Last night when I came home from work I saw what any bike owner probably fears the most -- my bike lying on the ground.  As I was struggling to right it neighbors came out and informed me that sometime mid day someone had backed into it, knocked it over, and left. The woman who saw it was too far away to see who did it and/or get a plate number. I pretty much alternated between cursing at the top of my lungs and wanting to sit down in the road and cry.

Kudos for to the neighbors for trying to be as helpful as they could, to the Somerville Police for offering to put extra people to monitor the intersection I live near, and to Riverside for being patient and helpful in answering questions as I start the claims/repair process.

I also wanted to put up an endorsement for Dowco covers.  I'm pretty religious about covering my bike and am super glad I am given this situation. The handle bars took most of the fall and magically the tank escaped dents.  I don't know about the exhaust and of course it needs turn signals and mirrors.  However, there's not a scratch on it. The cover didn't even tear or show really any signs of what happened other than smelling like gas from all the gas that spilled.  So giant kudos to Dowco for making a great product.

And lastly, I'd like to put up a request. My boyfriend is looking to learn to ride and would love to find a beater/cruiser type thing for under $1k (e.g. have been looking at old Hondas). He offered that with my bike out of commision for at least a month, that he'd be happy look for a bike sooner than he thought he would and to share anything he found so at least I have a way of getting around (I don't own a car). It's no Monster, but I thought if anyone knew anyone that had something hanging around that they were looking to get rid of... I figured I'd ask. I should add that neither one of us has a garage or tools, so we're looking for something that runs as-is, not a fixer-uper.

I feel your pain been riding in boston and parking and today for the first time either my bike got backed into or some awhole fan today decided to be more destructive and knocked over my bike.  Needless to say slightly bent clutch lever and broken mirror that I only paid 10 dollars for.  So am I upset yes and I can only imagine how you felt with your bike on its side.  At least the perpetrator  had the respect to pick it up so I am thinking it was backed into.  How much to replace a lever anyone know?

Thanks. Ditto to panthro. A clutch lever can be annoyingly expensive ($50 or so is what I want to say) from what I remember. You may just want to see if you can find one on EBay or something if that's really all that's wrong.

Sorry to hear about the bikes.

Stock lever doesn't have the nub on it to allow you to start the  bike in gear though. $15.
