Title: Home audio component advice for shop use
Post by: Monsterlover on January 17, 2014, 12:51:21 PM
Maybe a different thread title will draw in the right people...

We need tunes badly.  Normally we stream Pandora and cable the pc to the stereo with the aux input.  One of the guys brought in a sony bookshelf system about a year and a half ago and it finally gave it up.  Sounded great, took a pounding but after all a bookshelf system is just that and really doesn't belong at max volume for years at a time [evil]

I want to piece together a receiver/speaker/sub setup from used stuff to keep the price down.  I was surprised to find Sony receivers on ebay for $75ish.

It's been so long since I bought audio stuff I have to ask what to look for.

So, what should I look for?  Only requirements are: it must get radio signals, if it doesn't have an aux input i at least need to be able to adapt that to an rca input, it must be able to drive two speakers and a sub and a pretty good sound level. . . forever!!

;D

Thoughts on speakers/subwoofers?

Your local Craigslist should have something.  What was your budget?

There's something as cheap as this...    http://erie.craigslist.org/ele/4293489883.html (http://erie.craigslist.org/ele/4293489883.html)

Honestly it lasted 18 months at just about full volume.  Not too shabby!

I'm hoping to spend under $200

Look for some older Pioneer equipment.  I've got a 20 year old receiver with a pair of KLH speakers that are just as old.  The speakers were cheap but put out some serious sound.  The receiver has never been past half, even at college parties.

This (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pioneer-VSX-1018AHK-7-1-Channel-910-Watt-Receiver-/161196717205?pt=Receivers_Tuners&hash=item258812b495) is waaaaaay more receiver than you'll ever need at the shop.

But it'll certainly do everything you want it to.

but... his shop is not to be treated like some little 2 car garage.

Right now I just have a little cheesy $100 stereo but plan on doing a real setup with a good sized receiver and somewhere in the neighborhood of ten or so speakers

I know.

Whatever you get, Kev, you need to break it in correctly.

Might I make a suggestion?

This will do nicely. I've got my sniper on it.

I am a huge Denon fan though, but cheapness prevails.

I've got something similar to this here in the shop here-
http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/ONKHTS3500/Onkyo-HT-S3500-5.1-Channel-Home-Theater-Package/1.html (http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/ONKHTS3500/Onkyo-HT-S3500-5.1-Channel-Home-Theater-Package/1.html)

do you need over the air radio, or is internet ok?
you might find a speaker dock (or bluetooth) that you could stream from your phone
as a bonus some are waterproof  and you could hose it off when it gets dusty

I ended up buying this

I bought the 3 year warranty since we broke the last one in 1-1/2 and splurged on next day shipping. $241 total.

Happy.

Probably out of your budget but if you really want a system that can run at high volume 24/7 a 75V system is what you need. A crown amp and a few JBL control 25t's or 28t's will do the job and if you want you can always just add more speakers in line without having to worry about impedances. You may be able to find some stuff used from a restaurant that went out of business. If you have more speakers around you can also keep the volume lower.
