Not Familier with the Duc.

Hello everyone

I just have a few questions as I'm a BMW guy and just don't know really anything about the Duc. I don't mean to flame or make snide remarks. My questions are straight forward no innuendo or other intended. With the disclaimer here we go.

I have been trying to compare the 2012 1100 EVO and the SF 848. They appear very similar.
EVO      MSRP $11,999            848    MSRP $12,999
100hp                                  132hp
Air Cooled                            H2O cooled
2 valve                                4 valve
3.6 Gal                                4.4 Gal
7500 mile Valves                  15,000 mile valves
ABS                                    Not Available that I can tell.
Instrumentation                    Has a couple more bells and whistles

A majority of the rest is the same or very little different between the two. For $1000 more you get 32 more HP and larger fuel capacity. Sounds pretty good.

What is the real world difference between these two? Were they made for two different demographics?

My last question is how expensive is the maintenance on these things?

32 horses is a pretty big jump. almost a 3rd more.
Maintenance really isn't that different from any other bike, IMO
Never wrestle with pigs. You both get dirty, and the pigs like it...

1100evo  vs   848evo 

kinda like:

R1200R    vs   S1000RR


(KINDA...obviously the S1000 is more like the 1199...but still, your talking an air cooled naked street bike vs a full on liquid cooled full fairing street bike)


Better comparisons might be the Street fighter 848 vs the 848 evo,  or the 1100evo vs the street fighter 848.

in the first comparison you have the same power plant in naked vs faired bikes.
second comparison gives you an air cooled 2v motor vs a liquid cooled 4v motor in a similar (similar)  chassis.


As another frame of comparison in terms of power in the real world, consider weight as well.  My tenant has an R1150R Rockster, I have a Monster 796.  I take him off the line and in most roll on tests, and have more lean angle simply because of the narrow profile.  His bike is significantly heavier than mine, and he is a bigger guy.  If we were to switch bikes, wed probably be even or I a little faster on the bimmer.

Welcome - those guys hit most of it. One other item of note will be the red line. On the water cooled bike you'll get a couple K more RPMs before the limiter kicks in.

The street fighter will be heavier as well.

But really. numbers on a page will never tell you the whole story - If you can, it's demo ride time!

Something else to consider when comparing the M1100 to the SF848 is the ergonomics. The tank of the SF is really tall at the back end, so it punches you in the gut if you are not pushed all the way to the back. This might not be an issue for taller people, but that is one thing keeping me from getting one (for the record, I am 5'5". I believe the SF has a more aggressive riding position. So longer rides can be less comfortable.

I actually had a different opinion when I rode the SF848.  While it does have a taller tank, I found the riding position almost more upright than the monster, I felt like I was sitting in a kitchen chair.  I didnt care for it at all, Im 5'6" and the inseam was the only problem i had with proportions...but I dont think bent bars would last more than a week on the SF if I ever bought one.  That being said, I REALLY love that power plant.  Smooth, fast, and oh the sound.

the 4v motor requires less maintenance intervals, but more expensive maintenance.

the ergos of the SF are more towards sporting than the Monster
the Monster has a larger (slightly) seat
the Monster seat is softer and more comfortable (haven't ridden a SF but sat on one)
