DP, the mind is the second thing to go. Can't seem to remember what the first is.  ;)
A conclusion is the place you got tired of thinking

I had a truly awful day at the forge on Friday while working on this carving set that is promised for delivery for a charity auction August 3.

First, I needed a much longer container than I usually use to quench the blade. No problem, I just picked up one of those aluminum turkey roasting pans and put a couple of quarts of automatic transmission fluid in it. (ATF is a less abrupt quench medium than water, so less likely to cause cracking). The problem? For the first second or so, the steel is still hot enough to melt aluminum, so I watched a two quart puddle of ATF spread red across the shop floor.

Second, I'd just given the kid who's apprenticing to the metal smith who owns the shop the whole rundown on heat treating steel - first you quench from orange-hot to harden the steel, leaving it hard but brittle, then you temper the blade to restore the metal's toughness and springiness while keeping most of the hardness. I was idly looking at a little kink in the blade and wondering if I'd be able to straighten it after tempering and must have put just a little too much pressure with my fingers, and snapped it cleanly in two.

Looks like they're going to be getting a hunting knife for the auction instead.

I miss home.  I've spent 3 of the last 4 weeks on the road partaking in some really charlie foxtrotted up business trips with minimal support from the home office and have logged 4 consecutive weeks of 60+ hours on the job.  I've got motorcycle parts waiting for me at the painter (they've been ready for a week and a half now), and I'm pretty sure my cats have forgotten who I am and gone feral in the house.

After grad school I promised to NEVER return to school again, but here I sit listening tentatively to a delusional PhD regurgitating Carl Clausewitz' outdated bullshit.  Can't ride this weekend because I have books to read and papers to write  >:(  [bang]

On the bright side I passed a tow truck today from a company called "Proactive Towing"  [laugh]

Presumably they tow your car before the breakdown/collision  :-\ [laugh]
