a shotgun is easier to operate, easier to secure and more forgiving.  and they are much bigger which has a psychological advantage for the shooter and against the criminal.

I've actually shot people and I will choose a shotgun any day over a pistol for home defense.
Had my home defense 12ga at the range today...had a little BHO issue, but I think I got it corrected with some safety wire:

Need to get a light, rail, and foregrip eventually, just still chewing on the CMMG .22.

You could go with the Judge or Governor.   [thumbsup]

Is that a Tony Rumore build?

He cut a bunch of AK 5.56 mags for my Valmet but he won't do it anymore.. dammit..

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

No, did it myself.  Although I'd love to get Tony to hack the barrel when I get my trust done.  Pretty sure he's not taking on anymore builds until June though.

Ace folder, Tapco trigger, Promag 10 round.  Would love a Chaos Titan rail with full upper, HK iron sights....have been backordered for a while:

StatePrez, who are you using for your trust? I got a quote for $550 and nearly fell out of my chair.

A local guy that sells NFA has been helping me out with where to get templates that work, etc.  Since it can be considered unlicensed practice, I'm kind of on my own putting it together.  I've had a couple of lawyer buddies look it over and they don't see any problems.

The AR guy at my local shop used Quicken Willmaker for his- has had 2 SBR's and a suppressor ATF approved with it.

My CLO won't sign, so it's the only way.

Goat_Herder, I'm kinda in the same boat as you... I'm shopping for my second handgun (sold the first one almost eight years ago), but I'm focusing on a concealled carry weapon instead of a stay-at-home weapon.  I've been at it for a couple months now... this thread, browsing boards, talking to salesmen at local stores, talking to LEOs, etc...

The best advice I've received so far was "go shoot some guns."  Either rental at the range or from buddies that own something you're interested it - you should really try to fire the weapon you are considering, or something very similar.  All of the things you mentioned above - manufacturer, features, etc.. come together to result in unique machines with different upside and downside.  Actually firing a couple was key to me narrowing the field.

One of the few guns that I have tried that actually make the cut for easy, truly concealed carry, that is still accurate and reliable, is the Kahr PM-9.  Its slim, light, easy to use and accurate.  Shooting small light handguns well takes a bit more dedication in purposeful practice but the Kahr still has the intrinsic accuracy once you master it as opposed to some other entries in the field.  At 7 yards, standing unsupported, I can keep all my shots in about 2" if I do my job - a lot of sub compacts won't do that.

I had the 45 ACP Kahr and it did not shoot well.  It would put 3 real close and then throw one out about 8" - not acceptable accuracy IMHO.  I was very disappointed that it did not work - I liked every other thing about it.

It works.  I went the LLC route.  Come over sometime and we will discuss.

Goat Herder, pay attention to ducatiz' comments about shotguns. ;) And he's right about stress fire issues... scattergun, pistol, AR platform, etc. Get a Glock (and a shotgun [thumbsup]) for home defense then take all the training classes you can throw money at. I have posted many times about the scary shit I see at CHL renewal classes when it comes to qualifying on the range. If you can't shoot a decent score at 5, 7 and 15 yards in an indoor range under calm, restricted conditions then what the hell are they going to do in a dark parking lot walking to their car or inside their house at 3:00AM when they wake up to breaking glass?

I don't care if you buy a $300 aluminum baseball bat. Practice, train, practice, train then repeat some more. If your good at something great... practice what you are not good at. Weak hand, wounded shooter drills might some day save your life. Put night sights on everything... including the bat! [laugh] Learn how to low light/no light shoot with a Surefire flashlight. Weapons mounted lights are great. Until you go to Thunder Ranch and Clint Smith makes you disable them and work with handheld illumination.

Shit doesn't normally hit the fan on a sunny Saturday afternoon when you are watching football on TV. How you can perform at 3:00AM when you wake up from a dead sleep, tired, groggy and maybe even a little hung over is what counts. Bone up on anything Massad Ayoob has ever written or said about stress fire. Google him. If you ever get the chance to take a course from Louis Awerbuck go to it. Sell the house, the car, the honey badger... whatever it takes. He is awesome. Just like Ayoob and Clint Smith. Take courses from them all. It's worth it. [thumbsup]

I plan to list the Federal Gov't. as a dependent on my next 1040 tax filing!

I have flying honey badgers and I'm not afraid to use them!

The fact that flame throwers exist is proof that someone somewhere said "I'd sure like to set those people over there on fire but I'm just not close enough to get the job done."

CONFIDENCE: the feeling you have right before you understand the situation.

ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!!  There is no substitute for top notch instruction and frequent practice with a purpose.  At least for myself, handgun competence is a perishable skill.  I need to shoot once a week at least to keep at a good level of competence.  Just going and shooting does not really help that much.  Ayoob referrs to it as ballistic masturbation.  You need to practice with a purpose - figure out what you are going to work on and measure your performance.  Keep a shooting log and track your performance.  Set goals and achieve them.  Pick up a shooting timer and quantify your ability.  Shoot with something on the line.  Add stress.  Shoot IPSC or IDPA where you have the stress of having to perform.  Its not the same stress as an actual situation but it helps.
