Title: Amazon
Post by: kopfjäger on December 02, 2013, 01:16:11 PM
I saw this on 60 minutes last night. That company is gonna take over the world.  ;)

Good story. Bezos is an interesting guy for sure.

He's involved in a lot of unique projects as well (easy to do when you're worth $25B). Here's one that I know a little about...my company is doing the rock mechanics for it:

Por que?

Theft, power lines, light poles, restricted airspace, weather, noise, conflicting municipal codes for use, etc, etc.

He said the other night the FAA approval will be in 15. Less than 10mi from one of their distribution centers with delivery times as soon as 30min.

The big issue I see is theft & weather. The rest can be handled for specific applications.

Who knows how they really plan to use it though...or if they even do. It might have been a big hoax to throw everyone off.

Sounds perfect for moving target shooters.  More exciting and challenging than skeet and you might get a prize!

Theft wouldn't be any greater than it is now.  It is a lot harder to track and follow a small flying object that doesn't follow roads than a big ass brown truck that does.  It might actually be less as some of those big ass brown truck drivers are prone to "lose" packages.

Personally I can't wait!  I am gonna run along under one until it fails and falls on my head.  Then I am gonna sue the pants off of Amazon.  (Okay I don't sue people) However it is a point overlooked.  Anything mechanical will fail and fall when it flies.

With today's interest in Drones it ain't gonna be safe to stand outside any longer.....

I will have to agree with Kopf, Nice thought but ain't gonna happen.  Hell some people freak when I fly a balloon 1000ft. over their homes, wait till drones start falling out of the sky.......

I doubt that has been overlooked. No one has mentioned it here, but I guarantee that Amazon has thought of it and likely has an estimated failure rate. I do agree that it's a serious consideration.

It was a nice publicity bump for Amazon. On 60 Minutes the day before cyber Monday?  [thumbsup]

I've ordered a bit of stuff from Amazon, and IIRC, nearly all of it came from the manufacturer or their distributor.

So their distribution centers are going to be how big?
They're going to stock a distribution center with all of the stuff they sell?
Or only the little stuff under, what, 8 ounces?

I can get stuff from San Francisco or San Diego *next day*, via UPS ground.

IIRC the article said 5lbs or under which makes up over 80% of what they ship.

Really depends what you order. We order a fair bit from Amazon, since I hate going to malls, and overall I'd say we've gotten more form Amazon themselves than from a separate supplier. Seems they don't carry the specialty stuff...of course the definition of specialty varies widely.

I did a quick Google, and a HexaCopter with a true 5-lb payload is upwards of $3k, and over 1 meter span.

That's a big expensive bug flying around.

I was thinking this thing is an 8-rotor job, and looks to be at least a meter wire.

Doing some online shopping today. Several products stated 'sold by (insert co name) and fulfilled by Amazon.

Does that mean the order goes through Amazon, and the 'manufacturer/distributor' drop ships it to you?

That's my understanding, and how it seems. Amazon is just a way for more people to see their product.

If you watched the 60mins episode on how one of their fulfillment centers works, you'd think different.

It means its on Amazons shelf. 99% of the stuff I buy from Amazon, is shipped by Amazon.

I did watch it. They have a TON of stuff in their fulfillment centers, but sometimes you get stuff from them that isn't in an Amazon box (1st hand experience)...so it seems like it has been drop shipped. Also, this usually corresponds with items where Amazon Prime (we're a member) shipping isn't available...again, suggesting it is being drop shipped.

I obviously don't know for sure, it just seems that way. Maybe what Speeddog referenced isn't related to whether or not the item was drop shipped?

It says when it's being shipped by someone other then Amazon. And as you said, it's usually not covered under Amazon Prime. I normally click the Prime Only search box and rarely buy anything that's not Prime.

If you click on the "more buying choices" it shows you the list of the vendors selling the same item. I don't know how some of them expect to sell an item at a higher price.

And we get a discount at Surefire as well. You know that right? 20% off. They are down the street from me if you ever want something picked up.

That's what I was saying, some of the price differences are substantial. Gotta like the 20% off.  [thumbsup]

The 50% off at Oakley is even easier to like.  :) Also down the road, they have a store at corporate that we can shop in.
