Right now, they are in an iterative design mode. At some point there will be another great leap forward like the 2x pixel density screens, but until then it's like any other tech product. Each version is a bit better, but lacks a *gasp* factor.

Since I'm still rocking a 3rd generation one that's taken to crapping out at 20% battery, I'll be getting the S4Rs since I passed on the S4R.. er wait. The 5 since I passed on the 4s. It'll be nice to have the faster processor as mine has a bit of a fit if I'm listening to Audible and pop open something like eBay

Everyone expects to be WOW'd with a new version but the phone is already a great platform so there's just not that much to improve on so hard to do something to get the WOW effect w/ an updated version

thats as good a reason as any to upgrade, to whatever model. I wonder how many will upgrade from 4/4s to 5?

I may drop by the "magical" store to see what they are all taking and get a prescription ASAP.  Maybe I'll be in a better mood too.

The iFans will jump on this one, since Apple has been getting beat up about certain things, like screen size, in the past few years. Android fans will say that they didn't do enough. I'm still debating what I will be buying for myself this Xmas. But at least I'll have a chance to get rid of this annoying BlackBerry!!

All I know is there is going to be a lot of good i3 and i4 flooding the market with people upgrading. For someone like me thAt doesn't care about a phone... I might get one a nice used one.

Can get a new iphone 4, with a contact, for free once the new phone hits the market.

And I think he raises an excellent point: the 5 is an incremental improvement (and generally, a pretty good one), but Apple has taught us to look for revolutionary leaps forward with each of these hyper-hyped announcements - and every single one of the incremental improvements on this phone got leaked to the tech press months ago. No surprise that today is such a letdown.

Also not a surprise: Apple designs their own proprietary connector when a replace-it-at-any-truck-stop-or-mini-mart-from-Kansas-to-Karachi mini-USB connector would have worked just as well. No, better.

Well I just pre-ordered mine.  I have the 4s right now, and I'm not due for an upgrade so it's costing me around $600 with taxes and all that.  I'm planning to sell my current phone to Gazelle when I get the 5 next week.  Every time a new phone comes out I'm stuck in the dead middle of my upgrade cycle, that's always been annoying for me because by the time I could upgrade it was already old news and the next generation rumors were buzzing.

I agree it's not a huge advancement from the 4s, I don't really care about a slightly bigger screen, more apps on a single page, but the little features like Panorama and the turn by turn directions in Maps will be useful for me.  Thinner and lighter isn't so bad either.

usb is 4 pins.

the outgoing dock connector is 30 pins and the new one is 8.

they're doing more than just charging and data transfer via the dock connector.

No mention of battery durability on 4g is unacceptable to me.  Give me a battery that lasts!

Frankly, switching the connector is by far the most douchebag move they have contemplated since the suing of Samsumg. This time they make the beast with two backsed their own customers. Everyone that I know that owns any iPhone also has some device that docks it. All these people will need to shell out the $30 for the connector. Why not just include it in the box? Charging additional for it is BS and it really does show what Apple thinks of their customers. But at the same time, no offense to NoisyDante, I know way too many people that current own a 4s that will need to pay out of pocket a shitload of money to upgrade.

I currently own a 3gs that acts more like an iPod touch and a BB. The 5 is still one of the best smartphones in the market. It's still a race between the Galaxy S3 and the iPhone, even though I will be super pissed when I have to shell out the $30.
