I bought ours a few years ago at BB&B, I didn't even have a coupon but the cashier dug one out for me to use. [thumbsup]

We have the animal model,  no rolling ball, still going great after 5 years.  I'm always amazed at how much it picks up every time.  It's a little frightening, really.

You do have to be proactive about cleaning it out.  If you let it get overly full it will start blowing dust in the air right at you.  Yes we discovered this the hard way, I am super allergic and when M was a newborn sometimes running the vacuum cleaner was the only thing that would calm him (was much better after we recorded it to MP3).  Anyway, MrI dumps out the canister and then quickly blows dust out of the filters with an air compressor, far away from me.

ours is about 5 years old too... i was wondering the same thing
i will try blasting the filters out with the air compressor... sounds like a great idea
this vac is truly amazing, and i've only cleaned the filters once  :-\

i do empty the canister every time i use it though

If you want to get invasive...

Replace the filters - (I'm assuming DC07) model. The on the side, the pre-motor filter, is easy and isn't meant to last forever. It can be washed, but if you've only done it once in 5 years... a new on might be best.

There's a 'life-time' HEPA filter, the post-moto, filter that sits under the canisters base, It's not so easy to get at but there's videos on youtube that show you.

Pull out all the bits. There's a number of connections that are designed to be removed. Do so, blast 'em out with air and wipe down their seals with a damp cloth.

The bin can be removed from the cyclone assembly. Remove it and then you can blast the fins and grill with air as well. If you really want to go for it, you'll need a small Torx bit, but you can have the top off the cyclone and hit that with air too. Stuff gets stuck to it over time as well.

I dump my canister in the outside trash bin. On the way back from the alley I blow out the canister with the handy leaf blower in the garage. I believe an earlier post said to make sure you change/clean the filters every 3 months. Haven't had mine that long yet but I will try and stay on that schedule.

I have the Bissle knockoff of the Dyson. It worked well for a while, then broke. I spent a ton of cash getting it fixed and it broke again. I'm replacing it with a Dyson!

I am getting ready to spend my credit card points on a decent vacuum as I am tired of being covered by a Himalayan cat hair.

Is there a HUGE difference between the animal model and the others ?  Trying to figure out which one to go for.

iirc, the animal comes w/ a slightly larger canister, a mini-turbine head attachment, and has slightly more "suction power."

The mini turbine attachment is great for removing pet hair from furniture.

To the OP. After you get the Dyson, vacuum your house with the old vacuum, then follow up with the Dyson. You will trip out on how much dirt/hair/dust your old vacuum missed.

Yep.

And I remain, years later, amazed/disgusted at what ours pulls up every week.  :P

Mine (DC07) is around 10 years old and is about to get retired. It ate a clutch last fall and after replacing it it isn't quite the same but still working. now the new clutch is starting to act up so we are looking to get a new one.

With 2 bulldogges and 2 long haired cats on wool carpets, the hair is non stop but it handled it.

Trying to find coupon for home depot or Lowe but not having any luck.  I won't sign up for credit card to get discount.  If I find one, here I come animal dysun.  Any info on how to find coupon is appreciated.  (I hate best buy n don't plan to purchase from there)

sign up for the bed bath and beyond newsletter/whatever and they'll email you a 20% off coupon.

there used to be a 10% off coupon in the movers kits at the post office, but i think they may only deliver these by snail mail if you actually change your address now.

Once I get the gift card, I can't risk bed bath & beyond refusing me as the gift card is targeted to a single store.  I have that coupon and does state dyson is not applicable for discount.  :-(.

Wish I could find for lowe's or hone depot.
