It was in Ligonier, PA... Just by the Sheetz where 711 and 271 meet... You were BLASTING up 271, and that little make the beast with two backser shot out in front of you with his tail STRAIGHT up... nearly rocketing himself across the road with a stream of shit and fear blazing behind him. You swerved JUST in time, and I think you may have nicked his asshole. You both looked pretty shaken up, but it was a hell of a visual from my perspective!
Black monster/goldish frame.
Just wanted to share.
It wasn't me, I have witnesses.
That little dude is damn lucky that he only got any asshole trim. [laugh]

we know it wasn't you because you wouldn't have swerved and you wouldn't have missed...you woulda targeted and hit successfully !!!!
I still can't shake the image of the squirrel the rider in front of me cut in half and it was still attempting to move.
Squirrel 0. Rider 1
Do not swerve to miss rodents. ;)

Yup, had the same happen on Palomar 3 weeks ago, had to duck to miss the "shrapnel"

^^ This.
Or cute little feral bunnies.
Or chicken eatin' bastard foxes.
This thread is hilarious.
is there a universally accepted body weight where it becomes safer to swerve? I'm sure as hell swerving for cattle and deer, but what about raccoons?

I think it depends on the bike and how the suspension is setup....
I was told if you can eat it in one sitting don't swerve. IMO, you can go a bit larger.

especially in winter, if you have studded tires:
My MSF instructor described small critters as "squishables". Squirrels, rabbits, etc. Do not swerve.
Raccoons can get on the border of "too big to hit". Depends on the size of the 'coon. As stated earlier, the exact size limit depends on bike (wheels/tires/suspension), rider, and situation. On an R1200GS Adventure, I'm probably gonna run over anything up to 25 lbs or so, maybe more. On a Panigale? I think 15 might be the high end of "squishable" for that bike.
This is also a prime example of why you should never ride at 10/10ths on the street. Always need to leave room to maneuver if that deer, cow, or other "non-squishable" suddenly appears in the middle of that corner.
One of these days one of those stupid turkeys on Centerville Highway is not gonna get outta the way fast enough, and it's gonna meet the front tire of the Cagiva...
RE: studded tires
[laugh] I want those for winter riding on the GC.

I hit a standard poodle once on a 250 Suzuki @60+mph. I was to slow and too inexperienced to do anything but hit it. Somehow (most likely due to doing nothing) the bike and I and the girl on the back ended up on the side of the road completely upright. We were 100% good, the dog was not :'(
Momentum, how much you do when it happens, size of the bike, so many variables......
You hit a standard poodle on a 250 Suzuki at 60 mph? :o
That is not a small dog.

Summit Point Main...Turn 4...forgot about that one...there is also one video out there of a strike between 9 and 10 that was pretty horrendous looking also...

A buddy of mine from back in CT used to ride his dual sport in the winter with "custom" studded tires. He just went to Home Depot and got a buch of self tapping sheet metal screws. Took him abount an hour to do both front and rear...

I've thought about doing that. Gotta get it past wifey, though... she's not big on the idea of me riding on snow/ice. It's not keeping the bike upright she's worried about. It's the idiot cagers slip-sliding all over the place and potentially taking me out.
That deerstrike video is wild. Speaking of deerstrikes, I clipped one in the Sky yesterday. Doesn't appear to have damaged the car, but it sure tripped up the deer. Around the next bend, I had to throw out the anchor for a big buck mule deer that wasn't smart enough to exit the road... started running along my path of travel in front of me. Modern rifle season opens this weekend. I'm looking forward to the herds being thinned a bit.
Saw a deer bolt across turn eight at Willow once. If you hit a deer at the track is was sooo not your day......

or if you can get the front wheel up before impact. [evil]
I can thoroughly affirm that squirrels are decidedly more "slickery" than mice and rats.

Great rule of thumb (or fork)! [drool]
So much for the "deer season" theory. Bucks all went into hiding but the does and fawns are still out and being as stupid as ever. I went and looked at the rules... in this region, it's buck only, 3-pt minimum. The does have nuthin' to worry about. [bang]
Had a young'n eating in the back yard just this morning. Looked right at me through the master bedroom window when I got up this morning... then went right back to eating. [roll]
I am in deer central. Every morning I fly I see about a dozen running out from bushes near a fairly busy road. I have actually had to be careful to not scare them into the road. They don't like the noise of the burners much.....
Almost got one last week, Mid day, big buck standing int he road, just staring at me until I came to a stop. Then he jumped out of the way.
One less grey squirrel alive today. I think it was suicide. It paused at the curb, then sprinted about 8' to make it under the tires of my car. I don't swerve for something that small. [coffee]
