i've been meaning to upgrade/update all my home theater stuff since i moved to california 11 years ago... i guess now that i've moved back to texas i should probably get on that.

honestly, one of my justifications was avoiding blu-ray altogether... i had a pretty "cutting edge" setup in early 2000 when cables went from component>hdmi and optical media players went from progressive-scan/anamorphic widescreen > hd-dvd/blu-ray. i had a really nice progressive scan dvd player and i'd just replaced most of my non-anamorphic dvds with new transfers. i wasn't about to go through the whole process again to get "whatever the next format winner was going to be".

streaming/downloads and a media server is where it's at for me.

What do you have for a media server derby?  I'm interested in setting something up, maybe a Mac Mini and then screen sharing with my MBP on the couch to control it.

Looks like I won't be upgrading my iPhone4 eventhough I am now without contact from AT&T.  I can't justify it.
The prepaid virgin mobile or boost plan is kind of appealing budget wise.

Just finished reading all the intel on the 5, that is one bad ass phone. I'll sell my 4 and 4s to offset the full cost of the new phone.

ubuntu linux virtual machine* running sabnzbd, sickbeard, and headphones with xbmc viewers.

*it doesn't need to be a virtual machine, but i already had a vmware esxi5 testlab server at home with a ton of nas storage and didn't want to build dedicated hardware for the data side of things.

i'm currently running xbmc on a few computers i had laying around, but i'll eventually build some that are a little more elegant.

Sounds like a nice setup you've got there, I'm still running Maverick Meerkat on my desktop but it doesn't have nearly the space left to be used as a media server.  I'm thinking simple, get a (hopefully) cheap Mini to connect to the TV, screen share with the MBP and connect to nas with my pogoplug.

That's what I do. I have a 3GS I got for free and use a pay as you go plan from t-mobile. I spend less than 25 a month (I rarely make phone calls, mostly text) and for 6 months  out of the year I'm out of the USA and just get a local sim card to my location in the same phone. Cannot justify a data plan when the device has wifi.

the new phone is apparently pretty fast:



...assuming, of course, the iphone5 benchmarks are legitimate.
