Hi gang! Hope we're all enjoying this new Monster board. Anyhooo, I'm wondering what sort of tank bag suggestions I can get from the in-the-know Monsterheads out there for a bag that'll be tidy and not too fugly on my '08 S4RS Tricolore. Kinda hate to cover it up at all, if you know what I mean. And I certainly don't want to damage the paint in any way. Suggestions? Pics?
Tank bag's going to be tough for an S4RS. The gas tank is plastic, so you have to get a tank bag with straps. They make those, but only a few looks good (The DP's cool!). I'm considering using a tail bag. I'm waiting to see if I can jerry-rig the new 696 tail bag to fit on my S4RS.

Have you got a cargo net on the back yet? I know it seems obvious, but for carrying small stuff the net is 100x more useful and easy to use.
I own a magnetic bag that works great (not for you of course), but I never never use it unless I need to carry more than my trusty net can hold.
The net looks cool too.
There's the kind that you basically bolt a little ring to the gas cap and it has a little plastic doohickey the bag hangs on to. Doesn't even touch the tank-my buddy has one on his MV Augusta. I can ask him what it is if you like.
"Fugly" is in the eye of the beholder.
I have a Givi T419 Voyager (http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/productview/890/331/). It expands to 42 liters. Since it's not for everyday use, I rarely use it on the Monster but regularly on the Bandit.
Yeah, thought about the tail bag, but I like the look of the Tricolore tail cover so I'd like to keep it on. Too bad I can't strap stuff to the beer tray, but it'll block the taillight and I can't have Johnny Law citing me for that. At this point the DP strap-on bag is looking better and better. That Tourmaster looks pretty good too. Gotta hunt around and see if I can spy one in the flesh. I saw a pic on the "old" board of a Tricolore with a strap-on bag that looked pretty decent and unobtrusive. The hunt continues . . .

Good to know, I'm getting mine soon wt:
How did you secure the straps under the seat?
The straps went around the outer frame rails just aft of the tank. Where it tightened up, it comes up to mount the rear of the bag. I'll have to put a picture up when I get home. I can't really describe it in words ~

Great - I'll be looking for the picture :)

+1 especially since the stock paint is known to be soft. I'd suggest that whatever you get you put a large piece of felt cloth between the tank and bag. It'd be a shame to mar the paint job you really love.
I just bought the cortech sportmaster super 14 tank bag. I love it and it looks awesome just like all of the rest of their products http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/1/4/71/1556/ITEM/Tour-Master-Super-14-Tank-Bag.aspx

It helps a lot.
I thought it might had to go around the hinges for the tank - sharp edges - didn't like that.
Thanks wt:
I'm actually thinking about the 18 liter. What about size? Too big to reach around/lean over?
I have clip-ons below the triple and my chest nearly touches the bag. It's close enough for me to rest against when I'm on the slab without really moving. Not sure what size mine is.
JM
Nice strap positioning in the back. Any chance of getting pics of the front and an overall view of the bag installed? Thanks for all the input guys!
I can once I get home, bike & tankbag are here with me, camera is at home ~

Here's some shots:

That looks like the perfect solution, great size and good fit. The pics are perfect. Thanks so much for your help. I'll see if I can get one pronto. I take it you haven't had any strap chafing issues?
Not that I've noticed. If you pay attention when you're running the rear strap around the frame, you can keep it clear of the edges of the seat braces and such which could damage the strap with a corner. Mine came with a rain cover that seems to work. It's never sat in the rain with the cover on it, but I did ride for about 30 minutes with the cover on and the bag stayed dry ~
JM
I will be using mine for touring and I think I'll go for the 18 liter. From your pictures it seems like there is plenty of space. It comes with the rain cover integrated and cool features like a shield cover, safety tether strap and hydration bladder - none of which I'll ever use, but I like the little, smart things.
Thanks for sharing - great community spirit wt:
EDIT: forget I mentioned the 18 liter - only magnetic version - now for the 21 liter :e:v
I would think any of the larger sizes would be fine if you don't have under-tree clip-ons. Excellent bag, magnet or strap. I went strap because I carry a digital camera in it on a regular basis. Wasn't sure of magnetic interference with the camera or card ~
JM
The cortech looks sharp... thanks for the pics and info.
Anyone have any experience with the Icon Urban? I've had good experiences with Icon boots and gloves, but haven't tried any of their luggage. The shop down the street is closing out their Icon line and is cutting deals...
Thanks in advance.
Check this out.

I don't have a pic but I've been using the Vina model for years and love it. They give you a plastic ring that goes around your gas cap, the bag clips directly to the ring and never touches your bike. Best tank bag ever. After riding on a long camping trip and seeing the damage caused by my strap on bag I'll never use another.
I don't know how this is going to work yet but after I heal up and get back in the saddle I'm going to try taking these 2 smaller carry bags that look like you could put a Thermos in each one and run the belt the I wear with my leathers and put them behind me so they will be belted to me and they shoud lay on the seat. Hopefully it will work and I can carry a bottle of water and my wallet and a few other necessary items .

I have a friend who is very anti-tankbag. He bought one that attaches like that for his Daytona and loves it. It's made many long distance ridees. His was the Luggage Locker brand. Link is below ~

Biggest problem I have with a tank bag is when I lean in a corner the bag has a tendency to slide toward the inside of the corner because of the heavy water bottle that lies on top of everything else that is packed into the little bag. That is with the bag that is attached like the one above with 2 bar straps and one bottom strap clipped together.
Mine strapped as you say has never moved, even with a water bottle & DSLR camera in it. Maybe you're just not pulling the straps tight enough ~

As did I as well. Great Bag, no major complaints. Not quite as big as I would have liked, but a good compromise between storage and comfort. I dont think I would want anything much bigger over tank.
Thanks for all the input gang. I pulled the trigger on the 14l Cortech from motorcyclesuperstore.com. Good price! While there I picked up a new Michelin Pilot Road 2 for the front of the Multistrada (another great price!) and got free shipping. I'm really grateful for the detailed mounting pics too. Thanks again for all the hard work there. I think this'll be just the ticket for the Tricolore, nicely shaped, not too gangly large, but a pretty useful size for day trips and the little odds & ends needed for everyday commuting. Another pregnant dogen accessory!!!
Just a quick plug to give a thumb's up [thumbsup] to motorcyclesuperstore.com. The tank bag & tire arrived quickly and in perfect condition. They kept in touch via e-mail and gave me tracking information and a follow-up survey to make sure I got the stuff properly and was satisfied with the parts and service they offerred. Good company! Now it's time to mount up that Cortech tank bag! Thanks again for all the input and pics.
Appears I'm too late but I'll give a +1 for the Bags Connection/SW-MoTech sold at www.twistedthrottle.com:
My girlfriend has the "Engage" model and it's just made for the monster. Barely touches the tank at all, rock solid mounting, unobtrusive and has other options available.
http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/productview/2131/451/
The also have a larger version the "Engage-XL":

Hope some others may find these useful.
I have this one and it works well. It also expands from 17 to 30 liters if you need it to. I can also strap it to the seat behind me if I want to. Plus it has the magnetic option if you want to use it on another bike. One drawback is that it has no smaller pockets for quick access stuff like wallets or cameras.
Ordered a Cortech Super 10 from the local shop last week. Only looking to hold a change of cloths for the beach. They had a super mini and it was perfect but you can't put much in that. The super 10 is supposed to be about 2.5 inches longer.

i just picked this one up from a local shop. hasnt been on the bike yet.

Herm,
've been looking for that RT bag for a while but no one local has on. How is the quality? Could you be a lamb and take a few pics and post them once you fit it?
