or to push her if she is getting un comfortable.

Other than that we are excited and from what I can make of the synoptic map we are
going to be getting 80% chance of just cloudy with maybe a light random shower.

Yep.
Great day out heaps of  [leo] up Bells, the count was 4 that we saw.
No rain to speak of just some water run off across some parts of the road here and there.

Aside from the splinter at Oberon it was a great ride, hope those who followed out to Tarana got home okay.
Oh and wee little slip going into one of the last corners into Jenolan Caves. Woops...

Tarana was only a lunch option that didn't get used.
Glad you all got home fine.

Yep,that was a great ride, countryside was beautifull. So many Police around, did anyone get pinged ? To continue the country theme as long as possible I turned right at Richmond onto Castlereagh rd thru Penrith, then Mulgoa rd to Wallacia then Greendale rd (rougher than Tarana roads) then Bringelly rd and home. Better than the M7. cheers to all  [clap] who got the day happening.

Just arrived back home ... which made it a 12 hour day more for us.

We went through about 10mins of misty rain first thing (no-one else is this far north though) and then a couple of sprinkles at Bell on the way home. Hope everyone enjoyed the day.

Thanks to all those who attended and especially those that kept us all organised (I though we were always going back along Duck-thingymy road too - five fuel stops in a day is enough for me).

Luckily a certain someone was lucky enough to prevent two near drops at the Oberon servo ... that would have been embarrassing ... on a borrowed bike no less.

PS. Has anyone heard from Mick?

He was sitting on the side of the road on his "pat-malone"

To inform you all, no crash or mechanical problem. Just a little technical issue with the RTA and the booze bus three of us had the pleasure of visiting.

Got home around 630 and had clocked up 600ks. Man thats hard work on a superbike!

Thankfully the splinter group had someone who knew the turn off to Duck whatever rd   [popcorn]

Man I love that road! Did anyone cop a surprise when they hit the railroad tracks?

Copped some rain around Katoomba and had a fair amount of fog but all was good.

Had a great day out. Highlight of the year! [thumbsup]

close encounters with ducks( the winged varity) and a long neck turtle both making it home to
their familys .The spillway was cool and Luba did very very well .Thank,s for keeping an eye out for her Jukie [thumbsup]
Hopefully everyone made it home with all the skin, bling and demerit points they left with.

Great day out. Ended up being a good test of my new front end, some adjustments needed, but by the end of the day I was getting back to normal cornering confidence.

Road down to Jenolan was absolute shite!

Overall, it was a day filled with police, gravel and dirt on the road and potholes, yet also good friends, good times and lotsnof good riding.

Good to see some old faces, and good to meet a heap of newer ones

There's people out there who'd pay a lot of money to do that sorta shit  ;DThe road going down to the cave - the real tight twisties the fallen trees over the road , dodging big lumps of rock the water and the mud bits the turtle the rabbit the roo the giant grasshopper or whatever it was splattered all over my visor , giving it stick in second on the road after the caves and  the front end up, not to mention my new flashing stop light  :D and a great bunch of people.!! Hey Matty, i want your new jacket ! [thumbsup]

This video is evidence that I came first for at least one of the stages!

But seriously, great day again. Good to meet and talk to new people, and was cool to have another P plater around similar skill level for the ride.

At the end our group went via Lake Lyell and split again to go via Katoomba/Great Western Highway. We too got a little rain up in the highlands but as soon as we were on the M4 it was back to sunny, warm and muggy weather.

Hopefully we can get another OZMO ride in before the end of daylight savings next year.
Cheers, Rod

Actually I really enjoyed the Jenolan Caves Road, Matty and I had quite a good run, and I must say publicly that Matty has improved quite a bit since I last rode with him. I just sat on his arse and rode with him, the pace was'nt crazy but it was quickish.

Yes the police, when we got pulled over by the RBT and you do the blow in the bag, in this case count 1 to 5 and produce your licence, the copper said do you have another licence, of course I said no, why would I need another licence? He said that ones out of date.

Yep sure was, when I looked at it, it was 29 days overdue. I didnt recieve a renewal so I didnt renew it 'cos Iwas unaware that it had lapsed.
Anyway, he would'nt let me ride no more and I had to get my wife (she's a darlin) and one of my son's to ride my bike home.

Yeah I agree with you Nick, good to meet up with old and new people, an enjoyable day

Matty, I did appreciate the phone call this morning, things being sorted as we speak (write). Which reminds me, I must adjust the rear shock, its still set up for pillion passenger, a wee bit too stiff.

Dont worry about the foot dab thing, always better than getting on the gas too early and creating an highside, it happens to all of us (not the highside).

Sounds like a plan is forming:
Quote from: J5 on October 28, 2010, 10:33:09 PM
head up bells
across to mt vic
jenolan caves , amke broom broom noises through the cave drive
oberon , get fuel at the servo , mobil? end of town and pick up some ammunition there ;)
out to oconnell pub for a bite to eat
conitinue to tarana , maybe have lunch there ?
back past lake lyall ? which amazing is full of water again
into lithgow at the shell on gt western,
then back down bells and home

no dirt this way , you get dirt if you go to tarana from the middle of oberon instead of going out to oconnel

good day 350+

for an overnight , also head out to sofala , maybe a bathurst detour

and the map

Quote from: J5 on November 04, 2010, 01:31:17 AM
i stuck a map up here

http://www.motowhere.com/maps/route/richmond-oberon-tarana-richmond (http://www.motowhere.com/maps/route/richmond-oberon-tarana-richmond)

its 130k to oberon from richmond and prob a couple of hours  stop for fuel then about 20 mins out to oconnell pub for lunch

so about 3 hours i guess for round figures

been a while since i have done this one

we dont go down into jenolan caves as iirc there is dirt out the other side, besides the fact of tourist buses down there

either way great day, shame you guys missed the spillway in full swing

No, really!

Sorry, I guess that there was some 13 pages of banter before we left maps and plans got lost in the excitment of getting out for a group ride again.
I was running by this map/plan of coming back via duckmaloi road.

Anyways, we all had a great day and got back.

I also rely on the renewal notice, to know when its due, but its a trap for the unwary. recently my licence was suspended for 3 months due to loss of points and towards the end of that suspension I went to the RTA just to double check the the exact day I could start riding/driving again. Lucky I did because the lady there pointed out that my renewal date had come and gone, but they hadn't sent me a notice because of the suspension. Had I just started riding again, I could of been pinged for riding without a licence, last time that happened some years ago it cost me $700 and a further 6months suspension and that was the absolute minimum, could have been worse. . .  also what if one had a bad accident, hit a couple of cars or something, would insurance pay out ? I doubt it. RTA should of sent me a notice, notifying me that they weren't gonna send me a renewal notice !    cheers and good luck with it.

On rotation we should be due for a 'big group ride' the first Saturday in Feb.

Bound to be other random smaller rides posted up in the meantime.

I suspect that we will get through all the usual trips throughout the year on the "big rides" with frequent rides on the Old Road, probably the National Park and maybe even Macq Pass for the locals on more than one occasion.

Might be time to start thinking about that overnighter to Byalong Valley. I might start the 2011 ride thread in a couple of days unless someone beats me to it.
