When is Ducati ever going to get the S2R 1100 to market? To me it is taking forever. When I started to get serious about buying a Ducati was around the same time the 1100 DS engine came out in the Multistrada. So I incorrectly thought that the 1100 DS engine would quickly become standard in all the bikes that had the 1000 DS engine. Then I saw pictures of the HyperMotard with its 1100 DS engine and lots of cool stuff like the 50mm forks and cool radial brakes. So I incorrectly though they S2R 1100 would come out soon and that it would have all the cool stuff the HyperMotard had. Then the 696 was introduced. I can now see the new direction the Monster line will take, but when will the new S2R1100 be here? Sorry to rant, but I am getting impatient. I want what I want and I want it soon.
I would have bought a S2R 1000 already, but I hesitated because of a move and because of all of the ECU/surging issues I've been hearing about. So a little over a year ago I bought a super low mileage 620 to get my feet wet.
Seriously though, why hasn't Ducati put the 1100 DS engine in the Sports Classics and the Monster?
Do what I did. Get a Hyper.
It's more Monster than the new Monster is.
because what are you going to do with the warehouse full of DS1000s engines and parts?
Honestly why do you think they made S4R's and Rs? and S4?
If an S2R1000 ever came out, it would have the same stuff as the modern monster. adjustable showas taht are sprung for babies, radial brakees a definitly yes. Current S2R1000s dont even have radial masters ( atleast i think not) so i doubt an S2R1100 would), The surging issues happen through all the range of bikes, not sure if the 08's are any different. The reason for the issue is the mono lamba sensor. Did they fix this?
And if an S2R1100 comes out, whos gonna say it wil be classic ducati style and not 696 style? your screwed either way, get an S4R. [thumbsup]

I agree. I don't think you'll see an S2R. You don't think they'd redesign the Monster and carry the makeover to the entire line do you? I think the S2R is bye-bye.......

Word on the street is that the "S2R1000" will be the new 696 style. All Monsters will go to this. The 696 was an early release. We won't see the 09 line up until November after the Milan Show...
Maybe as soon as september at the EICMA show ?????????????

Well yeah -- with 696's selling like gang-busters all the Monsters are going to look like it.
Why would Ducati do anything differnt? Like it or not the 696-styleing is what it is going to be like for Monsters.
(Nether the less -- Ducati did say they are coming up w/ what, 10 new models in the coming years? You'll have a lot to pick from.)

Good point. I may do that in the future. I still haven't completely warmed up to its looks though. I love how narrow it looks from behind. Whenever I see one in person I think it looks better than the pictures which seem to emphasize that beak nose. Maybe I'll get one, chop the beak off and call it my new bike.

You're probably right. I wonder if they really make all those engines that far in advance of putting them in a motorcycle.

I didn't know the bikes with the 1100 DS like the Hyper and Multi had any problems with surging. But then again I don't really pay as much attention to them as I do Monsters.

I am assuming that any new S2R1100 will be in the 696 style but with a SSS. I'm OK with that even though I greatly prefer the classic style. I just think Ducati should have put a 1100 DS motor in a Monster along with some upgraded suspension & brakes at least 2 years ago. So I am willing to try to like any new 696-style S2R1100 bike that they produce as long as they do it soon.

Why are you assuming it'll have an SSS? You think Ducati did all that r&d and tooling for the new 696 chassis just to use something else in the rest of the bikes?

Why not a SSS? The 1098, 848 & Hypermotard are fitted with them. Ducati knows the SSS is a seller so it's very possible that it could still be used in the Monster line-up. Same deal with the dry clutch.

Well, using the 1098 and 848 as an example. They look the same don't they? There aren't two different designs for the Superbike is there?
That's because it make sense to use the same design for a given model line. All the bikes in the family look the same. Plus, you recoup your R&D $$$ quicker by spreading the design across a bunch of models.
I see the Monster the same way. It's not a question of if it would sell. Just a question of what makes sense. From a production standpoint it makes sense to use the new design across the entire range.
I guess a better way to put it is if Ducati's vision of the new Monster included a SSS why didn't they include it on the 696?
the 1000 the s2r has and the 1100 the hypermotard has arent really all that different... they have the same hp numbers, the 1100 just has a tad more torque. as if the 1000 with lacking
Maybe to keep production costs down on a yet unproven model? Time will tell. We'll see. A company has to market to all buyers and the SSS has a very wide appeal.

Well, so far the 696 has been doing pretty well. But I agree time will tell.
But it still begs the question. If the SSS is such a hit why didn't they put one on the 696? Seems if you want your new model to be popular an SSS is a sure bet since it has such a wide appeal.
I'm wondering how much the new exhaust routing and rear shock angle play into it?

Slight threadjack*
I like the SSS from the "empty" side.......... from the swingarm side - not so much just) MHO
end tj
the SSS actually turned me off of the s2r line when it first came out. i was actively looking for a left over M1000 until my dealer priced me one at a lower OTD than a left over M1000 that i was getting ready to buy.
Well they will come out with something. [cheeky]
Leave the next reply for JohnC so that he can tell me how brilliant I am

The SSS is more expensive to manufacture so it goes on the more expensive models. The least expensive models get the cheaper DSS. This has been the case for the past several years. I like the SSS, but I also like good looking DSS so it doesn't matter to me what they do with the swingarm.
696 dss looks good the 695 ones look gay. the 999 one looks SEXY!
but the 1098swingarm is the sexist

I have seen this bike before and I LOVE it. The first time I saw a Hyper in person, I wondered what it would take to tweak it a bit to make it look more like a Monster. Love the undertail exhaust on the stock one. Love the looks of the motor and the SSS. This is more the direction I wish Ducati would take for the S2R. [evil] :D [thumbsup]
Travman if you really want more then why not just find a nice used S2R1K and have the motor rebuilt with a big-bore kit and get the DP ECU. You would have a complete animal then and it would look exactly the same. I know that MotoCorse in South Florida does this conversion all the time on DS motors with a lot of success.

that hyper is nice, but first thing i noticed was the huge rear wheel. sort of odd

I like this idea the best. Soon I'll be living next to DucPond in Winchester. This shop seems to have a great reputation and they seem to do a lot of engine mod work. I'll find a used S2R 1000 that has some mods I already love and then add more to create my own version of a S2R 1100 S.

Roland Sands designed that bike and he is part of Performance Machine which makes wheels for Sportbikes and Harleys, so of course he used his own wheels and he made them extra large to show them off. I still like the bike though. Just spend the wheel money on carbon fiber BST's of stock size and the bike would be much closer to perfection.
