Not sure if there's been a vacuum thread before or not. But I am thinking about coughing up a chunk of change for a Dyson DC-25 upright house vac. I had already been thinking about one (but hung up on spending the big $$$!!! [bang]) and then an out of town friend stopped by for a beer last week and the subject came up. He got the exact same vac recently and said it kicks ass. He has two dogs and at least two cats, meaning critter fur everywhere. We have one dog of unknown ancestry that weighs 65-70 lbs with 1-2" long white hair and that damn animal sheds as much as a kennel full of dogs!!
She's a lazy (but sweet) inside dog but we have never put the vacuums up since we got her almost three years ago. It's really incredible, in a bad way. We have personally doubled the profits of the Evercare pet hair roller company! And yes, we have talked to our vet about it. I walk her everyday and on those walks I am constantly brushing her every time she stops to sniff (every 5 feet!!) with a Furminator rake comb/brush thing. Now our whole neighborhood is blanketed in her fur!
So, we badly need a new and improved kick ass vac. We have to vacuum 4-5 times a week easy and our basic Eureka up right just can't cut it. The house is 2/3s dark hardwood with the bedrooms having berber carpet. Anyone with experience with the Dyson DC-25? I believe it's part of their "Animal" line of vacs and has the new groovy rolling "ball" feature for easy handling. What no Ohlins upgrade available?? ??? [laugh]
Any input would be greatly appreciated. I can't believe we are thinking about spending $450+ on a vac! But it will get used every day and has a 5 year warranty... plus no bags or belts.
Thanks! [thumbsup]
No FHE on Dyson stuff.
Seems to be the only Vacuum company thinking outside the box bag.
We had a dyson rolly ball one at the moto shop I worked at, works a treat got nothing bad to say about it...ball helped get under bikes in ways that would have been left if we just had a normal vacuum. Funny thing was when we got it, all the gearheads that worked there surrounded it fighting for who got to play with it/take it apart first. Go for it it'll only help your problem.
They work well. Got one years ago. For snicks I ran my 'old' vac around the carpets first, then with the new toy. I was shocked at how much stuff was picked up by the Dyson even after they had already been 'vacuumed'.
Yeah, they aren't cheep - the strat I took was to wait for a bed bath and beyond 20% off coupon to come and used that. But be aware, the coupon said that it can't be used on Dyson items... Mercifully for me the person running the register and the price system didn't seem to be aware of that exclusion [thumbsup]

The end that you put against the carpet/floor. [cheeky]
We have to Dyson DC 25 ball (the purple one), it kicks tail!! It does cost a pretty penny, so shop around and look for coupons online and whatnot, cost compare, it saved us $50 bucks off the sale price when we bought ours. The one thing about the DC 25 is that the canister is not as big as one of the other models, but if you keep an eye on it and dump it every couple of times you vacuum the whole house, then it isn't a problem. A nice feature of the canister on the DC 25 is that it opens on the bottom, so you just pop the canister off the vacuum, slip the end of it into your kitchen garbage bag, and hit the button . . . and all the vacuum crud slides right out the bottom. Then use the edge of the garbage can to pop the bottom closed again and snap it back onto the vacuum, and you're ready to go again.
The brush also slides out of the side of the vacuum really easily, just use a screwdriver or quarter to turn the lock 1/4 turn and slide it out. This is especially nice when you get a bunch of long hair or string wrapped around the brush.
I really suggest you get somebody who has been trained to sell the Dyson to show you all the features in the store. They send somebody around to Macys every 6 months to teach the staff how to sell the Dyson, get a demo in the store, and try it out. They might talk really fast, so make them show you anything you miss. ( I used to work at Macy's and snuck in for the training b/c I wanted to buy one eventually, which I did). Yes I am a bit biased, but honestly they are a really good vacuum, no mess, no fuss, easy to use. Basically . . . Yes they SUCK!!!!
Oh, and the ball requires a bit more wrist strength to control it b/c it doesn't track nicely like a regular vacuum, but you get used to that really fast, and thhen they are awesome.

I read a bunch of reviews on Dyson's website and others and while there were a few weak ass complaints damn near 98%+ were all positive. Dyson even left the few negative comments on their site which I thought was very sporting of them. [thumbsup] Several people had done the exact same thing: use the old vac then hit it again with the Dyson. Everyone was blown away at how much extra crap the Dyson got. :o
I've got one pinned down on overstock.com and it's an even $100 off the sticker price. I've checked out Target and other big box stores and overstock.com has them beat and it would probably save me sales tax too. ;D Just tough to pull the pin in this day and time on such an expensive appliance. But as I said we'll use the hell out of it.
Thanks for the replies. I'll wait and see if anyone posts about bad luck and what the problem was. But I have a feeling I won't see too many. Maybe tonight I'll have a couple of stiff drinks to kill the pain over the cost and just order it. [drink] [laugh]
Its pretty cool and all, but compared to a $200 shop vac. the shop vacs got WAY more power, but again, its an industrial use vac inside a regular house....
What i like about it.
1- design
2- very quiet
3- very efficient, and no bags, also easy to clear jams.
What i dont like about it
1- okay it never loses suction, true, but the suction isnt that powerful (Well im comparing it to my 3hp shop vac)
2- EXPENSIVE
3- not good for people who have really werid objects around hte house, i have a habbit of working in my room sometimes nad ive picked up a nail or an old Xacto and shit myself cause i thought it tore a hole in the vac hose, it never actually did, but doenst mean it wont.
We have a pre-ball Dyson. It rocks about as much as a vacuum is capable of rocking. [thumbsup]
We bought one and did the vacuum with the old one first thing. We have two cats and one dog. I could not believe how much more hair and dirt the Dyson picked up. Also, not having to change bags is great. Just pull the canister, hit the switch, and watch everything dump into the trash. After I was done with the initial Dyson cleaning, I swear it was easier to breathe in the house. [thumbsup]
i have one of the dirt devil bagless models, its is about 30-50% cheaper than dyson, not sure if its just as good but it works for me. the thing is that the dyson bagless technology is now used by everyone, so shop around.
for what its worth i wanted the dyson but couldn't swing the money so got something that was a little cheaper, it seems to work fine and has one of the open clear containers that you easily empty same as the dyson.
Yeah, this isn't that old of a house (built in 1969... like my wife! [laugh]) but it is really dusty and it's just me & wifey, a 14 year old kiddo and the dog. It's not like were are opening the outside doors every 5 minutes. I lived in a 55+ year old drafty rent house not a mile away before we got married and bought this place and it was much less dusty. Huh??
Dallas-Ft. Worth is awful for allergies and as I have gotten older they give me hell. I'm thinking that would be a nice side benefit to the Dyson. Cleaner floors equals less dust stomped up as we walk around so less dust in the air and on top of everything. Like the dog hair, you dust a table and the very next day you can see dust building up on it. Vac up her hair, 30 minutes later you're saying "damn, didn't I just vacuum that spot?"
He Man, I'm already using a Shop Vac inside the house along with the Eureka upright. It's a little Shop Vac All Around, a 2hp, 1.5 gallon unit. And I use the Shop Vac bags in it. I have a big 3hp, 6 gallon wet-dry Shop Vac in the garage but it's too damn big for the house. I bought the little Shop Vac for all the hardwood floors and to get up under furniture. Works great for that but is a no go for carpeting. I think the mega buck Dyson would kick the Eureka's butt and it would be a win-win in conjunction with the mini Shop Vac in a supporting role. ;D
I'm liking that canister dump idea too. OK, I'm getting kinda drunk tonight and ordering off overstock.com. [drink] At least I'll have some fun spending that much money... I guess that's also what you say right before you rent a hooker!! [laugh]
We got a refurb from woot.com for $250
good deal and works well
We just bought a new upright. I couldn't justify the extra $$ after trying several models out at sears. I also looked at consumer reports, and the one we ended up with was ranked the highest in the bagless upright category (yes, even against the $500+ competition). The only downside they listed is that hoovers have a greater number of repairs on average than most brands...
http://www.amazon.com/Hoover-UH70210-WindTunnel-Bagless-Upright/dp/B002RR9Y92 (http://www.amazon.com/Hoover-UH70210-WindTunnel-Bagless-Upright/dp/B002RR9Y92)
It uses the same cyclonic bagless method as the dyson I think.
So far it seems pretty good. Like most things online, you can find a lot of positive and negative reviews on just about every vacuum sold.

Have had it for several years. What it picks up every week astonishes me (and freaks me out).
I got the Wife a Dyson vacuum for Christmas. yah yah yah, that's what they tell you NOT to get your wife for Christmas. But that's what she wanted and she LOVES it!
Our old vac is 8 years old. My wife has to vacuum 2 or 3 times over the same spot just to "clean" it. Not to mention it struggles with picking up dog fur from our Beagle and Shiba. It's just a chore. With the new vac, it picked up so much crap from the carpet that was just vaccumed with our old vac. It's well balanced that it's almost effortless to move around. It's easy to empty the dirt. Everything is just that much easier. My wife absolutely LOVES it.
She recently said to me now she understands why I love Ducati that much. She said she now has the Ducati of vacuums! LOL [laugh]
Put a Ducati Performance or Corse sticker on it and call it even! [laugh] My wife was at a friend's house today dealing with little kids and when I told her over the phone about the DMF replies and the other comments I've seen on line she chimes in and tells me how her friend has the same Dyson DC-25 and I could hear her friend chattering away in the background about it. She and her husband have about 6 cats and I know their house is a little IZ_ and she has two little kids. She loves the Dyson and was yelling in the background to get one.
Need to check the Termi website and see if there is a Ti or carbon slip on can for it! ;D [beer] The money issue just gets to me but I guess it needs to be viewed as just another expensive household appliance. I paid big bucks for a stainless side by side KitchenAid 'frig and I swear two days after the warranty ran out the ice maker died. [bang] We don't use that much ice so I bought old school ice trays from Target and they work just fine. [thumbsup]
I clean offices for a living and I prefer Simplicity brand over anything else. One of the few that is made in USA.
ANY new vacuum will perform better than an unmaintained one. If you are dead set on dropping the ching on the Dyson then go for it...
HOWEVER - a little time spent taking apart your old vac and cleaning the passages, as well as a new brushroll and belt will do wonders for the suction. Check the impeller too. If it has any cracks it will cause the machine to vibrate and be very noisy. Worn impeller also decreases suction.
In summary a ~ $50 overhaul will have the old vac like new and leave some cash for more bike mods. [thumbsup]
I can appreciate that advice. [thumbsup] I recently replaced the brush on the Eureka upright, keep fresh belts on hand and regularly change them, clean the foam inner filter with ever bag change, blow everything out with compressed air in the garage and use 3M Filtrete bags. Other than adding nitros and a big bore kit I think the vac I have is doing all it can do. The dog hair just seems to magically "weave" it's way in the rugs, carpet, the furniture she brushes up against to say nothing about what ends up on our clothes. And the current vac just can't pick it all up. I run it over and over and over the same spot just to get 90% of it up. And that's with a fresh bag and roller brush so it's doing the best it can do. The hardwoods aren't the problem it's the rest of the house. [bang]
Dyson all the way - get the less 20% coupon out from Bed Bath and a Blond and you're set.
+1 on the Ducati sticker
The Dyson has been the ONLY household appliance I've ever had that has lived up to the hype. Period.
And I have yet to "maintain" it in any way outside of regularly emptying the canister and freeing the rotating brush of hair a couple of times per year.
Come on guys I don't want to seem old fashioned (I am)..[bang] but vacuum cleaners.. ??? ;) ;)

I was a professional housekeeper for a while and have never used a dyson. I used a Meile swivel upright .Yes it has a bag .What I can tell you about the meile is this It has a seperate motor for the brush. The brush roller runs on a toothed belt ljust like Ducati Cams do on later model engines. It gets under everything. It will suck start a space shuttle. my employers had pets......4 cats and six dogs. There was animal hair everywhere. Given the choice I would use nothing else. Its an option you might want to explore. The cost of them has now come down to that of a dyson but they used to be in the almost a thousand dollar range......They come with a 39ft cord as well so room to room is not an issue. They are very powerful. So from a professional housekeepers point of view, these rock. Most folks only have the cheap vacuums that are very mediocre and that is all they need but when you have 10 shedding animals, dirt from a farm and employees being traipsed everywhere and then dust from woodstoves etc, the machine they had kept their home with my help spick and span. Meile all the way.Its money you will not regret spending. Why buy a new Yugo when you can buy a good used Mercedes for the same money?

[laugh] I would put Ducati Corse stickers on a lot of things in the house but I know better. Once I leave the garage, I know I am on somebody else's turf.
Know that feeling all too well. Recently had a newly framed Duc print (the Decade of Domination/WSBK print I posted about before) leaning up against a wall in the house. Just sitting there, doing nothing. And the wife's spidey senses kicked in and in a nano second she was there, I don't think her feet even touched the ground! [laugh] Pointing at the offending framed motorcycle goodness she asked "what's that doing in here?" Before I could answer that it was headed for the garage and I had set it down because my hands were full she stated "that's not going on any wall in here!" I think she's still mad about the time I pulled all our wedding pics out of their frames around the house and replaced them pictures of scooters I cut out of Cycle World and Motorcyclist. It was just a joke... well, at least I thought it was funny. ;D Guess not. :P

It's the only other vac I would recommend over Simplicity.
Like BGB said it's the Mercedes of vacs.

[laugh] That's hilarious! However, I can see how that wouldn't go over very well.
I kind of like the Dyson, my Dad has one, but my wife is married to her Kirby. It seems to work OK. The only thing I don't really like about it is that it's heavy, heavy like a tank. That's because its made of die cast aluminum. It was well used when we got married about 10 years ago and it's still going strong. I recently bought her a G5 Model because I found one on craigslist for cheap. her old one cost like $700 or something. I found the one on CL for $175. It's newer but she still mostly uses the old one. Both of them have shampoo attachments that work pretty good.
If the Miele is the Mercedes of Vacuums. The Kirby is like the Old 30 year old Mercedes sedans you still see driving around. The ones with the heavy duty door hinges, and that old school solid feel that just keep running.
I like the inventiveness of the Dyson, but not all the plastic, although the plastic makes it light.
Hard to find much these days made like that. "Built like a tank" aren't words used very often any more. That vac will probably last another ten years. Easy. People like light weight stuff so using plastic makes them happy and saves the manufacturer money. Guess a titanium and carbon fiber vac is out of the question. ;D

Titanium would be good, but the carbon fiber is not so good for banging into stuff.
Dyson ROCKS!!! Have had it since 2004 with no problems. [thumbsup]
WE got one last year for my wife's wedding shower. Its the non ball animal one. I have a 110lb Golden that if you don't keep up with him the hair is like tumbleweeds. The best attachment is the small beater brush to clean pet hair. You just have to remember to wash out the filter and canister every once in a while. I don't know how we lived with out it.

+2. I actually prefer this to the ball, but I've had the animal since '05 and haven't done anything, but empty and rinse filter. Never having to do anything cost wise for it is awesome. So if cost is an issue, you could look at a DC-14 animal. I also have the portable one which rocks.
Can't beat the Dyson Animal if you have pets. Shortly after getting my Lab I realized my old Eureka was going to cost me a lot in bags I had to get a canister vacc. The price was a bit tough to take, but once I got it home and did the floors all the buyer's remorse went away.

Reviving this old Dyson thread - we have two cats that between eating and pooping, shedding is their other most favorite thing to do and I REALLY want a Dyson. With temps rising rapidly in Phoenix they are in major shed mode. Thing is, I don't know which model I want. I didn't realize there were so many until I started looking into them. DC this one or DC that one ... which one do I want? Help please?
I am sorry to say I still haven't made the jump and bought one. Given the current finances it's just difficult to look at myself in the mirror knowing I spent that much on a vacuum. Yeah, I know they kick ass but... [bang] Your post about the shedding does strike a nerve though. Our pooch (aka: fur monster!) will soon be loosing her winter coat too and the fur on the floor factor will sky rocket. It may be worth skipping a mortgage payment and getting the Dyson!! [laugh]
I'm thinking the DC-25 would be the one you want. Not much difference between your cat fur problem and my fur monster dilemma.

ok, so im totally not the home shopping kind of person.. but for a dyson i make an exception.. so hsn.com is helpful because they give full descriptions & they have reviews from people that have bought each of the vacuums annnd you can do flex payments to your credit card instead of paying $500 all in one shot..

That's the thing I am debating with myself - do I really need to spend $500 for the DC25 vacuum? Or would a less expensive model be sufficient for the job? There are 25 different Dyson models from DC11 to DC35, and cover every price point in between. Does anyone have shedding house cats and a smaller/less expensive Dyson than the DC25 they would recommend for the job?
We have the one sold at Costco...when we bought it. Still, it looks similar to the DC17 they sell now. No cats, but 2 dogs and it works very well. [thumbsup]
we have had our dc-25 for a few years and it's still wonderful. Totally worth the $500.
I had been kicking the idea of getting one for a few months now, and just bit the bullet. Macy's is running a special on the DC25 Animal; it's listed at $439.99 on their website.
http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=340369&CategoryID=23481#fn=sp%3D1%26spc%3D96 (http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=340369&CategoryID=23481#fn=sp%3D1%26spc%3D96)
So I go down there, knowing that they will usually offer a discount on initial purchases if you open up a line of credit with them. I get there, they have two left and both of them are marked at $399. Couple that with the 15% discount for getting a store card, and I'm SOLD!!
Now I've just got to get it out of the box and start hoovering...
Consumer reports recently did an article comparing vacuums and the gist of it was you really do get what you pay for with the DC-28 winning all tests and the DC-25 coming in second over other makes and models.

That's what I've heard and what's been posted on this thread. Lot's of folks vacuum a room or area with what they have and then hit again with the Dyson once they get it home and whamoo... tons of shit in the canister that the other vac didn't get! Can't wait to pull that home test myself. I just need to get over it (the $$$ part) and bite the bullit. Screw the other bills. Don't see the fur monster not shedding any time soon and I need all the help I can get. ;)

So I'm going to do some checking tomorrow and see what I can find, but she's really excited to get one. By this weekend we'll be chasing the cats around with a Dyson trying to suck the hair off them before it ever reaches the furniture!!! [cheeky]

Love the Dyson we have! I can't remember what model it is? It looks like the DC 33 from the website but with more yellow. Anyway, that things works great! The only complaint..I with the smaller, lighter roller ball model would've come out sooner because it's a pain using it on the stairs.

It's also easier to get it in and out of that small circular door at Bag End.

OK..haha f*cker! >:( You were at my place though and there were no circular doors. [cheeky]
There is no difference in suction power between the different models of Dyson, they all have very similar suction power.
The only difference between them is the size, shape and accessories configuration.
I used to sell Dyson's and I spoke to a service Tech who came up to do some training, he said the suction power is set at a particular throughput to make the cyclonic action work in all stages of the Cyclonic cleaning.
A lot of people used to want to know the power draw and assumed that bigger power draw meant more suction power, but as he explained different canister designs needed different motor power. so comparing by the amount of power it draws told you nothing.
I have the slim upright Dyson DC18 and it has been the best Vacuum we have ever owned, it truly sucks!
But if you look at all the different models you will see they only have different parts and configurations like motorized heads, HEPA filters and various other attachments, also if it is a Ball model or not.
The service Tech also said the biggest problem they used to see was people not cleaning the Air Filter often enough, he used to recommend halving the suggested 6 months, so clean it every 3 months.
Thanks! Good info filled post!! [thumbsup]

Thanks for the reminder. I have the DC25 Animal. The sticker for the filter says to clean every 3 months.
OK, I started this thread months ago and have still never bought the DC25 Animal/ball... but I am tomorrow! [thumbsup] Home Depot has them for $398 on special and that's good enough for me. I helped the wife clean house for an all gal party on Friday night and by looking at all the white dog hair on the floors, carpet and furniture you would think we haven't vacuumed in weeks! [bang] >:( I've had enough. It's Dyson time! [laugh]
OK, it's finally done. DC-25 Animal Ball in the house! ;D Went to my local Home Depot and told them I wanted that vac for the special $399 (I thought it was $398) I saw on line. Had a super nice gal that helped me but their sales signs said $438. I told her I thought I saw $398/399 on line but maybe I was wrong. She showed me her monitor that said it was $438. I offered to go home and pull up what I thought I saw and print it out and that I very easily could have screwed up and been wrong. I certainly believed what she was showing me on her screen. I live a mile away and had no problem with checking it out on my own and returning later. Much to my surprise she whips out a calculator and punches in some numbers and says "Hey, no biggie, I'll sell you that vac for $399. I have to power to do that!" Wow! I told her I have no problem being wrong and she didn't have to do that. I'm willing to pay the right price. But she insisted and said she wanted me to go home a happy customer. Again, wow. I took the deal but will make it a point to go back tomorrow and tell her supervisor how nice and professional she was. Damn, don't see that kind of customer service very often anymore! Most people don't give a shit if you ever come back... happy or not.
Anyway, yeah the vac kicks butt! [thumbsup] One or two passes over our worst dog haired rug and it was totally clean. I would make 10-12 passes with the Eureka and there would always still be hair. Even when serviced with a fresh bag. Hell, I would have to get on hands and knees and hand pick it out of the rug! [bang] Our dog has white hair. The hair in the canister was brown... pushing blackish! [puke] Shows you how much extra dirt it was picking on top of the dog hair.
And I did the typical test. Vacuum a room with the Eureka and then hit it with the DC-25 and holy shit! Half a canister of extra dog hair and dirt! Showed it to my wife and she told me that she was actually glad we spent the bucks on the Dyson. Always good to keep the spousal unit happy. ;D
End of happy vac story. [beer] Over and out. ;D
To this day, years later, it still astounds/disgusts me how much crud the Dyson picks up every week.
if anyone else is interested in one, www.woot.com (//http://) has it on sale today for 299.99... refurbished though
I stopped by the same Home Depot today where I bought the Dyson. I hunted down the manager to tell him how great the sales associate was that cut me the really nice deal on the vac. He wasn't surprised. She was the employee of the month! [clap] I wasn't surprised either. I told him he needs to clone her and he said he wished he could. [laugh]
Funny. Having such a kick ass vac has made me want to vacuum even more. ;D More kitchen points earned from the wifely unit! [thumbsup]

kudos to you though, for vacuuming in the first place
my husband doesn't even know where we keep our's [laugh]
My wife doesn't either. Although the vacs haven't been put away since the fur monster came to live with us.
My loving wife dropped a bombshell on me when I came home from the hospital four years ago after breaking my neck. She asked what did I use to clean the toilets and where did I keep it!!! [bang] I said "Holy shit! We've been married since 2005 and you have never cleaned a toilet??!!" [laugh] And the answer was yes. [roll] I am the designated vacuumer, dish washer and general house cleaner. Hey! I do a kick ass job! [thumbsup] OK, y'all stop laughing at me!! >:( [laugh]

The Dyson I have (DC07) is great but on the stairs, it's bulky and hard to move around. Plus, it kinks in the hose because of the incedible sucking power. :p how does that roller ball model do on the stairs?

Doesn't it have an attachment for the end of the hose to make stairs easy? You shouldn't be using the whole unit for each stair. ???
No stairs in my house. The one thing I am not crazy about with the Dyson is the removeable "wand". But I probably won't ever use it and didn't buy it for that feature. We have the mini All Around Shop Vac for that kind of detail "wand" work.
You know, it's kinda sad in a way that I could get a five page thread on a Ducati forum about damn vacuum cleaners. [laugh] [laugh] [laugh]
The handle pulls out and that's the part used for stairs. It still kinks though when you leave the base at the top or bottom of the stairs.
This week I have been using a DC 07 Animal at my Dad's house
(http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31BY005G2CL.jpg)
As you may know I own a Kirby. (Actually three of them now. Don't ask it just sort of happened) One of them is 15 years old and still works fine.
In comparing the two. The Dyson is easier to clean out with the canister and all. The Kirby uses a Bag, which is a little more difficult to change, but not too hard.
I like the feature on the Dyson where you pull the handle out and it becomes a flexible hose for sucking things up.
The Kirby requires a shutdown, removing the carpet attachment off the front, and attaching the hose. Definitely more complicated.
The Dyson is most certainly lighter, while the Kirby is a heavy tank when you have to pick it up and carry it someplace. However If you grab the Kirby down near the base on the built in Handle, Carrying it someplace becomes much easier.
In use, The Kirby has Power driven wheels, sort of like a lawn mower that makes vacuuming a breeze. Under its own power it feels light as a feather. It takes slightly less effort then the Dyson to vacuum the carpet. I read that the main reason for the power driven wheels was not so much because of the extra weight of the vacuum, but that the thing really sucks down on the carpet and makes a seal so the power wheels really help in this regard. A couple of weeks ago I was using one of the new ones I acquired and the power was off on the wheels. It was kind of wearing me out before I realized that the switch was in the off position.
The Kirby has a light on the front so I can see in dark corners. The Dyson has no light. Its not a big deal most of the time, but My bedroom is Dark when I have the shades closed. So I like that light.
The Kirby also has a Shampoo attachment which does a pretty good job. Probably not as good as a dedicated carpet shampooer but it gets the job done. Again this feature requires removing the carpet attachment, and the Bag, and attaching some shampoo parts. It takes a couple of minutes to do this once you get the procedure down.
I don't know if the Dyson has anything like this or not.
The Dyson is much quieter than the Kirby. The Kirby is a bit more quiet than the shop vac. In turn the shop vac is more quiet than the chain saw. I think to myself that I should be wearing earplugs when I run the chainsaw...I feel that I don't need earplugs when using any of the vacuum cleaners
For straight up carpet vacuuming though, I would say that the Kirby does it a bit better than the DC07 Animal. The Dyson is not bad, its just not as good as either the G4, G6 or G2000 Kirbys that I have around the house.

my 07 Animal came with a 'mini-turbine' head attachment

Air powered rotor brush that I use on the stairs, couch, to threaten the cat - all that awkward stuff.
After 8 years of solid use I've got a set of replacement parts coming. The latch on the bottom of the bin broke a while back, so I got a new canister. Then I looked more, and found that the filter on the side needed help. The foam bit you can wash was fine, but the yellow plastic bit with (what was) the whiteish element had pushed past it's limits. And I got a new HEPA filter (it's hidden in the guts) as well. I'm ready to see my vac back to FULL POWAH!
Yep, I'm still loving mine! I've moved past the buy in expense concerns. What's done is done. Even talked my brother in law into getting a DC25 Animal ball vac. He's got two cats that he thinks shed a lot of fur. [roll] My dog sheds more in an hour than those cats shed in a month... combined. [bang]
My DC14 animal is still going strong with having two huskies. Zero cost to keep thus far, I don't like the feel of the ball though.
That's what she said. [laugh]
My new filters arrived. I knew the pre motor filter was dirty, but when you see it next to a new one... ick.
Speaking of ick. I replaced the lifetime HEPA post moto filter. Man, the layer of the element that first filtered the air was BLACK. Not shocking as it's 8 years old, dealt with a big dog and some home renovation.. But ick. I don't know what they think of as the lifetime - but if you own one as old as mine - I'd recommend looking into some new filters.

Wait until Macy's has a sale on them, then go open up a Macy's card to buy it. You'll get 15% off of whatever the reduced price of the sale is. That's how I got mine. Ended up paying something like $340 for the DC25 Animal on the ball.
$340 is a good price for that vac. [thumbsup] It's about $550 straight up retail. Still loving mine and still loving the goodness that Home Depot gave me. Ran into the sales assoc. that sold me mine for a reduced price on a recent HD run. Wanted to make sure the manager told her that I came by to tell him how awesome she was. He did. [thumbsup] She laughed when I told her that he wanted to clone her. [laugh]
I noticed a Bed, Bath & Beyond 20% off mailer we got had a big stamp on it saying Dyson vacs were exempt. I remember some earlier posts saying that some folks had snuck that discount through and the sales assoc. and the BB&B computer didn't pick up on it. ;)
My local Costco has a Dyson upright Animal-whatever for $399. Thinking about picking one up.

I just went and looked at ours. One that expired in August didn't say anything about Dysons but the new one with a 10-24-11 deadline date clearly has "Also excludes Dyson vacuums and Miele" printed on it. There is a whole disclaimer list of exclusions printed at the bottom but the Dyson/Miele exclusion is free standing all by itself. Hey, if yours has a valid date and does not mention Dyson then check the price with the discount against other stores and if it's good to go then buy it at BB&B. They shouldn't have a leg to stand on if it's not mentioned on the valid discount coupon. [thumbsup]
Thinking of getting a handheld.. only carpet is on the 2 staircases.. http://www.abt.com/mobile/product_details.php?product_id=51713 (http://www.abt.com/mobile/product_details.php?product_id=51713)

I had a coupon that said it excluded dyson... they still took it at the register and I didn't say a word about it.
[thumbsup] [beer]
I bought ours a few years ago at BB&B, I didn't even have a coupon but the cashier dug one out for me to use. [thumbsup]
We have the animal model, no rolling ball, still going great after 5 years. I'm always amazed at how much it picks up every time. It's a little frightening, really.
You do have to be proactive about cleaning it out. If you let it get overly full it will start blowing dust in the air right at you. Yes we discovered this the hard way, I am super allergic and when M was a newborn sometimes running the vacuum cleaner was the only thing that would calm him (was much better after we recorded it to MP3). Anyway, MrI dumps out the canister and then quickly blows dust out of the filters with an air compressor, far away from me.
ours is about 5 years old too... i was wondering the same thing
i will try blasting the filters out with the air compressor... sounds like a great idea
this vac is truly amazing, and i've only cleaned the filters once :-\
i do empty the canister every time i use it though
If you want to get invasive...
Replace the filters - (I'm assuming DC07) model. The on the side, the pre-motor filter, is easy and isn't meant to last forever. It can be washed, but if you've only done it once in 5 years... a new on might be best.
There's a 'life-time' HEPA filter, the post-moto, filter that sits under the canisters base, It's not so easy to get at but there's videos on youtube that show you.
Pull out all the bits. There's a number of connections that are designed to be removed. Do so, blast 'em out with air and wipe down their seals with a damp cloth.
The bin can be removed from the cyclone assembly. Remove it and then you can blast the fins and grill with air as well. If you really want to go for it, you'll need a small Torx bit, but you can have the top off the cyclone and hit that with air too. Stuff gets stuck to it over time as well.
I dump my canister in the outside trash bin. On the way back from the alley I blow out the canister with the handy leaf blower in the garage. I believe an earlier post said to make sure you change/clean the filters every 3 months. Haven't had mine that long yet but I will try and stay on that schedule.
I have the Bissle knockoff of the Dyson. It worked well for a while, then broke. I spent a ton of cash getting it fixed and it broke again. I'm replacing it with a Dyson!
I am getting ready to spend my credit card points on a decent vacuum as I am tired of being covered by a Himalayan cat hair.
Is there a HUGE difference between the animal model and the others ? Trying to figure out which one to go for.

iirc, the animal comes w/ a slightly larger canister, a mini-turbine head attachment, and has slightly more "suction power."

The mini turbine attachment is great for removing pet hair from furniture.
To the OP. After you get the Dyson, vacuum your house with the old vacuum, then follow up with the Dyson. You will trip out on how much dirt/hair/dust your old vacuum missed.

Mine (DC07) is around 10 years old and is about to get retired. It ate a clutch last fall and after replacing it it isn't quite the same but still working. now the new clutch is starting to act up so we are looking to get a new one.
With 2 bulldogges and 2 long haired cats on wool carpets, the hair is non stop but it handled it.

there used to be a 10% off coupon in the movers kits at the post office, but i think they may only deliver these by snail mail if you actually change your address now.
Once I get the gift card, I can't risk bed bath & beyond refusing me as the gift card is targeted to a single store. I have that coupon and does state dyson is not applicable for discount. :-(.
Wish I could find for lowe's or hone depot.
Craigslist or ebay.. found mine, dc23, for 200$ from lady on water st. Works perfect..
Finally made the purchase today - dc41 animal. Thanks to credit card reward points but still $640 with tax is freakin expensive for a vacuum. It was either to get rid of the cat or get this (ha ha I joke)
Very light. Seems to pick up good so far (too early to tell). Not as loud as I thought it would be. Shitty assembly instructions.
Area rug is impossible to vacuum - too powerful
Having hard time using the extension for some reason.
Doesn't have the spinning brush fir carpet? Helps with not sucking it off the fl..
Damn at Tht price. Shld have went craigslist
I don't see any thing to adjust for type of carpet thickness. But I have a big area rug and it's impossible to vacuum that. I think it adjusts by itself? I will have to recheck.
Yes, I can't believe I spent they much albeit it was all credit card reward points but still. I got tired of eating hymalyan cat hair with my meal.
We have a new Animal in the house!!
Can't wait to try it out.
You will love it! [thumbsup] It's amazing the amount of nasty grunge that gets picked up in the canister.
Do the classis Dyson test. Vacuum a heavily traveled room with the old vac then hit it again with the Dyson. You will be amazed what gets left behind by the old vac.
