Coming back to a Monster

Ok... So I just sold my GT1000 to get back to a Monster. I liked the GT but miss my old bike. I'm thinking of a 796 but not sure. I should know this but are the "new" styled Monsters having the same tank issues as the old ones? I like the old style but haven't ruled the new ones out completely.

The tanks are still PA-6 nylon but are a different color and are hidden under skins anyway. M1100 and 696 have been out a few years and you won't find many if any complaints. If you are really concerned, you can use K100 which should eliminate the possibility of water problems from E-10 if you can't run pure gas in your area. http://www.k100fueltreatment.com/

If you had an 800 before, so far the concensus seems to be that the new bikes handle better and definitely have more power. Ride one and see if you agree.

+1 for the 796.

I too miss the monster, thinking to get another one as riding season is already here.

Yeah... looks like a progression, huh? I'd be all over an S4R but I'm not sure I want to take on the maintenance costs.

I know that the performance has advanced on the new gen monsters............BUT (I know you saw the but coming),
I personally think that the older monsters lend themselves much better to modifications. Many will argue against my opinion, but allow me to illustrate my point of view with the following:

Exhibit A:

Exhibit B:

Two very customized motos. As nice as ungeheur's bike is, it somehow has less of a visceral appeal than Taft's. I don't think it's the bits and pieces as much as it is the sum of those parts.

Both bikes are nice. But if I didn't have my monsters, I know which models would be on my short list.

Best of luck to you rideserotta!  [thumbsup]

You sold me on Ungeheuer's bike!  ;D Too bad I'm feeble and wouldn't enjoy that clutch anymore.  ;) All down to taste of course. If anything, that 4V looks more like a collection of bits (to me) although those mufflers are cute. Maybe you're just used to the old bikes?

I'd go for an 1100. I've ridden a 796 and was disappointed when compared to my S2R 1k but then again like the older Monsters better. I will say the newer bike has a more comfortable geometry.

2 words... steel tank.

the reason I've kept mine and boy do I enjoy the shit out of her.  Plus the maintenance costs are not that much more, at least not in my neck of the woods.  I had the 6k service on both a 2v and 4v and the cost difference was $200 and the difference in power is worth it to me.

I really do enjoy our 696 - but visually the full trellis framed bikes are SO much better looking...

But what do I know, it's my wife's bike - and I still prefer my Guzzi(s)...

Yes and Yes.

I like the new model, just that I seem drawn to the older one a lot more. It has more appeal. I remember when I first saw the old gen Monster, stock mind you, I was absolutely floored. I still get that warm IZ_ feeling when I see a tastefully modded old gen Monster. I've yet to feel that with the new gen.

But yeah, different strokes for different folks.  [drink]
