Point and Shoot Camera advice

So, DMFers...

I already have a DSLR...with some kick ass lenses, a nice tripod and monopod, filters, flashes, etc etc etc.
The problem is, it and all of its supporting gear are most definitely not bike travel friendly.

What I am looking for are some suggestions on a quality, inexpensive point and shoot that I can carry with me on the bike.
I want fast shutter speeds as that seems to be the biggest fault with most inexpensive P&S cameras.
I would like a high optical zoom.
Preferably SDHC compatible.
Inexpensive and/or very tough as I fully expect it to be dropped off a moving motorcycle at some point.

We currently have a couple and they are very nice for static shots but even tiny movement ruins otherwise great pics.

As I said, this is for bike trips so it doesn't have to be DSLR quality shots but I would like to snap pics on the road of some of the sights I will see and I am not about to risk a $1200 camera body and $300-$2500 worth of glass getting shots with the good camera.

So...suggest away!

i've always been a fan of the canon powershots...

if i didn't already have a s95, i'd buy this:

not the cheapest p&s, but a fast lens and a great sensor.

Survivability while being dropped off a moving motorcycle is a little unrealistic

Seems a lot of people love the S95 and the S100...

LOL, Mom.

I know I am asking for cake and to be allowed to eat it too but it is worth a shot. Chances are, it will be tethered so the worst drop it will experience is from the bars to the tank or side of the tank.

I really like the Nikon P7000:

http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-Coolpix-Digital-Camera-Zoom-Nikkor/dp/B00427ZLRO

It has a aperture, shutter, and manual mode...and an optical viewfinder (if you're into that kind of thing  [laugh])

these were painfully slow shot-to-shot when they were released... i'm assuming they've fixed this?

i really, really wanted one of those when they were released to complement my nikon d7000 but couldn't get past that.

Yeah.

Firmware update.

BTW--I'm not an actual owner, but I have played with one, and like it. A lot.

i waited around for the first two (i think) firmware updates, and those didn't fix it, so i bought a canon g12 and quit paying attention to the nikon p&s forums...

then i decided the g12 was "too big" to carry everywhere and swapped if for it's same-sensor, pocket-sized little brother, the s95.

canon powershot SD960 IS  [thumbsup]
3 years old and still does the job when we don't want to lug around the SLR

He Man

i have a pannisonic TS3. its pretty bullet proof. in terms of hanging it around and crushing it.

handles all my needss and its pretty damn quick from on to off. only downside is battery life. maybe 200 pics before it dies, and if you are doing video. an hour tops.

2006 Ducati S2R1100 Yea.... stunttin like my daddy CHROMED OUT 1100!!!!

im a fuji camera fan.. i have 4, with one just being delivered today...

but for durability, my vote is this one... http://www.amazon.com/Fujifilm-FinePix-Waterproof-Geo-Tagging-Function/dp/B004HO58N4/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1341003614&sr=1-2&keywords=fuji+waterproof
the waterproofing is nice, in case you drop it into a river  ;) , as well as it's protected from humidity.. but in addition to that, i dropped mine out my car window, going 70 on the highway (i was trying to take a pic & dropped it & yes im clumsy!) .. the case cracked slightly & unfortunately is no longer waterproof, but the camera itself, still worked perfectly
says elyse :)

pure. adrenaline. *snort* heh heh weeeeee!
