I've ordered a bit of stuff from Amazon, and IIRC, nearly all of it came from the manufacturer or their distributor.

So their distribution centers are going to be how big?
They're going to stock a distribution center with all of the stuff they sell?
Or only the little stuff under, what, 8 ounces?

I can get stuff from San Francisco or San Diego *next day*, via UPS ground.

IIRC the article said 5lbs or under which makes up over 80% of what they ship.

Really depends what you order. We order a fair bit from Amazon, since I hate going to malls, and overall I'd say we've gotten more form Amazon themselves than from a separate supplier. Seems they don't carry the specialty stuff...of course the definition of specialty varies widely.

I did a quick Google, and a HexaCopter with a true 5-lb payload is upwards of $3k, and over 1 meter span.

That's a big expensive bug flying around.

I was thinking this thing is an 8-rotor job, and looks to be at least a meter wire.

Does that mean the order goes through Amazon, and the 'manufacturer/distributor' drop ships it to you?

I believe Amazon fulfills the order that was being sold by 'said' company. (?)

That's my understanding, and how it seems. Amazon is just a way for more people to see their product.

If you watched the 60mins episode on how one of their fulfillment centers works, you'd think different.

It means its on Amazons shelf. 99% of the stuff I buy from Amazon, is shipped by Amazon.

I did watch it. They have a TON of stuff in their fulfillment centers, but sometimes you get stuff from them that isn't in an Amazon box (1st hand experience)...so it seems like it has been drop shipped. Also, this usually corresponds with items where Amazon Prime (we're a member) shipping isn't available...again, suggesting it is being drop shipped.

I obviously don't know for sure, it just seems that way. Maybe what Speeddog referenced isn't related to whether or not the item was drop shipped?
