Title: Happy days.... are here again!
Post by: Cher on January 10, 2012, 07:32:53 PM

The cast on my wrist/arm came off FINALLY today, woo-hoo, and the Ducati replacement bodywork got here yesterday.  The bodywork is in unbelievably good condition and won't need to be painted   :o  Only problem is... they're red (not there's anything wrong with that)  [evil]

It's going to take a few days before I get the hand back to 100% but I think that by Saturday, tools and swearwords will be flyin'

So, if any of y'all are sitting around this weekend with nothing to do, cruise over to Casa Boyd and join in the wrenching revelry (or swearing, which ever strikes your fancy).  There will be beverages for sure and probably some cooked-out beef of some variety  [bacon]

I can't wait to get my Duc back on the road!

Congratulations on getting the cast off, and on getting all your various and sundry body parts sorted out.  ;D
A wrenching party sounds like a great idea. Look forward to hearing more details, count me in! [thumbsup]

Yeah, I really liked yellow on my 999 before but this red donor bodywork is in good enough condition to not need repainting.  Which saves me a lot of cash for other things I'll need to do to get it running again.

On Saturday I'll work on reassembling the lefthand clip on and all of the stuff that bolt to it.  I'd also like to get the left side foot peg and bracket put on, plus install the new gear shift lever and shift rod.  Next will be the battery box and all the crap that's crammed into to it  [bang]

I'm not planning on sticker kits or decals this time... Maybe a number plate... But that's it, I swear  [evil]

Lisa, do you remember that I have a CutGrafix white number plate kit that I never used? Although it's for my 2005 trip9 (which does not have the "jack-o-lantern" face front fairing like pre-2005 bikes) the rear piece should fit your 999 too. You might check their website. PM me if you are interested. I ordered it then found a rocking deal on an OEM 999S tail piece. So it's just been sitting around.

Progress report for anyone who gives a hoot:
Almost all of the damaged pieces have been removed.  I've got several boxes of new bits that replace pretty much everything on the left hand side of the bike.

All the replacement bodywork is shown... the red pieces are all from an '06 "S" model (yeah, I paid extra for the reflectors  [evil]  ).  Found a great deal on a red tank locally so I decided to get it to go with the rest of the red stuff... it was cheaper than having to strip and repaint the yellow one.  Tail section is black with a white number plate.  I'm going to leave the tail section black, paint the rear subframe gloss black, and put a white number plate on the front.  VOILA!  Let's ride...

Cool.  I'm not sure which one you have but I've got a long front number plate with a red stripe along the border that I'm probably going to use.  The rear tail already has a factory applied number block so I'm good there.

Thanks for the offer though  [beer]

I got a lot of work done this weekend; removed and replaced the left side rearset and Oberon foot peg, and the damaged shifter rod and pedal.  Then I removed and replaced the left side clip on, turn signal housing, and clutch master cylinder/reservoir/lever assembly.

Then I tagged and removed the pulverized battery box and wiring harness (ever wonder where the 400 miles of wiring on a 999 is located?  Well it's coiled up like a poisonous Slinky behind a 12" x 24" plastic battery box of course  :D  )

And, just because I wasn't already having tons of fun, I decided to remove the intake runners and check the air filters.  Both runners were full of sand and miscellaneous debris... the left hand air filter was full of pea gravel  :o   Inside the air box I could see a fine layer of sand on the fuel injector shower assembly and bell mouths so I decided to remove the air box and give it a good cleaning as well (besides, I still had a couple of beers left so what else could I do?)

I guess it's all part of the fabled Ducati Experience.  Plus, I look at it this way; just like any other motorcycle project, if I ever decide to do something like this again it should only take half the time... in this case 45 days instead of 90  [evil]

P.S.  No tools were thrown in the making of this post...

Ha!  Funny you should say that.  I'm waiting on a replacement cooling fan that goes on the left hand side of the radiator.  Once that part gets here I'll start working on the radiator.  It's not too bad, actually.  You should see the replacement ("pre-owned") oil cooler  :o  Now THAT'S a mess  [laugh]

I wasn't planning on getting that detailed with the cleaning but once the air box was off, well, there was all this dirt...

I can't help myself sometimes  [bang]  [laugh]

Working on the bike has been good for getting the dexterity back in my hand.  Still not great but a lot better than it was.  I'm hoping to ride the Daytona this weekend.  Maybe  :-\

Glad it is getting some therapy for the wrist.  It is neat to see the engineering that goes into the components of the bike up close (like the throttle body brackets), especially on the sbk's where so much is buried under the body work.  As for riding, they do make quick turn throttles, I  just put an r6 throttle tube on the buell, probably reduced the throw 20%

Yeah down at this level of minutiae there are some really beautifully simple engineering solutions all over the place.  I've got a whole new appreciation for this bike.

Thanks.  Everything plugged back in with no "left over" connectors  :D so I think that part of it is OK.  The routing looks alright but I'm not positive about that.  Won't know I guess until I try and fire it up.

Next on the list is putting the air box back on... THAT could be a problem.

Can you loose the air box and put on K&N pod filters?

No, I don't think so.  The air box is completely buried down in the "V"... errr, "L", plus there's a radiator in front and bodywork on the sides, so you've got the intake runners funneling fresh air from the front of the bike down into the air box.

I think there's even some sort of voodoo science that decides the exact diameter and length of the runners so the air charge, once it finally does get into the air box, provides maximum power when you peg the throttle.

[coffee]  Of course I could be full of poo and have no idea what I'm talking about.

lisa you are over complicating things.

what everyone trys to achieve is the correct stoichiometric mixture (chemical designation for perfect air fuel). that is why companies like ford, chevy, etc. also employ chemical engineers for engine building processes. your air fuel ratio serves two purposes. anti-pollution, nobody cares about, and PERFORMANCE tuning, yeah baby now we are talking. in theory you want just enough air to completely burn all the fuel available. doing the math at 6000 rpm you are talking about one combustion process every 5 milliseconds. remember there is fore strokes for one combustion cycle (intake, compression, power, exhaust). i dont care how good the engineers believe they are, they are not accomplishing this perfect. not in that short of time. performance engines require a richer mixture because of the heat created at those temps will destroy motors (smell of fuel at races). on a regular (not jet or natural gas) engine running regular gas try to get 12.5/13.3 to .9/1 if you had pure octane you could try to get 14.7 to 1.

Yes, and no  ;D  Rode the Daytona.  Didn't work on the 999 Sunday.

I need to put the throttle cables back together and fill it up with gas then we'll give the SBK a try.  We did notice this weekend, though, a real deal-breaker on a potential ride; the forks are out of place in-between the lower and upper triple clamps  :P  Didn't notice this before because the left side clip on was off for so long.  Not sure if the forks are actually bent or if they were just smacked out of whack during the crash.

I'm going to see if we can trailer it over to AMS this weekend and have them give it the once over.

If you guys get a chance, you may want to give the old 'loosen all the triple clamp pinch bolts and wiggle the bejezus out of the bars to reposition everything' trick a try.  I had to do this both times I took unplanned stops for a dirt sammich on my DR-Z.   [thumbsup]  The legs just got a bit twisted in the yokes and needed a little encouragement to get back into place.  I'm going to hope this is all you need to do to get the 999 back in the game!!

That's great advice.  After looking at the situation a little bit more, that's kind of what Alan was thinking;  loosen up the triple clamps a bit and give the fork tubes a bit of *encouragement* with a rubber mallet.  Too me, that's all it is.  Doesn't look to be anything serious.  We'll give it a shot soon.

My next question is... How do you bleed the clutch?  ;D  Looks to me like all you need to do is open the bleed valve on the top of the slave cylinder and pump the clutch lever until all you get is hydraulic fluid - no air gaps.
Title: Re: Happy days.... are here again!
Post by: hiero on February 01, 2012, 05:40:51 AM
Pretty much the same process as bleeding your brakes.  http://www.ducatisuite.com/brakebleeding.html (http://www.ducatisuite.com/brakebleeding.html)

I switched to an air compressor driven bleeding rig a while back and it makes the process super simple and without any guesswork (and works on the car too, which is helpful).

I got my 999 back from AMS Friday with a clean bill of health.  The only unforseen issue was a torqued steering stem  :-X  Everything else was good.  24k mile service was done also - tuned it to match my Leo Vince full system - and the thing is back to screamin' fast.

It so nice to have my Duc back  [Dolph]

Thanks very much to Stuart, Jordan, Dan, and Sophia at AMS.  Y'all rock  [beer]

The only kind of problem was with fitting the "new" 2005-2006 bodywork and the Leo Vince exhaust; clearance issues on the right side where the bodywork fastens below the foot peg meant I either had to cut my new plastic, fabricate a new mounting bracket, or put the original exhaust back on.  Opted for the path of least resistance:  stock pipes are back on.  At this point, I JUST WANT TO RIDE, and after a 150 mile loop this afternoon, I'd say it's all good!
