Question:
What is your opinion of the new 696?
Option 1: It looks like a silly child's toy...
Option 2: It has no soul...
Option 3: It makes me wanna puke...
Option 4: I prefer the previous generation...
Option 5: I actually like it!
Option 6: Boobies!
Option 7: I vote we lock this thread just before The Ron's current ban ends. ;-)
Here ya' go! Let the bashing begin! ;D
Inspired by 'The Ron' [evil]
I actually like it quite a bit, and hopefully will be able to get a Dark one soon.
Also, boobies. [thumbsup]
i think it looks great. i just wish it had some more umf to it, power wise.
I'm predicting boobies by a landslide.
B/c this topic was beaten to death when the 696 was released.
(But don't get me wrong, I still don't like the way it looks.)
I also think it looks good, much better in person. [thumbsup] There are a few things I'd change but that's been the way with every bike i've ever owned.
I like it. [thumbsup]
and i'm going to post so eight hundred times in this thread alone, just because you shouldn't have somewhere to go to complain about something so pretty. [beer]
you're right "the ron" that is fun. or not.
I own it and love it. If you dont like it, mod it up.
I was skeptical but it started to grow on me and looks great in person.
However I do prefer the older version better.
If I listed all the reasons I don't like it. It would look almost exactly like the reasons I don't like the 695. Give it an 1100 with a SSS and a few CF bits and we'll all be drooling over it. Especially once someone mods it up.
I have a feeling that a black 1100 (once available) with ducati duals all decked out like Icon or Asado's bikes with black bits on it will look just as cool as they do now. Hell, give Celli a 696 and I'll be shitting myself for sure.
Point is I don't like ANY monster in it's stock form 100%.
Sorry if this is a bashing thread and I am wrecking the fun.
Is this the OFFICIAL 696 bashing thread or just a regular 696 bashing thread? I don't like the headlight or the aluminum subframe. The headlight is *relatively* easy to fix - the frame, well that requires too much cutting and welding. Maybe get a 695 and transplant a 696 engine into it - that might be the easier way to fix it.
I've got to agree with others, I hated it when it came out, But it has grown on me, But I would be Modding the thing like crazy If I ever bought one, Some how, get rid of those rear peg carriers, Machine em or something.
Remove the plastic Bib above the Horz cylinder (I notice a board member has already)
And I don't know why, but I don't like the Horz Cylinders drooppy exhaust, I think I would have that remade to be a tighter rotation/Diameter.
And here's hoping a SSS for the higher power Models.
Oh, and I voted "BOOBIES" Is there anything they can't do?!?!
[thumbsup] [thumbsup] [thumbsup] For the new 696.
Thanks Ducati for making a perfect bike for me to ride! ;D Love it
Every time someone mentions "soul" or "passion" in a Ducati, I think of this TopGear review of the Alfa 159.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBMIwStDxYM
Truth is, if a Ducati (or any bike) invokes a passionate response it has pretty much accomplished its' task. Remember, that can be a positive or regative response. Either way you noticed it, and better yet you're now thinking and talking about it. I think the 999 was a premier example of this. Most people to this day still hate the styling, but they havne't forgotten about it have they? [laugh]
I love the styling of the 696, and the monster was long overdue for an update. If you like the original, you can go buy one any day of the week. I just think it is kinda ironic that they have to spell out the word "monster" on the tank of the 696. I mean, shouldn't that be pretty obvious?
Love mine! ;D ;D ;D

This is a 696 BASHING thread - for positive comments there is an official APPRECIATION thread - lol

I love it and it looks great! The only think I don't like is not being able to see the engine. Is it possible to remove the charcoal canister and shroud to reveal the horizontal cyl more? [edit] I mean I hate it, it sucks and you are a bad person for buying it [/edit] [laugh] Sorry, forgot this was bashing thread.
Nice garage BTW!! [moto]

Wow! this 696 bashing thread became an 696 APPRECIATION thread. :)
That just tell us all something. A Ducati no matter what model or year is a Ducati. Love em! ;
Enjoy your Duc!!
give it a make the beast with two backsin' rest already. Like it or not, it's here to stay so get used to it or STFU and ride what you like.
I actually don't mind your bike at all, the view from THAT side is much more tolerable and the Termis are a HUGE improvement.

It's this side that I think looks all wrong and I think the stock pipes are pretty strange looking. [roll]

The good: I really like it. The looks, while a bit hard to get used to at first, have grown on me to the point where I think it's pretty f'in cool.
The Bad: I don't consider it a Monster. It's just too... different from the 'original'
The Ugly: I don't consider liquid cooled, naked Ducatis to be Monsters either ;D
Nice the way the poll has 5 negative responces and one simple I actually like it....biased much?

I like it, just wish they'd get the overheating and fueling issues resolved for ALL the 696s,
BTW> Is it my imagination or is the 696 significantly shorter than other monsters, certainly looks it.
Curious about the claimed 355 pound dry weight too, don't see how it can be.
Chris
I prefer the older models before this one but...i do like it. :)
A couple of things:
I liked the Monster pre-ST2 frame better. I don't think 4V's are the best engine for a Monster. (but I like the S4Rs engine strangely enough now)
What most people don't realize is that this is the first time in the design iteration where the Monster is a "complete design" that is all its own. It has a frame created solely for it. (Remember first Monster is modified 851 derivative and last series was modified ST2-based) Swingarm is its own. Bodywork and packaging is it's own. This is essentially the first "clean sheet" design EVER of the Monster. Miguel Galuzzi took backroom parts that were cheap and readily available to create the original Monster and helped saved the company -- thus all the strange engineering that took place over the years to adapt things to work.
And wait until you see the cool stuff for the 696 and further derivatives of this bike in the future. I'm chomping at the bit to get one in here and CMM some factory parts to reverse engineer and create some really really really cool stuff for them. Any takers in the Pacific Northwest this Fall when the weather gets horrible again?
I actually started a thread on TOB: 696 - list things you like and dislike. I did this just when the 696 came out.
Now a lot of people at the time were really negative... but guess what. It was all about the aluminum second half of the frame. Odd comments about pipes, tank, this, that.... the frame dominated everything.
And then ducati blacked it out. ;D
I think the bike is an awesome accomplishment. It makes 80bhp! (my 916 S4 - the ugliest monster ever made! - makes 100). And the 696 complies with stringent European emissions.
It perfectly slots into the ducati lineup - can be used to commute daily, great fun in the twisties. And as I've mentioned before, the 696 comes STOCK with many of the mods we all crave - non-cut chop, high mount pipes, low profile cockpit, changeable skins etc etc.
When the 1098 Dark Monster is revealed... when people hear that beast sucking down O2 through the tank vents, and howling out it's termis, I think there is gonna be a collective rush for the checkbooks.
Roy [thumbsup]
ps: boobies
"- D" grade
Just too "plastic". Too busy to be called a THE Monster replacement by any means. We can hardly see the engine. Didn't like it on day one. Still don't like it today. In fact the more i look at it... the more i don't like it. I can't see myself owning/riding it even with larger motor inside. I don't like the 1/2 frame. Too similar to one of MV-Agusta's product line. This concept looks great on the MVs. But not on this new motorcycle Ducati made.
The only thing in common with the old Monster is the fact that they both have the name "DUCATI" on the sides of their tanks. Like someone here stated. Ducati had to put the word "Monster" on it so people will know what model it's suppose to be! Sad.
I may as well go buy a SV650 and put a "Monster" sticker on the sides and call it that. [coffee]
I'm with the Ron [evil] on this one.

The future looks great for the 696 :).
Imagine all the possibilities...
Wait 'till Ducati show all their cards for the 696, (mods, products)
696 will be the moneymaker/bread and butter of Ducati Motor Holding S.p.A
Most of the 696 here at Bay Area Ducati dealers are spoken for.
Ducati is on target and on point on this one. [thumbsup]

demo rode one last week didn't care for the look & it seemed to lack any balls. imo [popcorn]
on second thought, [puke]
I dont like it for all the reasons Ducati think we will like it.
Theyve tried to take ideas from the desmosedic and other ducatis.
i don't like the oversized frame tubes. from the superbikes.
the seperate subframe from the desmosedici
and the exhaust from a 70's honda monkeybike
thank god it doent have a sss. so theres some hope for it.
i wonder how long it will be before someone puts a 696 engine in an old skool monster. that'll be sweet.
I have to say I like the 696, I'd like it even more if it had a SSS.
We'll always have our old school monsters to play with, they'll be classiss before we know it!
Come on guys, you must be kidding !!!
I mean, you cant run around and pretend to be monster lovers and then eat this masterpiece of design failure ?
Look at the TNT, the Brutale, the Speed Triple and even the Tuonofish.
Those are beautiful design examples with a lot of character and enthusiasm, charm , style and soul.
The 696 has NOTHING of the above.
It finally has the technical improvements people are asking for over the last 10 years and its well appreciated.
But look at it...seriously...its a Fisherprice toy !
The rev counter is butt ugly and only suitable in a track bike...I cant see shit on it in normal daylight.
Hidden under a fairing it works, but not up there in the wind.
The frame...oh my god...what happened to the Trellis ? How could they !!
Carbon monocoque GP9 ok, bolted Aluminium why not...but THIS looks like someone put a real Monster and a Shiver in the teleport chamber of "The Fly" and forgot to shoot the result
Also the donkey ears...hahahahaaaa....cant stop laughing...now that you can actually see something in the mirrors they make you look like Sancho Pansa [popcorn]
And the iMac tank panels....come one...seriously....we ask for personal crafted carbon fiber covers for our little finger and now we need to accept this ?
Anyone knows the Mercedes Benz SMART ??? Well, i do [puke]
Should I mention the exhausts ? Looks like someone from Greenpeace put up a place for birds to nest in.
I could add endless ugly details more and I really hate the reviews that all focus on just being new and fancy.
It looks like shit , its lacks soul and innovation ...period.
If I want something that just works I get a GS
No wait...I have a beautiful 695 :)
i've come to like the style of the.. bits and bobs. but it looks like they did the mods that a lot of people like to do.
i can't get over the lack of the trellis frame, though. it looks like those Suzuki t-bar things.. extra.. pastede on, yey.
i want to see Next Year's, if there's any refinement or reaction to the reactions to the design.
I prefer the current generation.
But I really wanted to vote for.......
I vote we lock this thread just before The Ron's current ban ends. ;-)

I test rode one yesterday when I picked up my plunger, I like the way it looks the handle bars are closer the brakes are great but for some reason I like my 695 better. it just seems to me like the same bike in a different package. Its set up for my weight (150 pounds) but it just didnt feel right, it accelerates the same it handles the same. The sales guy told me they are comming out with an 1100 version of the 696 and that the S2 will be discontinued. I think I will try and get an S2 1000 next year if there are any left.
I really like the way the 696 looks but it was kinda of a let down. :'(
Sooo...I ve been to the dealer yesterday with a friend and we made the big A/B comparison.
I have to say it feels a lot better than it looks.
All the tech mods are fine with me but I still think its an ugly piece of plastic crap.
The also got new 848s in white and red and hey, thats a real Ducati in my opinion.
But...my friend is 1,65 and he was very happy with its even smaller proportions.
So pretty soon I can bash it in real life I think :)
The more pics I see posted of it, the more I f*ckin' hate it. It actually manages to make the sv650 and Buell Blast look quite attractive.
i agree, that is the ugliest bike i have ever seen. I dont like anything about it. I would rather ride any jap bike out there, for some reason it looks like one of those pug nose dogs. I dont see why anyone would spend good money on something like that, but i guess each his own.

Let's be honest, I also get jealous when other people have a nice bike that I can't have ;D ;D ;D
if someone gave me that bike, i would immediately sell it on craigslist for half of what its worth just to get it out of my sight its so ugly.

Funny, only on a ducati forum is where there are negative comments about the 696. I have had my red 696 for about a month and when I go ride I have a smile from ear to ear, and not just from riding a monster with termignonis' but from all of the only positive comments I receive.
Everywhere I go people are always telling me that I have a nice bike, Smiles, thumbs up, walking up to me and wanting to know more about my bike.

I think the 999 caused some similar reactions and in the end they gave in and Ducati redesigned it, right ?
I just want to prevent them to feel "OK" with that design catastrophe.
And heck no , I am really not jealous...
Its the same bike I have just looks a lot different.
Taste is different and beauty just a matter of definition.
I don't want anyone to feel sorry about their new bike, its a Ducati in the end.
But this is the official bashing thread and ,HELL YEAH, thats what we will do [evil]
Yes, there were people who loved the 999 too. I just hope that Ducati hasn't shot themselves in the foot once again. I read the Cycle World comparo between the 696 and the KTM 690. The KTM won. Wasn't it Cycle World that started whining for a Monster redesign? Before the redesign, it wouldn't have meant much - the Monster was a classic in a class of its own - but now that it has been redesigned it is fair game for endless comparisons.

To all of the 696 haters, I got news for you the 696 is here to stay.
Too bad you don't have a choice, means zero.
You can bash it as much as you want.
Thats really all you can do, who care's.
Ducati will still make them and people will keep buying it.
Think about this, its only your opinion. Its does not matter in the big picture of things.
You know why because opinion is like assholes everyone have one.
You can love or hate the 696, but guess what it's Ducati's new Monster.
In closing, thanks to all of you. Everything will be ok in Ducatiland [thumbsup]

I'd venture to guess that something like a S60R would kill most any naked bike from 100 on. From 0-100 it'd be a whole 'nother ball game.

Anyway it looks like shit and I dont want to be caught on one of the toys
But its ok, there will be be a new model within two years if we are lucky.
I bet it wont stay another 15 years like the beautiful, classic, stunningly perfect old design...wanna bet [wine]
you said so ???, how do you know all this? Do you work for Ducati ?
I hope not ;D Give me facts my friend and quit spreading FUD in DMF [roll] [roll]
ps
I like my 696 to be ugly and bad looking, the way it suppose to be.
Not all pretty and sweet looking. Ugly is a compliment ;D ;D
You guys are obviously entitled to dislike the new monster... the PROBLEM is that there are better ways of saying it. You are being pricks to the new owners.. what is the point in being an ASSHOLE to someone who is so happy to 1) Have a ducati and 2)have found this forum?????..
what a WELCOME some of you are giving to our NEW members/riders.
There are a couple of threads that talk about how some Ducati owners are pricks and snobs... ARE YOU THOSE TYPE Of DUCATISTAS? Plus... c'mon... IT IS A DUCATI.. NOT A JAP BIKE... and it looks like MV's brutale... do you hate the brutale as well? let alone..... do you go to the MV forum to tell other riders that their bike looks like crap? I don't think you do... or want to be the asshole.. LET'S JUST RIDE AND GET ALONG!!! [beer]
I'm just curious as to why there is some much venom in the postings regarding this bike. I, personally, don't care for the looks in comparison to the older ones but that's just my biased opinion.
Do I have the need to shout it from the rooftops and burn any I see? No, because I'm not retarded.
If you don't like it then don't buy one, simple as that. Majority opinion will rule and if sales drop then the styling will revert back. Spouting shit about bikes that others here have just bought and are enjoying is just childish and serves no purpose other than to point out to others that fact about you.

Yes, its true - many of us think the 696 is butt-ugly. So what? It wouldn't keep me from buying or riding one. I never thought any of the older models were very attractive (particularly the water-cooled 4V's !!!) to begin with. If you think this bashing is particularly harsh, well - stick around, you ain't seen nothing yet!
You shoulda' read some of the things posted about my 620, probably make you feel a lot better about what some of us think about your bike's looks...

It so sad I have to defend the 696 on a Ducati board.
I'm new to Ducati and thought It's a cool bike and have a nice community.
Cool bike yes, nice community I don't know??
Most of the guys here made me feel welcome.
Some are just straight up dicks and snobs.
Oh well, the 696 is not my first and last Ducati I'll own.
I'll get a 1098, ST3 in the future.
The way I see it bashing the 696 is like hating on Ducati itself.
Enjoy your bike and I'm sure I'll enjoy mine.
Love all Ducati's, too bad some Duc owner don't feel the same way..

100% agree! [thumbsup] First I thought this is a great community for Monsters. Now I am thinking it's a board with BS and haters! If you do not like new 696 just write something to Ducati SPA, tell them not to make them anymore and express how sick the design compare to old ones, make you puke and all that BS...
Now all you haters just discourage potential buyers/ riders to the world of Ducati.

I typically defend the 696, but some people don't like it, and they made a place where they can pick on it together (this thread). I encourage that-it keeps them out of the appreciation threads. To each their own, and if they want to hate it, that's fine. I just don't know why you would try to defend *that* bike in *this* thread. It's a losing battle.
I'd also feel it makes it harder to ask the trolls to leave those who like it alone in the appreciation threads alone if the people who like it won't leave the trolls alone in this thread. Good fences make good neighbors. Just sayin'.

EXACTLY - I've never read the 'appreciation' thread. I started this thread because too many 696ers were getting offended by any negativity. Plus, this is a 'safe zone' for THE RON [evil]. It was silly that he got suspended for his thoughts.
'It looks like a silly child's toy' ties into how childish the 696ers are about someone saying anything negative about their bike. :'(

THIS is the bashing thread !
its the one place I can relief my anger about what Ducati did to the most iconic bike they have.
And again...I dont wanna put people down who really like it.
its maybe a technical evolution and well deserves some time to establish but I just get the chills when I have to look at it.
What make the Monster stand from the crowd was the classic looks that was so well transformable into everything the owners wanted.
And now we have a another ShivTripHornet...well done [bang]
On the German site the 695 is still listed for the same price, also a poll is open to the public what they think about the 696.
i think that's there for a reason...its called : doubt
No, i don´t work for Ducati or something, I just know they can be flexible and change things if they are not appreciated by customers the way they expect.
But please, check the page count on this thread and then see all the other happy ones of 696 owners.
I just cant stand all the happy ProSecco "chinchin" anymore [drink]

My attitude is "Live and let live". If someone likes the 696 then fine. Good for them.
Where I begin to spew venom is when I hear that the Monster I know and love is on the endangered species list. Practically every bike I have owned has gone out of production within a year of me buying it. Maybe I'm just too old to understand but I still like the idea of a basic bike that appeals to my visceral side. I don't care for fancy electronics and digital toys...ABS brakes or interchangeable tank panels. I just want a bike that appeals to my emotions. The "old" Monster does and the new one doesn't. In three or five years when I want to trade my bike I don't think it will be for a 696 or any of its variants. I will be looking for something like my S2R.
The way things are going it probably won't be anything in the Ducati lineup and that really sucks for me. :'(

I dont know if Ducati cares if I like their bikes in the future.
I did so far and I shelled out some good money.
But probably I will grow old very fast and want a Multistrada or something GSish then [puke]
GS is one of those bikes the press is full of nice words for...Especially here in Krautland.
Maybe because the rest of BWM is fugly too...who knows.
Magazines here didn't like the 620/695 that much...always compared it to the cheaper, more reliable, easy to handle SV650s and crap like that.
The 696 gets a lot better reviews..but its function over form..very German, thank you.
I fear the 696 WILL be a success
You know why ? We got our old Monsters anway .
And new people want new toys.
And its not a bad bike , of course not, its a real Ducati.

You may be right but what is clear to most of us is that change is good in most things in life. There are still a minority that only prefer things never change but this is unrealistic. You guys can keep your old bikes and restore others and put them on a pedastile or what ever you want but for many many others change or progression is good and stagnation is bad.

Hey, I tried to get a guy to photograph me on the new Monster - he just tuned red and asked me to leave, but go back after hours? Weird. I mean, is it considered socially irresponsible to sit naked on a bike in a dealership? I had little choice since I can't buy one yet. Some people are so sensitive.
First all monsters ever built are BUTT UGLY, look in the dictionary for definition of ugly you'll find a pic of a monster, so saying the 696 is ugly is really accurate in comparison to other monsters, now other bikes like the brutale...............that's another story! ;)
BTW> I've had a couple monsters over the years and enjoyed them immensely, and love the new 696, a very capable bike for what it's designed for.
The other thing I've got to wonder, who gives a rat's a** what others opinions are of the 696, if you like it that's all that really matters in the scheme of things. Unless the detractors are making part of the monthly payment for you, no room for their opinions! :)

big
I had the opportunity to check out a 696 the other day. Having heard so many people say, "It's much better in person" I had a very open mind and expected good things. In my mind, unfortunately, it is not better in person. It may be worse.
The tank is bulky, and plastic-y, and cheap looking. The headlight is goofy, and not at all flowing. The pillion cover and "fairing" is like a combination of all the worst design elements from the tank and headlight. The cans are just too big and misshapen. The seat seams poorly constructed as the vinyl "floats" above the padding like a trampoline. (....will it eventually stretch and sag, like granny panties?)
On the other hand, I see many things they did right. The curved front header routing looks great. The swingarm is beautiful. I don't mind the trellis / aluminum combo frame at all.
So, I still think most of the problems are easy to "mod away" with the exception of the tank. I'm sure there will be fix for that, too .... eventually. ;D Once modded, it's be a good looking bike! [evil]
I'm sure it's soul is still pure Ducati. The riding experience is, no doubt, intoxicating.
i hate the 696 with all the hate in my little black heart..... [bacon] [bacon] [bacon]

Got to see one up close and for the most part it looks good, but once I saw all the plastic up front of the engine, I couldn't focus on the rest of the bike ...I really don't understand the need for all the plastic. took all of 10 minutes to remove it
I recently purchased a new 696 and I really love it, but I do see your points regarding the styling of the bike. Compared to the previouse models it doesn't have that classic look anymore, and with regards to the new look ducati could have made the bike flow better with a little change in the tank and seat. If ducati had made the 696 look exactly like the below pics would most or all of the haters/bashers opinions change? Discuss:

Pizza Monster said in august of this year he "kinda likes the 696." Previously he said he was against it. He's both ways Pizza Monster - worse than a flip flopper :D

open question to the haters:
did you hate the 600/620/695 as well? i.e., is this performance based hatred or entirely cosmetic?
oh, welcome back the ron.
cosmetic for me, the thing looks like one of those pug nosed dogs.
Yeah, its just ugly...nothing personal.
I want a 699 next year.
All the tech goodies with the old design....please
Hey ron....look what you did ! check out soldiers profile info...he sold the 696 and got a Try-oomph now [evil] [clap]
i can see it now......
ducati realizes thier mistake by changing the monsters looks and quickly tries to CYA by halting production. Soon the new monsters become the old monsters that no one wants....you cant give them away if you tried.
It will go down in ducati history as one of the biggest mistakes they ever made, and will become a joke around the water cooler at ducati dealerships everywhere..... :'(
the people that purchased them will sell them for parts, and run off to buy the latest V-Rod that just came out.
i was actually going to get a speed triple until the 696 came out. the 695 didn't do it for me.
i love the pearl white 696!!!!!!!
Are we still hatin' on that thing? ;D [popcorn]

I do too much texting to remember syntax, spelling, etc... my apologies.
I personally love it(have one ordered) I'm new to ducati's, and it seems like a lot of the "dislike" for the 696 comes from a familiarity with the older model. Most of you have or are familiar with the older models, so to you it looks strange, wereas I have no preconceived idea of what it should look like. I must agree with most of you that the stock cans are odd, but I think the performance slip ons or a black powdercoating go a long way.
Well, you should cancel the order and get something with real power like an S2R then.
Its a lot more that the fat cans...the whole design is one big catastrophe and a Kotau before the space ace style Kawasuky came up with.
Do you have the chance to see a Brutale or a TNT in person ?
Even a Tuono looks like a proper bike compared to that toy.
And again I appreciate all the tech stuff they did...that's what we asked for...not to make it fugly
I go out and polish my 695...she deserves it [wine]
This is the most rediculous thread. WE all love Ducatis! My 696 makes the same wonderful sound as my 1992 851 (well almost, the 851 revs higher). It is not the first Duc with a wet clutch, it is not the first Duc with high mount exhaust, it is not the first Duc that is radically styled (the 916 was a "radical" design for it's time, under seat exhaust, HAH, that will never work! single sided swing arm, NO WAY). WE all know the 916 is now thought of as one of the most sexy bikes ever. Do you think 355 Ferrari owners are bashing the pround new owners of the 599? Doubt it! Bash a rice rocket for Petes sake! ( Who is Pete? Hope you like your Duc which ever flavor you own) I'm out!! Peace!! [wine]
P.S. Ride safe!! [moto]

this thread should be in a suzuki or harley forum.. not a Ducati forum.. it is offending to 696 owners.. Look what you did to soldier707.. He couldn't take it anymore and traded it in for another brand!! all because you put his bike down..Not cool..
Are you the kind of guys that other threads in this forum complaint about? you know the kind... the ones that looks down on the other guys bike in his face.. That sounds like a jerk to me...Don't intend to offend anyone.. but that's what I would think if It happened to me. ??? or you wouldn't do that to another rider you just met on a 696 on your Sunday ride?
it may not be totally cool, but on the other hand people could lighten up too.
people have been calling the 4 valvers ugly for a long time due to the radiator and plumbing. Not going to make me go anywhere.
One thread of people who don't know how to just keep quiet shouldn't send anyone running for the hills. And if it does...well...we're not here to please 100% of the people 100% of the time.

Yes it's kind of ridiculous but fun in it's own way. BTW, it is probably safe to say that we all love Ducatis but it should also be obvious that all of us don't love all Ducatis. [laugh] Lots of folks didn't like the 999 in a big way but that never bothered me. The 696 people need to grow some thicker skin that's all.
it's kinda the other way around.
The fact of the matter is the 696 will out handle the previous gen.
I think you guys need to get over the monster being revamped to IMPROVE IT.

If by the "previous gen" you are refering to the 695 or 620 you may be correct. I don't believe it will outhandle the Monsters with fully adjustable front & rear suspension.
Ron --- I don't think he has comparing the 696 to any of the Superbikes, of any generation. That would be just plain silly.
In no way would i compare it to the SBKs, different bikes. Yes i believe the SBKs are better, Ron. [evil]
Look, the point is the chassis of the 696 is better than the last generation of monsters. If part for part were equal, ie when the big daddy monster with the fully adjustable suspension comes out, yes it will beat all your monsters (i'm sure there a few STELLAR exceptions to every rule).
IT's NOT an insult to the prev gen monsters, its evolution.
do you think Ducati would build a monster that handles worse? no, they built it better.
The previous gen monsters are rough, tough and yes, cool looking. they had (have) power in raw force. but the new gen is smoother, handles better and when the new engines come out, will out gun them. people will tune them, change them and they also will develop unique personalities, each and every bike just like the old gen.
I've had both. and when someone goes from the same size bike to the same size new bike they WILL see and feel the difference. hell i went from a 99 M900 to the 09 M696 and I feel a difference. TEN YEARS of refinement, enhancement and redesigns. Track experience from Ducati and yes, even every one of your inputs into the design of the new bikes.
Ducati has looked at your works of art and said, let's start THERE. give it high exhausts, give it a rear subframe they can do WHATEVER they want with it, give them a higher ground clearance and cleaner lines to work with. and yes lets give them things to change and customize. THEN they added something more. They gave it better brakes, better handling, a better starting point for each of you to grow your own works of art AGAIN.
wow, sorry, got inspired.
Ever been passed by a guy on a thirty year old bmw? or see the video of the goldwings ripping up the Gap? or had a twelve year old kid on a 125cc racebike use you as a moving chicane on the track?
tech improvements in a model are an insignificant part of the equation compared to the rider.
Except for guys getting paid to race, we should buy what we enjoy ourselves as there is allways someone faster on 'inferior' equipment.
So the looks do make a big part of the motorcycle purchase decision and for good reason. bikes are emotional.
So the folks who like the 696 should not worry about people like the ron. Who give a rat's ass if he doesn't like the look of the bike?
But leaning on tech arguments is difficult in a class of bike where outright performance isn't the biggest concern.
And the people who don't like it should ask themselves why they care so much about the issue that they need to spend this much time telling everyone their views on it.
I ride what I like.
and, unfortunate that this is apparantly so rare, I take pleasure in other people enjoying their own bikes. I like to hear when people get all excited about their ride. Harley guy proud of his new chrome accessory? cool. can't be any worse for me to listen to him than it is for him to hear me drone on about BST wheels...and you know what? we both enjoy it...different aspect of the sport that's all.
There is a big difference between pointing out to Ducati that many folks don't like the design direction the monster is taking, and pointing out to a new bike owner that you think his new pride and joy looks like shit. It would be so much nicer if we had more of the former and none of the later.
This entire issue has been very intersting, and tells me more than anything else who I'd like to have a drink and bullshit about bikes with.
Statler, is correct, we all ride what we love. Bashing someone else or their ride is BS.
We ride, which is better than most people out there that don't.
The bonus here is we ALL ride a make of motorcycle that has a soul like none other.

I find it refreshing when compared to fact that most of the time we suck eachother's dicks around here. Yet we would laugh a group of guys who all choose to hang out because they where Nike shoes or because they use [insert brand name here].
My personal opinion is that the 696 looks like it was designed by Matel. But the Duc dealer here in town says that is typical. He says that previous monster owners hate the thing and that riders (new and experienced) that have never owned a monster tend to like it.
sac
well i guess if you look at the numbers on this poll. you're in the minority.
We all love Ducati. and we all love our bikes for what they are. my personal favority is a last generation 750 SS which I haven't had the opportunity to buy YET.
Others love the 2nd Gen monsters (the SSS bikes)
Still others love the original monsters
And others wouldn't get caught dead on anything other than a SBK.

Please!! Negative people suck!
How do I say this? Hmm. First, did not mean to "bash anyone for their decision". I saw the new direction of a company that did not agree with me, and I wanted to pregnant dog about it. If my opinion on a bike is a personal attack on someone, I'll retract my off-colour description.
Second, My asthetic equates with the tradition. I bought the monster for the look, and discovered much more as a result. Shallow decision, perhaps, but my addled brain does not allow for much. Like opening a chocolate bar, and finding a golden ticket.
Thank you DMF, for a forum... "Your bike and yourself are perfect."
The 696, and 695 styling is what drew me to Ducati. I didn't buy one. I bought a S4R. As I learned about them, I learned they don't have any power... and there are other issues. Like the 696's effin' ugly head light.
But you know, if it makes people happy.

ever wonder how the original monster was made....
series 1
we need a new bike. lets take the panels off the SS and put a old light and bars on it and call it a monster.
series 2
we need a make the monster different. lets take the rear swingarm and engine off the SBK and call it a monster
series 3
we need to make the monster better. lets design it from the ground up and call it the monster.

Lets take our superbike, give it a street tuned engine and riding position. We'll have the best of both worlds and create the first of its kind.
Gen 2
Our superbikes have moved on, lets take some of our new racing technology and use it to improve the Monster.
Gen 3
Lets build a cheaper Monster. No one buys them for their superbike heritage anyway. As long as it is labeled 'all new' but still looks like a Monster, we will sell a ton of them and increase our profit margin.

SBK? pretty certain the Gen 1 was the Supersport not SBK

the SSS wasn't necessary, it was a styling thing.
Gen 3
hmmm cheaper... better brakes, better engine, better handling, SBK and D16 similar frame w/subframe. yeah i see what you mean about cheaper. [roll]
Things I don't like on the new one compared to the old one :
1. The tube frame is bulky...the old one is a nice piece of craftsmanship
2. The alloy sub frame looks like a cheap axis on a skateboard
3. The swing arm also looks cheap and welded by a dumb robot , but I know all three are due to the fact that mass production makes it cheaper and more controllable...even more reliable and easy to replace.
4. The mufflers are ridiculous , fubar
5. I have trouble reading the digital cockpit in daylight
6. The head lamp is stolen from the Brutale, Chinese style...
7. Removable tank panels...come on...iMac or what ?
8. Mirrors look like donkey ears and still don't really work
9. The tail is just weird...
10. The line does not flow, its edgy but not edgy enough like a KTM
I like the new exhaust flow system a lot...looks way better than on my 695
Also you sit even better on it and you don't have to stretch that much to the handles.
They reworked the engine a little...good..that's what they do best anyway.
It still lacks adjustable levers, like my 695 and the reach to the levers is way to big.
Also the clutch only works on the last five millimeter only...a knob would do too.
There are still some of the old flaws existing, some parts are built to remove them the moment you buy it.
But you can´t change the frame or tank that easily and that's why I voted against it and bought the old design
God, that was so objective [wine]

Gen 1. Google Monster and 851/888 frame - The 1st Gen Monster had the 851/888 frame.
Gen 2. The single sided swingarm was 916/996 era superbike technology - a family tradition.
Gen 3. Better brakes? dream on. Better engine? Better than what? Better handling? Better than a 1098?. Comparing a carbon fiber MotoGP frame to the 696 is wishful thinking lol
There is nothing the 696 shares with MotoGP or SBK.

I bring it up because the 848/1098 is Ducati's current superbike. This is the first Monster that does not have an ounce of superbike in it. With gen 3, the racing heritage trail has been lost :(
That is a major change in philosophy for a company like Ducati and a bike like the Monster.

Quote
A bit of history: The Cologne Motor Show, autumn 1992 â€" a mysterious Ducati prototype stands out among the new innovations on show. On display is the Monster 900, a model destined to take its rightful place in the history of international motorcycling.
Monstrously beautiful, it is a cocktail of exquisite Ducati components, including the trellis frame from the 851/888 series and the 904 cc air/oil cooled Pompone engine from the Supersport range.
So a mixture of SBK and SS. I was wrong.
But to be sure, the original monster could not out handle an SS let alone a SBK
916 swing arm heritage? innovation yes. but heritage?
the 696 and 848 share components. clutch, brakes (which are awesome), the high exhausts flow like the mh900, there is heritage in this bike.

1. This is the new SBK style frame... I fully imagine in a few years some aftermarket companies will have lightweight rear subframes, mono rear subframes, tubular rear subframes... try that with the gen 1 and 2 monsters.
2. See 1.
3. The swingarm, well we see now the 1100 will have the SSS so point is that I also see aftermarket potential here for tubular or lightweight construction. it is a VERY strong swingarm design
4. Rear exhausts are high and short, similar to SO many of you that chopped your stock exhausts. seems you got what you wanted in stock form.
5. have you tried adjusting the backlight? did you know it's adjustable?
6. the headlamp, to me, looks like an advanced form of the original.
7. i think it allows for some real customization here. and less expensive. for those of us who dont want to spend tons of money or have a bike totalled because of a dent. a good move
8. mirrors are subjective. they are funtional and reflect more a sport bike heritage than the old circle mirrors.
9. the long tail seems that long because the bike is more forward focused, something i really appreciate. although a short tail kit is in the mail for me.
10. I think the lines are a lot better the more you look at it and see the thought process.

Not so fast there my fellow Ducati lover.
If it were built in China like everything else in the world, I'd agree and would not have purchased one. Fact is it's built by Ducati at the Ducati plant by Ducati employees. Who by the way have been building OTHER Ducati bikes for YEARS. Since the Monsters are not really for the racing circuit, the 'racing heritage' argument doesnt hold water. These are naked/street fighter bikes. That is why Ducati makes Superbikes AND Monsters. One to win the races and one to pay to build the bike to win the races.
The heritage comes from the COMPANY not the bike. It's like having one sister and five brothers. Does that fact that she's got boobies mean she doesn't have the 'heritage' to belong to the family?
Love my 696.
Love the high megaphone exhausts.
Love the unique headlight... previous iterations of the monster line had a "stock" headlight that basically could have come off any motorcycle ever built.
Love the aluminum subframe. Gives the bike a sportier look in my opinion.
LOVE LOVE the brakes. [thumbsup]
Don't love - the seat. Nutcrusher galore. Will be the fist "mod" I do. Probably a Corbin.
Sidenote: Has anybody noticed that the main detractors are 695 owners? Do we detect a note of jealousy/buyer's remorse here? "Damn if I just waited another year!" type situation?
Anyway, it is all about what you like. You dont have to like my 696. I don't like the Japanese bikes at all. But that doesn't mean that the Hayabusa sucks, it is after all the most powerful bike available right? The Ninja is supposedly the most affordable and reliable bike there is. Still don't like it. I like my Duc. And when the time comes I will get another Duc. No doubt about it. NOW GO RIDE BEFORE WINTER HITS!!!
