I highly recommend reading the silencertalk forums.  They have incredible amounts of suppressor construction threads over there.

Yes, I'm reading it.  Let's just say for a minute that I do build a bunch of suppressors.  How many would you be buying?

Not really just for me, as I'm sure you could sell a fair number to other folks as well. I know Roger the Redneck Carpenter would want one.   I would like one in 5.56, and that would reduce the signature by about 32-34db.

Time for an update.

The last six weeks have been pretty tough.  The new machine is still plagued with minor issues that Mazak has taken care of.  I can't really fault them too badly, when something is wrong they're on it quick and their service guy that visits us really knows what he's doing on these machines.

Most of the bugs have been worked out and it just runs and runs to the tune of consuming about 2000 pounds of steel bar in two days.

I hired a full time second shift guy to keep this thing running so once he's up to speed it should be closer to a ton of metal per day going into this thing.  Pretty much every 50 seconds it's on it's dropping a part out [thumbsup]

The move was not kind to my two other cnc machines.  Both have had issues and sucked up more than a little bit of money in diagnostics and parts.

The lathe seemed to be possessed by the debil.  I told my maintenance guy to bring a priest to do an exorcism.  That turned out to have a bad board and I got lucky he had a spare that solved the problem.  $650 for the board plus about that much in diagnostics in total but it resulted in a machine that runs which is what I need so it's the lessor of two evils.  A non functioning machine is a bad bad thing when you have parts due.

The mill is just showing its age I think.  The motor that powers the indexer gave it up despite never being used.  Just old I guess.  I had one job a year ago I used the indexer on.  Soooo. . .  $2500 to repair/replace the motor.  Not in the cards now but I would like to have that indexer working should I need it for something.

The mill also likes to forget where the tool chain is when it warms up.  It has a 30 tool chain that an arm picks tools from and swaps into the spindle for use.  I've found that a big fan aimed at the hydraulic drive motor and leaving the electrical cabinet open will let me run it all day without issue.  Kind of a hokey fix, but hey, whatever it takes, right?

Looking like I picked up a substantial amount of repeat monthly work from a company I've been wanting to work with for a year or so.  It's not a done deal yet because I don't have a PO in my hand, but they've told me they want to use us as a supplier for these aluminum parts.  I also know their machine they used to make them in house died and they don't have the money in the budget to replace it.  I also know their guys hate to run these parts because they make a lot of chips and their machine does not have a chip conveyor.  They have to shovel it out.  A lot.  Good deal for me. :D

The new space has proven to be a good move.  Room to move around and store things is great.

Sometimes I stop and look around it and sort of marvel at how far the shop has come in the last year and a half.  I hate to say we're a "real" shop now, but we're a long way from a guy in his garage.

I'd guess I'm there probably a good 60 hours a week but for the most part it does not feel like work.  It's just what I do.

I dig it :)
