Greeting DMF members.  It was a slightly spiritual moment when I found you guys and gals - I had been looking for a Monster (but also lightly salivating over used KTM SuperDuke 990's) for a couple of months and my relatively not-so-deep internet searches for Monster Life on another planet was just not producing what I expected.  My former stomping ground BCM is closed, Kyle has moved onto Seacoast.  The Ducati Index (was that it's name?) is no longer. And then I found your Insane Clown Posse late one night while covering a 6 pm to 6 am night shift at my salt mine.  Wow.  I've been drinking deeply from thread after thread in all of the subforums.

I have lucked into a showroom new, fully stock 2001 900Sie Monster (red) with 2500 miles on it that was owned by an ex-corporate jet pilot.  All it really needs is a new battery - thanks to your threads a new Shorai willl soon be in the mail to me from Motowheels - THAT is some amazing tech, boys and girls.  But before that, and before I found DMF, I ordered some initial bits and pieces for the Redhead - an opened up clutch cover and the Comp Works tail chop kit.  I too enjoyed the Lost in Translation experience of that kit's instructions all on my own.  What else for now?  Well, I think a 14T countershaft sprocket might be in order - I had forgotten these things come geared for Daytona...

In a former life (say '95 to '02) I roadraced in eastern Canada (Shannonville primarily) with occasional visits to the Loudon series.  My last racing sled was a BCM-built 800 based on a 92 750SS that was a lot of fun.  So I learned to speak some Duck during that time:

These days I have slowed it down a bit and race vintage dirt bikes.  Trees are kinda firm but the ground is definitely softer.

Looking forward to the benefits of DMF membership!

Hola - it also needs new cam belts  ;D But guessing that since you used to race a duc you know that story.

I'll be up that way (sorta - closer than normally) this summer. Wifes family has a camp at Lake Ozonia, working out how to get my Ktoom up there for some exploration. Not a SuperDuke, just a big thumper (690 Enduro) but I'm digging it.

Hello again, and thanks for feedback.  In general when considering bike's age I thought..hmmm...rubber goods - and DIDN'T think about the cam belts but was actually staring at what look like perfectly good OEM tires.  That is where my lean it over and scrape knees head was at, also slightly influenced by how awful it is to peel (really old) knobbies off of a couple of the 70's dirt bikes that have crossed by path doing the vintage DB thing.  So thanks - cam belts will be added to the list.  Confession - used to have BCM rebuild my 2V motor every other winter and THEY would throw on new cam belts so don't give Racer Boy (me) too much credit.

BTW my name is Close...Bob Close.   :)

Ah - well you should add them to the do it now list. They are supposed to be replaced at 12k or 2 years of life. At 11 years... no so good. Good thing is that it's an easy DIY job, especially on a 900. Hardest part is probably geting the covers off - really.

So it's an easy DIY job that needs a rear stand or crank turning tool, a few allens and a spark plug socket and well... new belts. If you don't ahve a crank turner, but do have a rear stand you can do the old trick of putting the trans in a high gear and using the drive line to rotate the engine to the alignment marks.

The rest of the procedure is in tech or tutorials... possibly both. It's in hard - though I do recommend gloves when putting the vertical back on. The proper position for the vertical cam is right on the nose of the cam lobe and the helper springs LOVE to pull it over. And having that pully spin in your hand a couple times can take a bite.

I'm getting a lesson in difficult tires myself. the PO of my KTM fit a 150 rear - on a rim the manual wants one to mount a 130 to. I can get a couple inches over the lip of the rim but no more so far with only two levers. Gotta get another spoon or figure out some other holder. At least I shucked and spooned on the new front w/o any issues.

Thanks for the camb belt "primer", Slide Panda.  I DID get a very nice rear Pit Bull stand with my Duck, so I may have to go with that approach.

Your KTM sounds fun.

pay no attention to us
repeat after me and say "KTMs are boring!"
Once you go down the rabbithole of owning a Duc and a KTM, you'll never have money again  [laugh]

Oh and welcome to our dysfunctional family.  [thumbsup]

Yeah, don't get a KTM. They are useless

- I mean just look at that dumb thing.... looooook at it  [evil]
It's not like it carries me over hill, dale, mountains, some dirt roads and the 'Huh, wonder where that goes..." roads either
