Here's a cool WSJ article on training for Dakar Rally:

In it they mentioned Pine Barren.  Have anyone been there?  What is the road surface?  Is it gravel or paved?

The Pine Barrens, N.J.
This area, also called the Pinelands, offers acres of sand, pine trees, rivers, roads, and small towns to ride through. "It's very rural yet surprisingly close to Manhattan so it's a good nature escape. It's also a good way to hone sand-riding skills on large bikes to prepare for larger, more adventurous rides."

I've never even heard about this place. But I would love to find out what's there. Maybe an exploratory ride is in order once it warms up a little bit?

The roads are mostly paved and the area is flat.  It is nice though, incredibly rural for so close to NYC.  I'm not sure, but i think there are some areas for off road.  Post up on DESMO, someone there (probably Ben) will know a lot more.

There are some people in the ny/nj region section of advrider who could probably answer all your questions about the pine barrens.
