Savage has a current history of making great bolt action rifles. It wouldn't surprise me one bit that their line of .22s also rock!

Actually a bolt action .22lr is one of the guns I don't own but would like to. [popcorn] A good friend has a CZ bolt action .22mag and it's a damn tack driver! [thumbsup] Different round of course but I love shooting his CZ. It is what he uses for spring turkey hunting. I bet he has head shot two dozen plus turkeys over the years with that plinker and supplied me and the guys with untold delicious lunches and dinners! [bow_down] [drool]

Love my 10/22 Rugers and old take down Brownings but one of these days I need to look into a good bolt action .22. Funny... the older I get the more I love shooting .22s. Guess the circle is getting complete. You end where you start. ;) ;D

I have flying honey badgers and I'm not afraid to use them!

As far as bolt action 22's go, the Savage is probably one of the most accurate for the dollar.  I have a CZ 22 lr that is a great gun also.  More money, but better fit and finish.

My plan is to customize it. Something like this http://rifle-stocks.com/silhouette.htm
. I can get this stock for the CZ or the Savage. Key items that I will need are a great trigger and a threaded barrel. I will have a scope on the rifle as well.
I have a 10/22 and I love it. It is a bit too nice to take out to the field with me. It is the USA Shooting Team edition. It has the broad stripe Red, White & Blue Barracuda stock on it. It is a 9lb gun and needs a bench.

I own a Savage MKIIFV .22lr, aside from the stock being very light in balance too the barrel, the only problem was feeding the last round when the gun was new. After a little feedramp contouring with a stone, and a couple hundred rounds have had no problems. The model I have was made in Canada, shoots very well, likes a good variety of ammo. I added some weight to the stock, mounted a cheap 3x9 tasco Pronghorn scope and have fun.   The trigger pull was not bad, a little heavy but short and clean. works for what I am doing, the Accutrigger might be better, don't know. I feel this rifle is a very good deal for the money and has potential as a starting point for a nice build... [thumbsup]

The 22lr I've long wanted to own is true biathlon rifle like this:

Alas, $2,000+ for a used gun that I don't have dependable enough snow to use properly seems a bit silly. There are some conversion kits for Marlin & Savage rifles that would reduce that toll by half or more, but it's still not cheap. I've fantasized a bit about trying to organize some sort of Mountain Bike Biathlon around here...

Well then I have made up my mind. Savage it is. This will be a build and will happen after I fix up my Monster a bit. She needs a valve adjustment, belts, chain, rear sprocket and new tires. I am looking for the base gun now though. They are hard to find.
Now to decide on a color for the stock. My options are here:http://rifle-stocks.com/laminated_woods.htm

I like the apache gold, the electric blue, yellowjacket and black widow.

I forgot to add my lever action Winchester 94s to the list. Love those guns too. [thumbsup] But a good, accurate bolt action .22lr just has an appeal that's hard to ignore. Something that's fun to shoot, accurate and cheap to shoot just makes a lot of sense in this day.

As far as Biathlon rifles go, the Russian ones are pretty decent if you set them up rignt.  You can get the good ones for $1000 - $1400 new.  I have been thinking about building a biathlon gun using a Ruger 96/22 action, adding a match barrel, sights and a modified stock.  I think that would be a ripping Biathlon gun.  The accuracy for Biathlon is not that demanding.  Prone is easy even if you are pretty darn winded if you have the slightest clue about how to shoot smallbore.  Offhand is tough at the best of times - the human error there far exceeds the variation from raw rifle accuracy.  I've shot several matches and was usually one of the top shooters.  My speed, on the other hand was another story.  I've been a classic X-C skiier since the mid '70's and I just cannot make the transition to skate skiing.  I just end up laying in the snow for no apparent reason. [bang]  Some of the skaters can miss every target and still beat me with their blazing fast times.

I have a few Marlin lever rifles and one 94.....the 9417.  Sweet little rifle!

Check out the Ruger 77/17.  They are more expensive to shoot than a .22 lr but its fun to reach out to 200 with reasonable accuracy.

I have a Rossi Puma 94 SRC which is a copy of a Marlin 94.  It weighs about 2 lbs (feels like it).. Only downside for me is the caliber in 45LC.  I'd prefer it in 357, but I love that little rifle, it's a hoot to shoot.

I'm blessed with Win 94s in .22lr, .22mag, .357mag. 45LC and a pre '64 .30-.30 my late Dad owned. Now that they are long gone I wouldn't trade anything for them. A few years ago my now teenage step son wanted a lever action .22lr to go with his Ruger .22lr SA Bearcat... old west stuff turns him on! Couldn't find a Win 94 anywhere for a decent price and my older brother pushed me toward the Henry. He bought them for his 2 boys. Great push! Damn nice lever action .22lr for a great price. [thumbsup]

I also love my model 94 in .357mag. It will eat .38spl. ball ammo all day and is as much fun or more than the .22lr model 94! Great rifles. Sorry to see them go extinct. Bad on you FN! >:( But there are lots of good lever actions out there to take their place. [bacon] [bow_down]

Not that the models are the same or caliber....but

I have a Savage 110 BA Long Action chambered in 300 winmag. It's niceeeeee. I love the accutrigger system. Overall, it is a VERY well built firearm.

I think Savage makes a very good gun. I have been nothing but pleased with my purchase.

As I said, Savage currently makes some damn nice off the shelf bolt action rifles. I don't think that was appreciated or known in the past but it is now. About time! [thumbsup] [popcorn]

Sorry, stupid question... but are those Accuracy Intl. based rifles?
