Title: Don't let this happen to you !
Post by: DoubleEagle on June 24, 2008, 07:18:56 PM
It was a beautiful day so I geared up , checked the MonsteR R over and off I went for what seemed like a perfect day for a nice, ride in the " Hills ." I rode 95 miles with a stop in a Park for a water break and to admire the surroundings. Then off again deeper into the hills. When I returned home I was feeling really good about my safe , pleasant ride. I even met another Duc rider on an Orange (?) 748 . Well my brother said he had some news that I probably wasn't going to be too pleased to hear. I said I really was feelin' good and didn't need any bad news. ....but he told me anyway....I had no license plate on my bike !

That really pissed me off since I checked the tightness of the nuts before I had left. I changed out of my gear and got in the cage and back tracked the last 25 miles I had ridden.  With no luck finding the plate I figured it was a lost cause and went home.

The license plate was held on with plastic bolts and nuts, the same as my other bikes and in 4300 miles of riding my S4Rs it's plate has never been loose . The R had 141 miles on it when I started out and in 95 miles managed to vibrate the plate off.

Have any of you had that happen to you ? What do you think the safest way is to mount the new plate when I get one knowing the  R vibrates alot ?

Use nylok nuts. Once they are tightened up they won't vibrate loose. Good luck.

i would say get some real bolts(like metal ones) and use nylock nuts and you shouldnt have a problem.

I have found the best thing is to use Double sided Tape on the back of the plate and then also use the nut/bolt's as well with a couple of drops of Loctite blue, never come loose since.

just get some long bolts and a nut for the back.  i have a 6x25mm bolt with a nut on mine and its held for 3 years.  i had a homemade plate bracket fail before the bolts vibrated loose.  i got lucky enough to catch it before the other side broke off.

I use lock washers on the back side of the plate mount. No problems.

Hey don't laugh but this is a great idea. i have a black fram around my plate and 4 lack zipties with the locking thing out back and it looks really clean and no ugle bolts. Does not come loose even when i had the tire hit it.

I went to Loews today and got 2 ss bolts ,2 lock washers and 2 nuts . If they vibrate off now w/ checking every chance I remember , then I'll put little padlocks on the son of guns.

Zip ties at all 4 corners of the plate. Never had a problem.

I lost a tag like that, too.  I'm not sure if it vibrated loose or somebody ganked it.  It read UGLDUC.  Pissed me off, 'cause the DMV wouldn't reissue it to me.  Now I have WTFDUC, and that thing is bolted on with nylon washers.  I like the loctite idea, though.

Pepboys sells a anti theft type of nuts and "bolts" that are anti vibration as well.  Cost about $3 or so.
