I started kiting about 2 years ago. It's pretty tough (and I have surfed, wind surfed and wake boarded all my life), I highly suggest instruction or a very patient friend that really knows what they are doing. It's a blast though.

If you need to take lessons, come here and visit me in the philippines. Its a great sport, fun, challenging and environmentally friendly. We take out the SUP's when there is no wind. One of my friends here was traveling around with inflatable SUP's. Very cool to be able to bring with you especially here in the Philippines where there are 7,100 some odd islands to visit.

Looks fun Dan.  Watched those guys all the time in South FL.  Maybe try it sometime.

The SUP is out though.  Decided on a kayak.  Can do some SUP'ing on Jackson Kayak.

May rent a SUP this summer.  The prices are crazy on them though.  $800 gets me into a nice kayak setup and I'd rather do that.

Thanks for all the info guys!

I've done SUP. I didn't find it to be very enjoyable. Just another trendy water sport endorsed by celebrities.

I can honestly say I've never heard/seen a celebrity doing this.

I did see a special about 5 years ago thpough where Laird Hamilton took a SUP across the English Channel.

A fishing rod or three makes it very enjoyable!

Now that I could see being pretty fun! However......why not just a kayak at that point?

I think the best part of it is the view you get, if you're in clear water.

I've never been SUP but sometimes when out on the kayak, I'll stand up and drift down the river. You get to see stuff you just can't see while sitting down, if the water is clear enough.

Other than that, I'm not sure why it's taken off so much, though it does have some cool zen like quality to it

Agreed. I didn't try a SUP today but had a Jackson "Cuda" kayak I tested out and it has a rope to help you pull up to a standing position.  I had t try it out and liked it. The Cuda is a fishing kayak.  I guess fly fishing would be an option?

Anyway, I'm finally trying out a SUP next weekend.

They had the versa board today R.  I may try it next week. So expensive though after buying the board, the paddle and the upgraded seat!

I hear ya......they were selling demos around here for mid to high fives a few months ago.......the seat is 2-3 and you can spend as much as you want on a paddle.  Mine converts from a kayak paddle to a t handle.  Not optimal in either capacity but imo beats shlepping two paddles.  It was about a hundy.

Oops, i derbied myself from page 2.  For my next impression......a broken record!
