Alright so i'm using my bike for commuting to and from work and i'm looking for more protection. I don't want to be dragging. Clothes around so leathers are out. What i am looking for is shin/knee guards i can slip on underneath my pants. Anyone have any good suggestions?  Everything i fine is motocross specific, its alright if i have to go that way bu i am hoping with the knowledge here to find something more suitable for street use.

At the same time i'm looking for some decent boots. Everything i am trying on that fits i can't zip up past my ankles without risking blowing out the zipper.  Sidi is the only thing i can get on but i don't want full on race gear boots something a little more subtle. Money is not a question just want functional gear that works. If it cost 4 times as much then so be it.

Anyways open to opinions/suggestions. I'm limited to what j can buy in the area(island) and the shops here don't carry a lot of stock that i like.

Thanks

You might want to consider Forcefield limb tubes. I recently bought a pair from revzilla. They slide on just like a sock and are secured in place with velcro straps. They fit nicely under pants. They cover the knee and a fair portion of the shin.
Good luck with your search.

Hmm, this definetly are an interesting concept, are they warm though?  I know when I did my knee in many years back the comfort sock i had to wear under the brace was extremely hot, i ended up tossing it and going with leg nylons(sad I know, but they were thin and stopped the friction if there was any. I just cut the top and bottom off, rolled it up and voila. Anyways bit off topic there.

Any other recommendations out there From Others on shin/knee protection?  I'm not looking to be a sherman tank for when i commute to work, to much stuff to drag as it is.  Last thing i want is to have to transport clothes to work once a week. Then i might as well just start driving my truck again.

Thanks for the help

I use Dainese Knee V. They are good. But again, I wear them under the drake air riding pants.. They end up being a tight fit under regular jeans.

I use forcefield limb tubes.  Now I switched to forcefield underarmour .  I NEVER ride without it.  I get to work, I go to the gym And remove it.  I also use on my dianese jkt a forcefield back armour insert.  Let's just say I am a believer.  I also wear sidi boot for everyday and for spirited ride i switch to sidi vortice.  I need to get a really good gloves next.  Wish I could afford the dianese Valentino Rossi gloves (kind of dig the looks in top of the other stuff)

I am looking at the Icon knee/shinguards but have no experience with them.

Yeah its a broad range of gear out there. Digging through it and trying to figure what is crap or good is proving to be rather difficult. Be nice if i could get my hands on stuff first.

So far i like the look of the forcefields and the alpine star ones. Just unsure at the moment what i want. Wish i could get my hands on them to see the build quality.
Ah well guess I will have to gamble.

I also don't want to drag a change of clothes or boots along to work.  I picked up a pair of RS Taichi Stealth Hard Shell Knee Guards about a month ago and I am very happy with them.  CE approved protection.  Knee/shin sock is light and breathable.   A velcro &  elastic strap goes around the back of your calf and on my leg is long enough to angle it over the bulge of my calf muscle to keep the guard from slipping down.  They stay put very well and hide nicely under my pants on the way to work.   At less than $50 they are great additions to my gear.  Forcefield Limb Tubes are very similar but cost a bit more.

Boots are a bit of a tougher issue if you have fitment problems with standard boots.  I have been using a pair of Bates GX-8 goretex composite safety-toe boots for commuting since I am required to wear safety-toe boots for work.  They are light, waterproof,  and offer a decent amount of protection for a boot I can wear all day, every day.

I have both limb tubes and Dainese knee5 pads. Both are high quality.

The limb tubes are comfortable and don't around slide as much as the knee 5's.The quality is excellent and the padding is thick and a little heavy(not to bad but I also wear their riding shorts together) and the actual pad inside the cloth tube is short in length for my long legs and I usually wear tall boots when I wear them to protect my shins.

The knee5 are hard plastic with soft padding backing them. I mostly wear these because they cover my knee and upper shin so I can wear my shorter street boots with them. They also install quickly, just strap them on over pants (wear them over or under pants) but longer rides, the straps may irritate your calf and slide a little if not strapped tight.

They are both great and for me, serve their own purpose. Remember to wear something than nothing.

As far as boots go...and (danaid) you do say "money is not a question'....but these are the duck's guts for commuting, IMHO:

I have these and can say I love them. A bit bulky but I can fit my pants over them. Otherwise I wear them on the outside. I will also add this, they saved my leg when I lowsided in the canyons. Essentially the bike was on my leg as I slid and I didn't have a scratch  [thumbsup]

Have you looked at the Aerostitch catalog?  I have Klim Dakars outfitted with 'stitch hip and knee/shim pads and seem to work fine.

You guys are full of good recommendations!!  I'm going to have to go to a bigger area and try some of this stuff out/put my hands on it.

you might consider a one-piece commuter suit.  Put on your work clothes, step into suit, zip, ride, dismount, unzip, step out, profit.

Olympia makes a nice one, Fieldsheer used to but I think they discontinued it.  FirstGear, Tourmaster, I'm sure you can look around and find one.  aerostich and motoport are the bee's knees, but pricey.
