What's strange to me is that soon after Kelley was hired by the Eagles, he said he wouldn't run the same Duck offense in the NFL.

Yes, there are situations near the end of a game (usually when all it takes is a field goal to win) that a
coach can decide to run the ball a few times just to run out the clock. However, when a QB sees a play that will get his team down the field, he has to take that shot, even if it means leaving 2 minutes on the clock for the other team to catch up.
Coaches are usually responsible for clock management; QBs execute.

This might be fun. I've been trying to pick the winners each week, but it's not that easy to do, even without the point spread. Here are next week's games.
NFL 10/24 - 10/28, 2013
Favorite Underdog My picks.
Carolina At Tampa Bay Carolina
San Francisco At Jacksonville San Fran
At Detroit Dallas Dallas
At Philadelphia NY Giants Eagles
At Kansas City Cleveland Chiefs
At New Orleans Buffalo Saints
At New England Miami Pats
At Cincinnati NY Jets Bengals
Pittsburgh At Oakland Raiders
At Denver Washington Broncos
At Arizona Atlanta Falcons
Green Bay At Minnesota Packers
Monday Night Football
Seattle At St. Louis Seahawks
Pick the most winners to collect the prize.
Tiebreaker = Predict the total points scored by both teams for the Monday night game. Total Pts. = 50
This is just for bragging rights. Can you pick the winners for next week? I was a very pedestrian 10/3 last week and I missed the total MN pts. by 30.
Cincinnati over Miami tonight

QB more than LB or really any other player. But that's because the NFL today is not your father's NFL: in 1978, 26/28 teams attempted more running plays than passing plays; in 2010, 4/32 teams ran more than passed. QB is everything now to a team and even to a player. Just ask Greg Jennings.
The Colts went from 10-6 to 2-14 after Manning went out with more neck surgery. That one player made all the difference.

Hard to argue with that, especially when you look at the last ten Super Bowl winning QBs.
Super Bowl 38. Tom Brady (MVP), 3 TDs
Super Bowl 39. Tom Brady (Deion Branch), 2 TDs
Super Bowl 40. Ben Roethlisberger (Hines Ward), 0 TDs
Super Bowl 41. Peyton Manning (MVP), 1 TD
Super Bowl 42. Eli Manning (MVP), 2 TDs
Super Bowl 43: Ben Roethlisberger (Santonio Holmes), 1 TD
Super Bowl 44: Drew Brees (MVP), 2 TDs
Super Bowl 45: Aaron Rogers (MVP), 3TDs
Super Bowl 46: Eli Manning (MVP), 1 TD
Super Bowl 47: Joe Flacco (MVP), 3TDs
Not too many scrubs on that list.
I still say pass rusher is the 2nd most valuable asset to a team because the new rules favor the receivers over the DBs, so the only way to stop a good QB is to disrupt his rhythm or get him on the ground.

+1
O-Line is the most important part of a football team IMO. A good O-Line can make an OK running back look great, and an effective running back can make a mediocre QB very good.
You win and lose in the trenches. The O and D-lines hold the keys to victory. It's a shame most teams don't realize that. Even the worst QB in the league would look like Joe Montana if he had a solid pocket to throw from. Same goes with RBs. A good running O-line will give a RB huge holes to go through. Even my grandma could gain 3 yards.
I think all of the teams realize it. The problem is finding (and paying) the right players. You also have to consider it's hard to build a dominant O-Line when other teams are building dominant D-Lines...and opposite.
They spend most of their money on skill players.
I'm watching the Colts & Titans. I'd take Andrew Luck over Wilson, Kapernick, or R.G. III.
Why?
RG III already has serious knee problems and he is beginning to remind me of Vick.
Wilson - a close second, but he isn't the physical tool like Luck
Kapernick- Wow, but can he improve his ability at reading defenses & making decisions quickly?
Luck has it all: the brain, the arm, the size, the speed, and the leadership.

Also a 9ers fan an I also agree that of the young stars QBs---Wilson, Kap, RG3, and Luck---Wilson looks the best. Though to be fair I haven't seen a lot of Luck. Kap and RG3 have talent but when they face good defenses they get confused and take a lot of sacks or make bad decisions. Wilson seems cooler in the pocket and able to read defenses a little better.
Anyway, Niners/Seahawks should be closer than the last one, since it's at Candlestick.

The Eagles O line is in serious shape to be running the plays they do at that pace. The center (Kelce) is a beast!!

Arizona gave hope to the rest of the NFC by beating Seattle at home.
And they beat Seattle at home after throwing four picks! Impossible but they did it. Incredible defense.

I think time will tell. If the Eagles continue to dish out whoopins' like they did last night, many teams will begin using versions of this offense. This reminds me of a guy named Walsh who championed the West Coast Offense back in the 80s. Look around and see how many teams run his offense today.

Walsh didn't win any, but it was a big thing for Stanford to win the Pac 10 & go to the Rose Bowl back then. I don't know, did Kelley win one in college? The Ducks have been sniffing the top 5 for the past several years.
The fish flopped against the Jets today, but the Eagles will soar tonight.

Chicago should be ashamed. Their defense this year was the worst in club history. Pathetic. Fired a 10-6 coach, to be 8-8 this season. Cutler is still sourpuss Cutler...even with a supposed great offensive coach. [thumbsdown]

I think all of the games are close and really too close to call. Like my wife said, her hopes are on the Niner's but not her money. I'm going to be a contrarian and here are my picks, ignoring the spread:
New Orleans - Sean Payton is just a good enough coach to pull this one off.
Indy - Luck and Co are really going to be believing in themselves after last week's game.
SF - Not voting with my head since Kap played here in Reno for 4 years and I'm a fan.
San Diego - No logical explanation for this pick.

Another member of the four for four club. ;D
Picks:
Niners @ Seattle --> Hawks. I like Kaep, but I think Seattle's defense will be the difference and they're tough at home in general. May be the game of the year. Low scoring grind of a game.
Patriots @ Denver --> Patriots. Tough call as I think they're both evenly matched (and overrated), but Brady is clutch in the playoffs, and I think Belichick is a better coach. High scoring shoot-out.
Interesting that the AFC Championship game is between two teams with probably the best of the old school QB's while the NFC game will be between two of the best of the New Era QB's.
It seemed to me that the Niners and Panthers played with visibly more intensity than the Chargers and Broncos. This is lots of fun and I still can't believe football season has gone by so fast.
Goodell and the NFL may have to change there skivvies---these are the dream Conference Championship matchups from a marketing/popularity perspective. Gonna be a lot of viewers.

Broncos over Pats- Gomer has too much firepower with Thomas, Thomas, Welker, Decker, and Moreno. Brady is Gronkless.

While I don't think it was a great policy...they refused to sell to 44 states, of which CA was one. They didn't do it to keep Whiner fans away, and in fact the states were chosen before the Saints game last week. They only sold to PNW states in an attempt to slow down the secondary sales market due to what they saw with the Saints tickets.
FWIW...Denver did the exact same thing. NE fans can't get tickets.
Anyway...I think the Niners purchased some faulty whoop-ass or something, as the last 2 times they've came to our soggy city it hasn't been pretty for them! [evil] I like Kaep, but GO HAWKS!!

Keep in mind I had no dog in the NFC fight other than the lack of professionalism of some of the Seattle players as evidenced by the strangest post game interview I've ever seen. ???
The timing of those two calls forced situations.
I agree that the picks ultimately lost the game, but if SF had gotten a first down on the obvious roughing, not 'running in to' the kicker, or been given the ball on the goal line on the botched fumble call, the game
might have turned out very different.

The only bad call of the game that could have made a difference was the roughing the kicker call. Who knows on that one though, SF was way on their side of the field.
The one above call, c'mon! Sure, it was a bad call. But Lynch fumbled the next play, giving the Niners the ball back about 15 yards further from their end zone than where they would have got it if the right call was made! The only thing different that could have happened if the right call was made is the Seattle defense could have maybe gotten a safety!
As far as Sherman goes, he should have been more professional, and he was during the interview after the game. That said, I'm sure Crabtree and Boldin (biggest shit talker on the field) didn't say anything during and before the game though to get him that fired up.
I love the SF/Seattle rivalry. The last 2 times they met were the best games of the year, and it seems whoever is at home is likely to win...barely! Good stuff. [thumbsup]
Kaep's turnovers weren't good, or really his fault (except for one), but SF lost because they couldn't stop Lynch. Seattle's offense was dead in the water without him...just like SF's was without Kaepernick.

Apparently the Sherman - Crabtree feud dates back to the off season when they both attended a charity event in Arizona, and Crabtree apparently tried to start a fight with Sherman. Sherman won't go into details publicly, but his brother has said this is the general issue. All Sherman will say on the subject is he's going to make Crabtree's life tough in the NFL every chance he gets! [laugh]

I don't know about the past...but the current rivalry isn't "media-made". SF & Seattle are clearly the 2 best teams in the NFC West (actually the NFC), and have been for the past 3 seasons. Both teams are built very similar, they're close so the fans travel, and the teams don't really like each other. It obviously isn't the oldest rivalry in the NFL, but I don't think there's a better active one right now.
It has actually become fairly entertaining this season. Before the game in SF, a group of Seattle fans pooled their money to have a plane fly over Candlestick for 30 minutes befoe the game pulling a 12th man banner. In response, a group of SF fans pooled their money to have a couple billboards put up in the Seattle area reminding us how many Superbowl titles the Niners have won. [laugh]
No one gives a crap about Arizona or St. Louis.
I think it was media-made to start with because I don't remember it being a thing until the Wilson / Kap comparisons got made in sports media mid last year. But because the teams became the two best in the NFC and because the players bought into the rivalry narrative, it has quickly blossomed into a fierce competition that I hope continues indefinitely.
I guess I'm just arguing symantics---I consider a rivalry something with a longer history of iconic games with something on the line that ultimately encompass different personnel, different styles of play, different eras, etc. Manning/Brady is a good example, as is pretty much every permutation of NFC east teams. Anyway, the current 49ers/Seahwaks agon is pretty dang good and I hope it continues for years to come. But as a niners fan, I'd prefer outcomes turn out the other way. :'(

I think we should have some good entertainment for years to come. Both are young teams, with young QBs, superb defenses, and great coaches. That's what I was thinking. Rivals are usually fighting over important games, and Seattle hasn't had too many in their history.
An interviewer once asked Steffi Graf about her rivalry with Gabriela Sabatini. (#1 female tennis players)
Graf responded, "We've played 18 times and she's won two. You call that a rivalry?"

That's what I was thinking. Rivals are usually fighting over important games, and Seattle hasn't had too many in their history.

Seattle leads the series (16-15). Just sayin' ;) That said, it is definitely a new rivalry.

5 Super Bowl victories to maybe 1. Seattle was never relevant before, so it was never much of a rivalry. Now, Yes.

Ah yes, the SB victory argument. Last one being 20 years ago, so yeah. Candlestick might have even been a nice field back then! ;D Seattle has never won one though...they went 8 years ago and lost. Seattle has a miserable sports history...WTF, we have the Mariners. :'(
Neither team has San Francisco hasn't been relevant since 2002 when they were placed in the same division though. Seattle has won 6 NFC West championships since then. New era, new teams, new rivalry now though. 8)

Don't give up, Triple J. Consider Boston as a model: Sox had a 8-decade old monkey on their back, and Pats were perpetually mediocre, with 1985 and 1997 SBs as two disappointing exceptions. Then, in early 2000s, something happened and now both are perpetual contenders with insufferable fans. ;D
[laugh] We'll never be as bad as Sox/Patriots fans!

Denver over Seattle

I don't know if anybody read the news article about this incident, but the girl did this to put a smile on the face of her brother who was suffering from severe injury or illness. When Deon Sanders heard about this, he urged authorities not to arrest her because he (Sanders) would just go down and bail her out. I think she was fined $50.00 and released. ;D

Patriots @ Denver --> Patriots. Tough call as I think they're both evenly matched (and overrated), but Brady is clutch in the playoffs, and I think Belichick is a better coach. High scoring shoot-out.
What a performance by the Hawks! I figured they'd win, but that was utter domination!! [thumbsup]
Congrats coach Pete, you deserve it. [thumbsup]

Look's like Joe was checking Farrah's Faucet.
Congratulations Seahawks, great team effort! [thumbsup]
Speaking as a guy with "no dog in this fight" the game sucked worse than the halftime show. [thumbsdown]
Carroll made Fox look stupid. What was with the intentional 2nd half shortish kickoff? I think they were trying to force a turnover but they couldn't even make a tackle much less force a turnover.
That has been the worst SB I've seen in a long time. Only Seattle fans are happy with that game. Even the commercials were disappointing.

As a fan of a great defensive team (which the NFL has ruined with all the rule changes) The game was very exciting to watch. Denver hands down has the best offense in the game, and they were stomped like a 'narc at a biker rally.'
That's what was intriguing about this game. The b should have the upper hand, but the O didn't even show up to the stadium last night. I would have much preferred a closer game.
Best comment I've seen "It was like watching Hamilton Burger practice law."

Once again, they were totally outplayed. They showed up, but a 'Great' defense was waiting for them.

+1
I think Denver's Offense showed up, it's just that they've never seen a defense as good as Seattle's. Seattle easily has the best secondary in the league. Sherman is a true cover corner, and Kam Chancellor is an animal at Safety. Their linebackers can also cover. Finally, they're D line was able to pressure Peyton only rushing 4, like they've been doing all year.
Peyton was pressured a lot, and he had nowhere to easily throw. He's a great QB, but it was a blueprint for how to beat him.
...and Denver's defense is mediocre at best.
Cracks me up how everyone thought the 40-10 ass-whooping Seattle gave them in the pre-season was a fluke. Um, nope.
I think the Niners would have stomped them too if they would have made it, as them and Seattle are almost copies of each other.
