I am going to replace the exhaust on the 1098 before the AR trip, and am looking for options. I would like to do something other than the Termi's for variety. I have so far checked out the Leo Vince slip ons, but that is about it. Can the original computer be remapped, or will I have to buy an after market ecu?
Akrapovic full systems are supposed be the awewome... CA-Cycleworks has them I believe

There's a can of worms...
Check the 1098 forums. There's a ton of debate.
The general consensus is that you have to buy the DP Race ECU ($1,150), plus a Power Commander, plus the exhaust,
although some claim to be running a full exhaust with the stock ECU :P
I dunno.......

Yeah, they're the best. Full titanium, light weight, very well made.
Dan Kyle has the best price, & also a free map for the Power Commander.
I think the Akras have the best looking lines on the bike. They just look like they belong on there, but the full Termis come w/ the ECU so that was the big draw for me.

Yep. That's pretty much what everyone says.
$1,150, just for an ECU that's been flashed with slightly different software. It's stuff like this that gives Ducati a bad rep.
Well, the ECUs were like $800 at the beginning of the year, but the Euro is destoying the $
We should have stockpiled ECUs and then resold them lol
I was just checking them out. They do look nice. I have been reading several forums, but it is hard to sift through the flamewar that always ensues with questions like this. The bike runs fantastic right now. No stalling problems and it runs much cooler than my MV. I do not want to put an exhaust on that will involve months of tinkering to get right. My main focus is weight reduction, and cooling the tail off.
I know that Termi's are the easy way out. For no justifiable reason I am just reluctant to go that way.

Ummm, they're heavy & poorly made (the full system)?
Are you interested in the 1/2 system??
I like the look of the QuatDs as well, but the stick a bit out the arse end of the bike. The Mivv Suonos look cool too, but I don't know too much about those.

Go Akra + DP ECU + PC3 [thumbsup]
I have a full Titanium/Carbon system from Arata for sale. It is the highest quality exhaust system I have ever seen.
No 1098 experience here (999+full termi) but I love the Akrapovic 4into1 pipes on my GXSRs. Extremely well made and fit perfectly!! Great pipes!! I went Akra rather than the typical Yosh/Suzuki thing just for the heck of it too and have never ever regretted it. Nothing against Yosh at all just wanted to try something different. Have PCIIIs one custom mapped by Steve Upchurch at Motion Cycle on the 750 and one that Randy just downloaded from Dynojet's website on the 1K. Randy's download on my GSXR1000 was perfect, I have no reason to have it dynoed other than to have a printed graph in my hand. Big deal. It runs awesome just the way it is! [thumbsup] Haven't paid much attention to Akra pipes on 1098/848s but I bet they are very nice.

Nice looking setup. Would I have to run an after market ECU?
wouldn't the PC3 and the exhaust be adequate?
You can't map below 5krpms w/o the DP ECU... otherwise the stock ECU will just trim out the PC3 map
Closed loop system w/ the 02 sensor will cancel any adjustments made on a piggyback map

No, I have not. I was half serious about the 'when do we start' comment [thumbsup]
u get pm i sent?
Nope, no PM.
The full Termi kit is fine without the PC3. The PC3 is an improvement. It improves low end driveability and with good mapping also improves mid- range and top end. Dan Kyle is THE man with good PC3 prices and individually mapped cylinders which make a big difference over a single map. Kyle also has a dual map for the Akra exhaust, which he has a good price on.
Bryant is right, but basically the PC3 isn't really worthwhile unless you have the DP ECU. It won't do anything below 5k.
Check out Kyle's sponsor page on the 1098-forum for details and dyno charts.
I'd love to see Kevin's Arata exhaust. Kyle is bringing them out for the 1098 at a better price than the Akras but I've never heard of them. The Arata is even producing more power than the Akra which has been the top dog so far. They are still working the Arata muffler cosmetics but the ti pipes and welding are supposed to be top quality. Anxious to see how they turn out.

If you're trying to optimize this is really the best performance option I've seen so far (given the Kyle dual maps). The full exhausts are also considered to get more heat out of the tail section. Better flow and no cats to hold in the heat.
I'm anxious to see the Arata when they finish it.

Ron the Aratas that Kevin has look flawless!
Anything that has anything to do with Dan Kyle is etched in stone in my opinion for sure. If Dan says it's Christmas you damn well better hang up your stockings!! He is the world's nicest, friendliest zen master of of all things scooter. He has been unbelievably helpful and incredibly knowledgable with Ohlins products for my Ducatis, RC51 Honda and Suzuki GSXRs and the Power Commanders that go with them and the Sato pipes I've installed.
The Arata pipes are supposed to be killer. I've had this post/PM talk with Kevin before and from what I read in a test in either Sport Rider or Motorcyclist a while back they tested a set and said they were freaking awesome... expensive and didn't blow the dyno up in HP increase but you know, it's hard to make a huge increase over stock pipes these days. It's not like the ancient past where you could get a good 20HP increase on your Z1000/ZX1100/ZX9R Kawi or CBR900 with a good 4into1 and a Dynojet carb rejet kit. Haven't seen many of their pipes but I would love to. Like I said, what I read indicated they were very, very nice. And I'm sure those mags have seen lots of nice exhaust systems to compare it to. [thumbsup]

No I didnt... the findings are that they would fit my bike but it would take some serious creativity to get them to fit so they are for sale.

Exactly what I said. I dont want to do anything to my bike that was iffy so...
I have an "in" on the guys at Arata, so I will be dropping the 848 hint... .alot ;D
Does the 848 version have the crossover pipe like for the 1098? Dan Kyle says the 1098 fitment is a little tight, not as easy as the Akra which he gives high marks. Even though he's getting significantly better performance, I can't see putting an ill fitting pipe on the bike no matter how awesome it looks and performs. Hope to hear more on these though.

Don't the 848's & the 1098's take a different exhaust?
848 = 56mm pipes
1098 = 70mm pipes

Stoopid question but wouldnt the diameter of the pipe only matter (from a fitting perspective) where it meets the exhaust port on the head?
I think it would affect exhaust scavenging/back presssure

Bigger air pump (engine) needs bigger pipe to flow the air and keep the exhaust backpressure at the right level. The two different engines need unique exhaust designs, which would affect the fitment on each engine.

While the traffic cone up the ass is a fine suggestion, I have decided to go with the Termi slip-ons. Thanks for all the ideas. The price is just right on the termi's. The $$ saved will buy the slipper clutch that I have been wanting. Next up will be the exhaust for the 696.

Since my search for an exhaust is over, it only seemed appropriate to start the search for an exhaust for Catie's 696. This was a much easier decision, and AMS will be putting on her Termi's tomorrow [moto] The best part? She does not know that she is getting them. I will be a little disappointed if she fails to notice when she picks the bike up ;D
